  1. 2-3 million for a small family home in the inner west (Drummoyne) where I used to live. Inner west is certainly not a horror commute to the CBD but its still not practical to go to the beach at the weekend unless you are prepared to sit in traffic for over an hour Further out and its stinking hot and, in my opinion, not worth bothering with. The lifestyle would be so poor factoring in the oppressive temperatures and long distances. The reality is there are lots of people who have either been there so long that they didn;t pay that for it when they brought or they, well, are super rich!
  2. I never went through the skilled migrant process so other members or agents could advise the latest. I opted instead for the partner visa route because it was an option and whilst it was more expensive it was not subject to annual quotas and the like. Finally got my citizenship last month, I first lived and worked in Australia in 2008 so it been a long road! It need not take that long for you and at 36 there is some time left but I did 3 years on a 457 and ended up having to leave and went completely back to square one, hence my advice to go skilled migrant pr route straight away. Where are you thinking of moving to?
  3. There's a few agents on this forum that can advise on the skilled migrant path which I would think is more sensible unless you are young but I'm guessing if you have 13 years experience you are mid to late 30's? 457 is dead 482 is the new number I think, but not a good path for older people (like I was when I moved) The 'rona is going to be the biggest hurdle at the moment
  4. It's 1.90 now but its was 2.09 in March 2020..... You can never be sure. In 2018 we moved everything we had at 1.80 to buy a house. A today's exchange rate we could have got $25,000 more (at 2020 rates $75k more) we look like idiots. For a year it really bothered me. Except that the house we brought with it has gone up 35% in 3 years and even with that larger deposit we couldn't buy it at all now because the loan would have been too big. Moral of the story is move money when you need it rather than trying to guess the market.
  5. Yeah but again when you are PAYG like me, work 2 minutes drive from work, don't wear a uniform with an emblem on it, need glasses for lots of things not just work what can you claim??? Working from home allowances are easy to follow and business related mileage is also easy to follow The salary sacrifice rules might be a little worthy of some advice for some people I suppose. Where Accountants are great is for, say, a tradie. Shall I be sole trader or PTY should I buy or lease a vehicle, how to claim the most deductions etc etc
  6. Nope do ours ourselves, when you work PAYG jobs with only a couple of small investments to be honest its not worth paying to have it done. Accountants (in my experience) always say they can recover their fee by identifying deductions you've missed then say you can only claim $55 for laundering your uniform so long as it has a logo in it! You then get presented with a $200 bill (but you can claim $45 back in tax ;)) I've nothing against accountants, when I had my own business I wouldn't have dreamed of doing it without one but for PAYG jobs its simple stuff
  7. Yes its a frustrating thing but i think the ATO do it intentionally so that everyone goes out and buys TVs in July/August and stimulates the retail sector
  8. ha ha yes we have a IT bot which searches for key terms like "reno" or "do nothing" and automatically emails HR who in turn automatically send out disciplinary letters to all staff. Companies might monitor time spend browsing or streaming or blocked content but to have some system which 'reads' what people are saying and fact checks whether they are talking bull is quite ambitious Perhaps you can develop and improve such a system during your inevitable 5 hour daily commute....
  9. I don't believe for a second that once the pandemic is 5 years in the past companies will allow staff to work from home 80% of the time. During lockdown at my work we all turned to the 'get round to it job list' and spent working time painting walls and building a new deck. One person reno'd their whole house! Moving areas and houses are long term decisions and if you moved 2-3 hours away from work in the long term its goodbye beach hello GBP9000 season ticket and binging on netflix.
  10. I also got my sons extremely quickly, I think his citizenship certificate arrived less than 2 months after he was born from Australia House. Was back in 2016 though Surely the biggest hurdle will be actually getting permission to enter Australia yourself? There are quotas on citizens coming home, at work we are struggling to get green passport holders home and they have priority over regular citizens
  11. Bournemouth is very pricey because it has one of the souths only sandy beaches and is "commutable" to London. Although why anyone would want to spend 5 hours a day on trains I have no idea.... Traffic was horrendous on a sunny day don't miss that....
  12. partner visa, if you meet the genuine ongoing relationship criteria then it wont be refused and there is no annual cap. Work visas have a cap so you can be refused or processing delayed. I had the exact same choice and went for partner visa, yes more expensive but didn;t regret it - and now AU citizen
  13. In my experience you need a permanent ongoing job that you have had for 3 months and not be in a probation period. Based on my experience 2 1/2 years ago.
  14. I couldn't see who did the police check (immi or applicant) because the online forms are not available until after you have met the residency requirement. So I ordered mine in advance so i could apply as early as possible. As I had it I uploaded it anyway At the interview/test I was told that They will now do the police check I got my approval 3 days later in the post (dated the same day as my interview test) I suspect its worth pre-loading the police check to speed things up, not guaranteed to improve things but why not do it anyway?
  15. Its probably a reasonable conclusion as stamp duty is into $10's of thousand. But I cannot overstress how silly the market in all of tassie is at the moment. We have owned our house for 2 1/2 years and in that time it has risen by approximately 35% based on the recent sale of a neighbour's house and the real estate who represented the previous owner revaluing our house. We literally would not be able to buy our house today and we have only owned it for such a short time
  16. I'm sure you are aware that buying a house at the moment in Hobart is very tricky, not impossible but very stressful. There isn't much for sale and what there is is hugely inflated. I can't see how you will avoid renting for a year or so to build up a credit rating and find a house you want to buy and the vendor agrees to sell to you and not to the other 10 offers they have received. We moved over in October 2017 and weren't in a position to buy until mid 2018 in terms of mortgage we had 40% LTV. We found our house in November 2018 and moved in Feb 2019. In the meantime we had to rent (reluctantly).
  17. Application lodged 2nd March 2021 Invited for test date 19th March 2021 Test Date 5th May 2021 Approval Date 5th May 2021 Ceremony Date 23rd July 2021
  18. Hobart, citizenship ceremony in Kingborough council area. Appreciate it must be longer in the major cities but 4 months versus 27 months is hugely varied
  19. I applied 3rd March 2021 and have my citizenship ceremony next week. Whilst its great that the time is faster than expected why do they publish 27 months processing time online/
  20. Geez you must be a laugh down the pub only good news stories to tell
  21. Oh god really how realistic is that! I don't think that's what they were asking. Employment status between pr and citizenship isnt relevant the op will be fine You can lose citizenship let alone pr for serious criminal actions unless you've already surrendered your other citizenships
  22. You could get divorced then apply for a prospective marriage visa
  23. When we were moving money out we got 1.8 to the pound. I thought it was bad during the build up the moving until i saw the one, two, five and 10 year average was 1.7 I cant imagine making money buying sterling at the moment its got a long way still to fall......
  24. There is also no law against choosing a partner based on their nationality in the same way you might for other superficial reasons such as looks. Maybe you are an intelligent well educated chinese women who hates communism and is attracted to somebody who lives in Australia more than anything else, so you are happy with trent from punchy and trent is happy with you How's that any different to picking a person because they look nice but have no intelligence over somebody who is capable of intelligent conversation but looks like the back end of a bus. as previous people have said too they are about to allow Irish and other nationalities a 3 year WHV. They should not be surprised if that is enough time to meet a partner and become defacto
  25. but those same medical or character tests would also prohibit getting a skilled visa.... or any visa
