  1. yep just revisited the website and it does may may be required to provide evidence if over 75 my mistake still my grandparents are way too old to travel really
  2. A point to note as i found out recently when looking into my grandparents coming out for my wedding is that over 75's need a full medical to be awarded even a holiday visa for australia
  3. Well I'm not sure about that, he was a few months from his 33rd birthday. You have to apply before you turn 31, then you might be able to wait 6 months before entering Oz meaning you are 31 1/2 and then spend one year here so 32 1/2 to my knowledge you can't apply 1 day before your 31st birthday and wait a year before coming over
  4. Certainly wouldn't report him it's none of my business TBH, but i've had the chance to do consulting work (report writing) remotely before from UK companies i used to work for and always turned it down because i'm here on a 457 and only one employer can employ me (so i thought) Also of course uk pounds have been worth considerably less than they used to for the past few years and uk payrates are unattractive if you are in Oz! He may not have been on a 600, not sure when it came in but he was 32 so couldn;t have been a WHV
  5. Yes, i was reading that but if the company is european, you are paid in euros, and transfer the euros out here to pay for living costs i think short term you are not breaking either of thse conditions I dont agree with it being allowed but when the guy said what he was doing alarm bells rang 'illegal' and 'tax evasion' but there really is nothing there that says 'internet working' so to speak is in breach of the visa?
  6. A while back we advertised at work for an engineer and we got an application for a guy who said he was currently in Brisbane on a holiday visa working for his company back in Italy. At the time everyone in the office concluded that what he was doing was completely illegal But now I'm reading the website and a 600 group tourist visa can be issued for a year and allows somebody to conduct business activities so long as it isn't for an australian company and you aren't paid locally. I'm amazed you can do this - has anyone experienced this before?
  7. would you seriously move without a sponsor uprooting your children and expect a school to enrol them when you have a 3 month holiday visa :err: I doubt you would get a longer holiday visa for a child given the legal requirement in both the UK and OZ for children to attedn school
  8. yep i would have thought 60-65k is average!
  9. surely $53k or even $43K isn't half the average wage in oz?
  10. Me and my employer had issues with this for my 457. 1% in the past year or 2% donation to a training body. In the end after weeks of debate my boss convinced them to allow the company to retrospectively send people on courses which cover the 1% rather than the 2% to a university or TAFE maybe worth a try? no certainty of course
  11. I think oz is failing to meet its un obligation to look after refugees but that aside it's a master stroke in my opinion to try to solve the problem PNG is a poor country and 'a little corrupt' in my view but its not a war zone and genuine refugees will escape risk to their lives. Conversely people sat in Tehran thinking to themselves how annoying it is that they have no freedom and fancy a new life in oz won't make the trip anymore The fact is that people drowning on a daily basis is tragic and has to be stopped In terms of economic migrants we all get dealt a hand as to where we are born unfortunately and free passage to wherever you feel like living is never going to be possible otherwise everyone would move to Europe, North America or Australia!
  12. No probs criscross I can't see the marine industry changing too much bae and rolls Royce are big players here too but a deal with the us navy means that non Australians are excluded from working in the sector even if u are british for example earlier this year I was unable to work on the Charles choules and its a former RFA ship! my advice is to keep it broad in terms of disciplines rather than niche. Yes more competition for jobs but more available options too cruise industry is on the up and there will be work on the refit side in years to come. Carnival are looking to do more work locally for example ....
  13. according to wikipedia - the grass isnt always greener on the other side
  14. I'm sorry to hear that, i'm in engineering too and have struggled to find a new job (lucky to have the one i do i suppose) It's sad to think that its easier to find work in Africa than Australia!!!
  15. mine took 7 months as well, but business was not approved sponsor and we had problems with the 1% training requirement
  16. thanks for that, i will probably do the same then!
  17. Last year i did my uk tax return from Australia for my income from letting my house in the uk HMRC sent all forms to the same address which we are still at including the summary at the end This year no tax return form has arrived, whilst I dont like paying tax I think ignoring this might not be a good idea Has anyone else not received their form yet?
  18. Hi Chris I have worked for the past 2 years in the marine design industry in Australia (Sydney) and have found it to be extremely hard to find work when compared to Southampton where I lived prior to that. Over the past 18 months (dont like my job much!) ive checked seek each week and the only jobs that have even come up to apply for defence projects which required citizenship and 5 years history for security, i've checked interstate as well I think the effective 'winding down' of both Austal and Incat here has had a massive impact. Outside of defence there is very little work in the marine industry so if you arent a citizen its a big risk can't help with the fitter side of things hopefuly someone can? sorry i dont have better news but we have a mechanical designer/drafter working with us at the moment on a 3 month contract and he's of the same opinion should have added pm me if you would like some more info on marine industry
  19. thanks for that, i was thinking that was the best strategy! didn't want to have to leave my fiancee at the alter because I didn;t have a visa :biglaugh:
  20. Hi, I was wondering if anyone could advise me on what they would do with regards to visas if they were in my situation: I am currently in oz on a 457 visa which has 2 years to run, i'm getting married in December in oz and we then wish to travel around the country for a few months on honeymoon. Once i leave my job i'm potentially going to be served my '28 days notice' and asked to leave but i'll want to stay on on a holiday only basis. I'm reluctant to say to DIAC i'm looking for a new job because, well i'm not! I can apply for a holiday visa but i guess they might think i'm trying to buy time and reject it? or i should i ask for a delay in cancelling the 457 to cover the honeymoon? We are leaving the country after our honeymoon thanks in advance was hoping someone might have heard of a similar situation before?
