  1. I would suggest you join the Dyslexia Australia FB group. Very helpful.
  2. You will find suitable accommodation in Wynnum Manly for your price bracket. Good primary state schools in the area.
  3. Hello Bryan, yes I would be happy to share details of the organisation, note that it is Brisbane specific. Within the financial and insurance services sector there are a lot of opportunities if you hold the right work experience. Please feel free to PM me and I can provide details. Regards.
  4. Hello all, the are Australian employers who are open to hiring mature workers. The organisation (Life Insurance) I work for in Brisbane has a diversity policy and proactively employs older workers. Roles include Admin, Claims Managers, IT, change management, finance, payroll and customer service. Worth exploring employers advertising a diversity policy. Good luck.
  5. Hello Yang it would be helpful if you outlined your nephews experience and which state he intends to move to. As a previous post mentioned, target rural areas.
  6. Hello Deanne It probably depends on your OT skill base. You could be supervised within context of an injury management company. You could work as a rehab case manager for Employment Service or A Not for Profit...or for an insurance company. There are options. If you would like to PM me feel free.
  7. Hi PaddyMacs. I understand where you are at and feeling 'cold feet'. No one can make the decision for you as only you know your family circumstances. The first 12 months abroad is hard work in my opinion on many fronts. One option is to not sell everything; rent your house, stick things in storage, organise a sabbatical from work, travel light and just plan to work and live abroad for a defined period such as 12 months or 24 months. Treat it like families who sail around the world for a year or two and live abroad, a grown up working holiday. An enrichment experience. If you love it down the track rethink your plans. If your parents are up for it, they could come and join in as well for a period.

  10. Hi, we live in Wynnum North with kids, it is very family oriented. W ynnum is very quiet of an evening. Manly has slightly more action. Joining in some of the local sporting activities would be your best bet. There is a free community fitness programme on Wynnum Esplanade during the week contact Kris Fleming 0458002959. There is an adult swim club at Manly Pool (early morning) and a Triathlon club. There is a 'walkers groups on the Esplanade' check this out via Wynnum Facebook page or Meetup website; Park Run happens every Sat morning 7am at the end of Wynnum Wading pool (register online), Wednesday afternoon Go Sailing (WAGS) is free sailing at Manly Yacht Club - you would be crew and novice or skilled is welcome. The Bayside PCYC has facilities and classes for adults as well as kids. This includes squash courts, gym, martial arts classes. There is adult touch rugby and league (Bayside Bugs), softball, netball etc etc If you look at the local Wynnum Quest newspaper you will see there are free trial kayaking and sailing events held for kids and adults. Thorneside has a canoe club on Tingalpa creek / river. Sleeman Sports Complex Chandler - adult badminton Wed nights. Wynnum library has evening events (poetry/ writers / bookclub). You can check out this an other local events on the Brisbane City Council website. We know younger folk who go to the Wynnum Manly Leagues club, it does cater well for all ages and decent drink prices. The Manly Hotel probably the widest range of music on and dance area and I see quite a few 20/30 somethings involved. The Wynnum Manly Trailer Boat Club has some music and charity events. The other option is to join in some of the charity and volunteer organisations this could include Coastguard, Red Cross etc Food for thought?
  11. HI Dean Judd, my OH's came through just under 8 months we applied 28th August 2012 so that should give you a feel. Once you are 1-2 weeks away from the 8 months wait, I would email your CO and request an update on the application status. Probably worth looking a overseas flights for at 8 /9 months mark to see what you can realistically do as the CO will ask for flight details once your application is at the finalisation stage. So good to have a rough plan. Not long to go now.
  12. Partner Visa - applied 28th August 2012 - approved 14th April 2013. Good news! Case Officer KP. Now just have to organise for OH to leave Australia for 3 business days to activate the visa. Probably go to New Zealand. Good luck other August applicants
  13. Hi, my husband applied 28th August 2012. No word from KP our CO yet however he did say in previous verbal communication that the finalisation date "would typically be 8 months so for example 28th April". It seems to be 8 months on the button at the moment. Big however, he knows we are not in a rush as husband has a 457 so already in the country. Not sure if that makes a difference. So not long to wait i suppose. Good luck
  14. Hi Andy, my OH has gone the 457 route as an interim measure so he can start working before the souse visa is granted. You can recycle your medical, police check and data from your spouse visa so this makes it quick.
  15. partner visa submitted 28th Aug 2012, chatted with our CO today KP and looks like it will be 8 months before issue ie 28th April. Its not going to be any earlier. So that's 8 months. Least we have a more definite time frame now.
  16. I agree with GeorgeD send off the application ASAP and if they need it they can ask for it. At least you will be 'in the queue'. It would not hurt to apply for it anyway at a later date.
  17. Hi Snifter, I used my passport (notarised copies) to apply. I did also sent a copy of a certified copy of my birth certificate from 1972 (not original BC). For some reason an original birth cert was not issued at that time in Perth. A notarised copy of my certified copy birth cert was used in the application and this seemed fine. I would ring the visa applications office and check. Please note to apply for Oz passports for my children outside of Oz, I needed an original birth certificate. So I had to send off for one anyway. They birth deaths and marriages offices post one to you very quickly, its worth getting. Hopefully someone else can clarify if the BC is necessary.
  18. My OH submitted application August 2012. I had thought based on recent POI threads that July/August applications were starting to be processed...however our CO KP today wrote back to say the visa is likely to be processed in April. The reason given for this is apparently due to the high volume of applications and therefore longer processing times expected to get through them all. So I am hoping (Plan B) OH 457 sponsorship comes through from his employer comes through before we fly on the 7th Feb. Otherwise we would have to go out on a tourist visa...we only have one way tickets. I wonder if one way tickets would be an issue on a 3 month tourist visa?
  19. Hi JMP2006, Congratulations! When did you apply? July or August? Just wondering as applied for OH in August and we booked to fly 7th February. CO is KP. Hoping they might do '6 month' rather than '9 month' processing time.... thanks and all the best in Oz
  20. Hi Ems4321, my husband has been offered a job too, due to the visa delay he is going on a 457 visa in the meantime. If I had known this at the start of this process we could have done the 457 months ago and be moving now! As it is, we go in February. The 457 visa process seems fairly quick and the medicals and character checks for the spouse visa are used so you don't have to redo them.
  21. Helpful advice, thank you. I will proceed with getting my husband an alternate visa (457) in the meantime. The other posts were useful, glad to know others are faced with the same situation.
  22. Completed spouse visa application 28th August. I was under the impression that it would take 5 months to process and then was told 8-9 months which means May or June 2013! We had planned to move at Christmas however have now booked flights for the start of Feb 2013. My husband will enter on a tourist visa. Due to the time lag his prospective employer is going to push through a 457 visa sponsorship so he can start working straight away. Can anyone tell me why there needs to be an 8-9 month wait? The 457 visas are processed in 1-3 months. The CO has already told us everything required has been submitted. Paid a hefty fee...why the delay? Surely €1500 covers and administrators time? I note they intend to significantly increase the visa processing fees for 2013.
