  1. Well I'm hoping some of the doom and gloom in WA lifts by May - I've got to find a new job then as I'm being made redundant. Scary times for those looking for work in any state I think.
  2. Some more good news! My parents look like they got their case officer yesterday! Typically the ONE day they didn't check their emails, only knew to thanks to Go Matilda sending mum a text message this evening. So medicals, form 80 and passport pages to send over. They're currently between Adelaide and Melbourne so are going to hop foot it to Melbourne to hopefully get their medicals done early next week. Their tourist visa expires next Sunday so are hoping against hope they will be able to fly out and stay out until the visa is granted now. What are peoples experiences of timing from the case officer getting all the information back to visa grant?
  3. Wow! Cinema here I find is very expensive, $18 per adult at the Event cinemas I think. Cheaper on a Tuesday, but then what if I want to go on another day?!
  4. I can't give them away! We've a tree and our garden is constantly littered with them. No way can I use them all myself. Have put them in a box so the neighbours can help themselves but still a large amount go in the bin!
  5. Gosh I really don't have any useful advice, but what an awful year you've head. My heart really goes out to you. Is there any way of applying for a PR visa to come back to Australia? Have you looked at your options with a migration agent?
  6. Hmm, not sure to be honest. You could try speaking to immigration and see if they'll put something in writing. But if it was me my employer can say what they like, doesn't change the fact that my visa obligations end after 2 years with the employer whether I've been on maternity leave or not. There's nothing they can do about it.
  7. Yep, still counts as you're still employed by them even on maternity leave.
  8. Not sure that link works, but if you google 'extending working rights 417' then the top word document is the one you need.
  9. Sorry, just wanted to clarify, so your employer submitted your visa application to immigration in December 2013 and you are waiting for it to be granted? If so then you can apply to extend your working rights with your employer, it's just a fill in form type of thing, send it off and you'll be fine. The top document is the one you need. https://www.immi.gov.au/.../working.../417/request-whm-extension.doc‎
  10. Second this - this is how I work out whether a job is worth applying for. What is your husbands job title and experience? Maybe then we could give you a better idea. I know I for one earn less in Australia than I would do in England, so its not always double or more for everyone!
  11. So many to list! Meeeemo instead of memo, d-er-by instead of d-ar-by, and my personal favourite Mal-dives instead of 'Moldeeves' - well I guess with that one they are pronouncing it how it's spelt, but it's still not right!
  12. You should definitely look into whether the bridging visa is the same for the defacto, because I'm sure I've heard of quite a few friends coming over on tourist visas and then going on the bridging visa for a defacto and being able to work - this would be before the evisitor expires as well. Here you go http://www.immi.gov.au/Visas/Pages/801-820.aspx definitely says you should apply whilst in Australia and you can work whilst you are awaiting the outcome.
  13. Hmm ok. So would it make sense to apply for a defacto visa in 5-6 weeks time rather than go the RSMS route? I'm not sure of the timescales but is the defacto quicker to grant with less hurdles to jump through? And then you wouldn't be tied to the employer for 2 years (that can be the hardest part of the visa believe me!) Would you still not have work rights on a defacto bridging visa?
  14. I think you are confusing the Employer sponsored regional 187 Visa with the Skilled Regional Sponsored 489 visa. The 489 is the one with the postcodes you have to live in. The 187 applies to the whole of Perth.
  15. Maybe he's confusing your visa with a temporary 457 or something.... because there is no requirement to do anything once your 2 years are up with an RSMS. You'll be a free agent with a permanent visa.
  16. Hmm you do seem to be in a bit of a predicament! I went from WHV to RSMS but I didn't leave the country so went onto a bridging visa with work rights whilst awaiting the RSMS. It is worth it for PR in the long run, but I have heard the waiting times for RSMS are a lot longer than when I applied (I got mine granted in 2 weeks). Are you going through an agent? They might be able to advise you the best course of action. Either that or you and your boyfriend leave and spend some time elsewhere (such as NZ on WHV) so once you have 12 months relationship evidence you could lodge a defacto?
  17. I don't know about the legality of such a thing, but I was made to sign a new contract when my company sponsored me for PR. I had to repay the whole visa and agents cost if I left the Company within 18 months of the visa being granted. So mine wasn't even pro-rata for time! Thankfully passed the 18 months now, so that's a weight off!
  18. Everywhere has good and bad, Perth isn't utopia by any stretch of the imagination! Only you know why you are moving in the first place, so only you will know if you are making a mistake. But don't think that Perth doesn't have it's share of first world problems - it does. Yes there are bush fires occasionally, most (I think) start accidentally, but others are bored pyrotechnics (adults or children) who get their kicks out of seeing things burn. Racism.... hmm well, yeah maybe. Aussies I know certainly don't like the aboriginals, but that's a debate I don't really get into. To be fair the aboriginals don't really like the aussies all that much either! I think most 'suburbs' will be pretty quiet after 6pm. Try wandering around any suburb street in the UK at 6pm and I doubt you'll find much going on. It has gotten better over the past few years, head into the CBD, or Freo and you'll find plenty going on until late into the evening. But to be honest once you've got home from work, had some dinner and a glass of wine, I don't think you'll need a happening suburb. I like it because, it's warm, the sky is blue, the beaches white, the ocean turquoise and I have more disposable income than I did in the UK.
  19. That would be the ideal solution! However I think it's quite unlikely at the moment.... I don't think he'd do anything to go out of his way to damage the process but if contacted specifically for something... he might. Safe to say that I will be the sponsor/assurer if we get to the point of the 143!
  20. Alan, this might be more of a question for you... If there is a breakdown in the relationship between the sponsor and the parents before the visa is granted - I assume the sponsor could withdraw their sponsorship of said parents and visa would be denied? Is there any reason the sponsor would be contacted prior to visa grant for the 173?
  21. As long as you go back to work to fulfil your 2 year obligation after having a baby I can't see an issue - as even if you are on maternity leave you are still technically employed as they have to keep your job for you for 12 months. From the timeline you've suggested I can't see a problem, visa grant in August 2014, pregnant in January 2015 (you hope!) which means by the time you go on Maternity leave you will have done over 12 months of your obligation already. As for maternity pay, the government pays this not your employer, you have to have been working (for anyone) for 10 months of the past 12.
  22. Have a look on the ATO website about tax residency status - if you are moving around the country and working casually then you aren't a resident for tax purposes, but if you live in the same place, involve yourself in the community then you can be classed as a resident. But best to read on there. http://www.ato.gov.au/Calculators-and-tools/Are-you-a-resident/ I don't think $20 p/h is a bad wage for a temp kitchen job.
  23. If you've been here 10 years just get an RRV and apply for citizenship when you get back?
  24. Currently 'living' in a caravan touring Australia, they don't have a residence in England any more. Thanks for that, I'll forward the link to them.
