  1. Buy one travel adapter and use it with a uk trailing socket power board with 6 - 8 sockets, temporarily keep using all your UK plugs. :-)
  2. There is no skills assessment for 457. You only need to provide evidence of the required skill. A 457 is a temporary visa. I wouldn't do anything like selling your house prior to grant of the visa. Even then, there is a lot of risk. What if the sponsoring company don't get their approval to sponsor? You'd really be up the creek!
  3. Clean it. Wheels off, seat off, pedals off, handlebars off, anything protruding get that off too. Cable-tie everything to the frame tightly. Bubble-wrap it. Make a box out of any old cardboard you can get your hands on. It's not difficult and it should look ok when you are finished. Tape all the joints and corners with heavy duty packing tape, the brown stuff. :-) Weigh it, measure it. Get postage quotes from as many shippers as you can for comparison.
  4. From your previous statement, I was assuming that you were contemplating sending your boys going to Uni in Scotland. If they live with you in Australia, then they may be classified as international students back in Scotland. Assuming you are originally from Scotland. We were in the same boat. Kids were international here, and also international if they returned home to Scotland. PR made things a bit cheaper here in Melbourne. 7k a year as opposed to 15k a semester!
  5. You need to check this carefully. They may be classed as international students in Scotland if they have been living away from Scotland.
  6. So the rates as of June 2014 are your current rates. You can't make assumptions or expectations about future earnings just because there is a re-negotiation process ongoing. Otherwise, I'm off to test drive a few Bentleys because I might be earning a few hundred thousand more next year! :-) Get professional help quickly.
  7. Seems very odd that you don't have clearly defined rates of pay in a contract you signed a year and a half ago. Are you already working and earning in Australia? It sounds like it from your explanation. What visa do you currently have? A 457 visa is for skilled persons who are nominated to fill a required position in Australia. The employer obviously wants you in Australia otherwise they wouldn't bother with the hassle of the whole process. Yet they don't want to pay the employee the going rate for the job in accordance with the visa requirements? And they are an industry leader. This isn't making sense unless I am missing something..
  8. Lots of the prepaid options have been screwing down on the data over the past year or so. Kids all moved on to Woollies when they offered 5gb on the cheap top ups, the Aldi, Virgin, then Lebara etc etc. there's still options out there, you just have to explore what works for you.
  9. I'm in Melbourne, but my agent was in Perth. All plain sailing! http://www.isagroupinternational.com/contact-us/
  10. Yes my employer paid all of my visa fees.
  11. Loads of resellers of the big 2 networks. (Telstra and Optus). My wife uses a Lebara sim currently, and the kids are using Woolies sims. Lebara and Woolies are resellers of the Optus network and it is fine. I am with Virgin, also an Optus reseller. I travel widely locally and interstate and I've never had any coverage problems. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are usually a bit more expensive and offer less data than the other resellers (http://www.mobilenetworkguide.com.au/virtual_operators_information.html) of these very same networks. There are pros and cons to all of the operators. It's easy enough to chop and change until you eventually are comfortable with a service and price.
  12. So they have submitted the nomination which you have paid for, but the employer now isn't happy about the timescales involved? Didn't they know this before? Seems odd. I had both a 457 (2nd time around) application in at the same time as my 186. 457 renewal was granted in around 2 weeks, then 2 weeks later 186 was approved. (186 was submitted several months prior)
  13. Worry not. Remember when you were a kid at school? Everyone likes to talk to the new kid! :-) It doesn't happen overnight, but you will gradually build a new circle of acquaintances and some will become good friends.
  14. All depends on your circumstances; only you know the answers. If you've got a million $ In the bank, buy new. If you've got 10k in the bank, buy a cheaper runabout. There are plenty of used cars to choose from. They tend not to rust here, unlike the uk, so prices may seem high. Check dealer prices online to get a feel for the prices. You don't need to re sit driving tests.
  15. Check out Parks Victoria website. Heaps of info, events etc.
  16. Looking after your employees welfare and best interests is illegal? Since when?
  17. Some medical facilities are free. Some gp consultations are entirely covered by Medicare if the doctor wants to bill it that way. Generally you pay a fee for seeing a doctor, and you claim part of that back from Medicare. NHS is the UK health service. GP is so general practitioner ; ie a doctor, Gp consultation is paid per visit.
  18. I guess you need to check your partners employment contract. An employer with any savvy would have this type of scenario (employee choosing to return to home country) covered in the contract.
  19. I wouldn't have thought that it makes any difference. Same job, but you have a few subordinates. A plumber with an apprentice or two is still a plumber.
  20. Ours took just over 3 months from application submission to visa grant. Prior to submission it took a few months to get all the paperwork prepared. Your situation sounds more than just a bit odd. There's a lot more than just a few bits of paper that you need to be actively involved in. Create your own user account on the immigration website, import you application into your newly created account using your reference number. You'll soon find out if it is a "real" application!
  21. I disagree. The SNP doesn't care what your nationality is; only that you reside in Scotland and care about what happens in Scotland. There are plenty of groups of all Nationalities, religions, creeds actively participating alongside and affiliated with the SNP. The "nationalist" associated with the likes of the BNP and other parties of that ilk is an entirely different type of individual.
  22. Where did you read that? Insurance companies aren't the immigration police. :-) I've had a few dealings with insurance companies here. Never has residency been questioned. Upon a claim, all they ask for is your policy number, and the details of the parties involved. You give them your info; they calculate the risk and work out a fee for the proposal to insure you. You either decline, or accept and pay for the contract. If a road incident occurs, then you are covered.
  23. Try any of the usual insurance companies online (AAMI, budget, compare the Meerkat! :-)). The fact that you are a backpacker isn't really an issue. You just need contact details, the vehicle details and the ability to pay. I would imagine that the premium would be heavily weighted for an 18 year old.
  24. You may not know that a CO has been appointed until you get notification that the application has been successful. That is what happened with our application. We put the sponsoring employer details in for all dependants.
  25. Plenty of immigrants have ventured to Australia on an income of far less than the figure mentioned above. Regardless of what you earn, you live within your means. You'll never know unless you go! (Plagiarised from the old NI tourist board ad) :-)
