      1. Phoning back to the UK

Hi all We are trying to think of the cheapest way to phone back from Oz to the UK when we get there and also for people to be able to get hold of us without it costing a fortune. Hubby is thinking we should get a basic £5 per month SIM card that allows you to use your phone in Australia. Not even sure these exist. Googling is saying that a phone card with a landline is best. Any advice gratefully received! Thanks. Zoe
      2. Mobile Phone SIM Card

We arrive in Melbourne next week & will need to get new SIM cards for our mobile phones. Can anyone tell me where you can buy these & what the best network is in terms of coverage etc around the Melbourne area? Thank you!
      3. Surely it isn't as hard as this

Okay for the last week i have been scrambling around trying to find an internet / broadband provider and finally signed up with the only one who does service here. I am away on the install date they gave me so after 6 hours on hold or on the phone to various departments we have established that the earliest alternative connection date is July. Even then they are unable to give me a date as yet. I desperately need the internet for my work. I have tried everyone but Santa Claus and even offered to pay a premium for the connection but no one is able to help me. I guess if one company has a monopoly there is no rush. :dull: I am so p'd off to be stuck with this rotten dongle that loads about 6Kb per second and takes ages to load each page and constantly loses connection. The previous internet provider in the other house was no better. That never worked and I had to go through trading standards to get the contract cancelled and my money refunded. :frown: I think it's time that I concede defeat on this one and admit that it will probably never happen. :no:Roll on 2015 and the national broadband network. :arghh:
      4. My OH is coming to oz for a week on a visit visa. We would get our pr maybe a month or two later. He needs a mobile connection, preferably with Skype but ok without if it's much cheaper. How does he go about it when he arrives? Can he get a sim at the airport? Are Payg sims and rates very costly? Any help much appreciated.
      5. important phone numbers

Hi mates I wonder if you could inform me about those important numbers you need to know when you are in Sydney (Police, ambulance, emergencies, taxis etc..) Do you have a simple summary with these phone numbers? Thanks in advance
      6. Hi I suppose clue in the title! We are sorting out the utlities for our new rental place and have been looking at these, but not sure which are the best providers to go through. We will use the internet a bit, Skype that sort of thing, maybe listen to some radio via the listen again, downloading music. Would also like a telephone as obviously will want to make some phone calls locally. Also we may need to call back to the UK in an emergency, but that wont be regular as we will arrange to Skype. Any views of what to avoid and what you guys have found useful would be great! Thanks!!
      7. Phone Scam -Centrelink

Just a quick heads up:wubclub: CENTRELINK customers are being warned of a phone scam that has targeted New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria residents. The scam, which began in recent weeks, involves people being called by someone pretending to work for Centrelink claiming they are owed a payment of up to several thousand dollars. The caller then instructs the person to send money, usually several hundred dollars via cheque, in order to release the funds. Centrelink says it would never call anyone and ask for money. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) received 42,000 reports of scams and reported losses totalling more than $63 million during 2010. Anyone who suspects they have received a scam phone call is urged to report it to the ACCC on 1300 795 995.
      8. Mobile phone cost

Hi Anyone advise on approximate monthly cost of iphone or equivalent in Oz please. I know it will vary depending on type of package but a guide price would be great - ta Carla
      9. TV, phone and broadband providers?

What are peoples opinions and service experiences of tv, phone and broadband providers? Who are they and what are there prices like? I have Sky here in the UK for all three so hoping I can get similar in Australia. Maybe a poll could be set up? Any links to webites would be usefull. Thanks

      13. Do in car phone chargers work in Oz

Was just wondering if my in car phone charger here in the UK will work in Oz cars/vans? Basically are the cigarette lighters in vehicles the same as in the UK. I'm pretty sure they must be, but thought I'd get it confirmed.... Cheers in advance John
      14. Why can't these two companies grow up and start working together. A few weeks ago Apple won an order to stop Samsung with their galaxy and now Samsung are coming back at Apple:wub::no: Maybe we should look at legal action between Mc Donalds and Hungry Jacks, because they both sell burgers:wideeyed: SOUTH Korea's Samsung Electronics says it is trying to block the sale of Apple's newest iPhone in Japan and Australia, escalating its legal battle with the US giant after several setbacks. Samsung said in a statement on Monday it had filed for preliminary injunctions in courts in Tokyo and NSW, seeking a ban on sales of the iPhone 4S on the grounds it infringes Samsung's technology patents. It said it is also seeking a sales ban on the iPhone 4 and iPad2 in Japan. "Apple has continued to violate our patent rights and free-ride on our technology. We will no longer stand idly by and will steadfastly protect our intellectual property," the company said.
      15. Hi, please can you help us, we are looking to arrive in oz in about 6months but cant seem to understand there mobile phone packages, what is "capped" etc, on contracts, also is it best to get iphone on contract or sim only, dont have i phone yet gut was thinkin of buying one here then getting sim only but they seem expensive???:goofy:
      16. I am not sure if any of you are aware but if you spend over 180 days in a 2 year period out of phone service ie if you do a lot of travelling/fishing/camping you are eligible for a grant of up to 50% off a satellite phone up to a maximum of $700 rebate. We recently got one a few months back. If you live in an area where there is no signal you are eligible for 85% payment towards one, but not more than $1000. I have attached the application here (you may need to log in to view) as I am sure there will be a lot of members who qualify. 17. I phone in app purchases

:mad::mad: I'm sorry but I love my iPad and iPhone and often download games but I'm fed up of the new games where they are free to download but you have to pay for everything one game has an in app purchase of $109:shocked: I wouldn't mind paying $25 for a game but the constant pay, pay, pay is ridiculous
      18. Just here a week, trapped in Scarborough!! But am definately buying a phone asap! Is there such a thing as a carphonewarehouse type shop in Aus where you can go in and explain what your needs are and they will tell you which mobile co. or plan to go for?? I'll be mostly ringing someone already on Telstra so should I go for telstra myself?? And i'll be texting and possibly ringing Irish mobiles too so does any company give deals on that?? I'd google it myself but on very dodgy wifi that keeps dropping out so it's very difficult. any advice appreciated.
      19. Just a gripe really. I have credit cards in 2 countries. Have shown a bank statement with decent funds. Proof of paying car insurance and utilities here. My Oz driving licence - credit card statements from overseas. But can't get a $19 cap plan because I haven't got a job!:policeman: Its $19 for goodness sake! I hate being "dependant" and really don't want to have this off the OH bank account. Just annoyed at the reality of it all Vicky
      20. Hi everyone, This is my first post here. I have been in Australia for 10 months and to be honest life has just become too hard. So many things have gone wrong in the last 3 months, too many to list, and now ive had the phone call we all dread. My mum has died suddenly, still not sure what happened as she was only 61, awaiting the post mortem, but its one more thing thats knocked the stuffing out of me. Im not sure how much longer I can keep rolling with the punches and Im starting to feel that life here really isnt worth all the heartache that comes with it. Has anyone else felt like this and is the life here really worth missing out on the time we have with family. Im sorry to sound so negative but Im really struggling to find the positive in anything at the moment. Sorry to offload and thanks for listening Badger
      21. Cheap pre-paid mobile phone

Hi I have been using my old cell phone thinking that when I get to Oz I will look around and find a new cell phone - and take a bit of time to look around and find something I want. However, my battery has pretty much died now and I will need to get something asap at the other end (makes sense to wait for the Oz plug connection). I don't want to rush buy a more expensive phone and so was wondering if there are any basic mobiles that are quite cheap and where is the best place to get one - I think I remember someone saying something about being able to pick one up at a supermarket. I just need something to talk and sms/txt. Thanks Vicky
      22. Internet & Phone Connection

Hi, Have any other new arrivals had difficulty getting internet & phone connections? I´ve just taken a let on a property and going through the process of getting utilities connected, all going ok so far, until got to internet. Evidently I keep failing the credit checks! Hardly surprising as I´ve only been in the country a couple of weeks!

      24. New phone scam

Just thought i would share this email with you that i have received!! PHONE SCAM TO BE AWARE OF From another group. I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was dis-connecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date.. The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental! I asked the guy's name - he gave me the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent - & phone number - 0800 0800 152. Obviously the fellow realized I didn't believe his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would dis-connect my phone to prevent this. AND HE DID !! My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again. Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made and he said credit card, there and then. I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT. He hung up. I dialled 1471 - number withheld I phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognized., so I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently, but it is escalating. Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, So please make as many friends & family aware of this. How is it done? This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800 152 which takes you through to BT Business. The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable. By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get past merchant services - it is all about getting the credit card details which include the security number so that it can be used for far larger purchases.
      25. Hello, I applied for a job at the Royal Adelaide Hospital last week, and have been called for an interview. they have agreed to do this by phone as i do not arrive until August. Has anyone had a phone interview, how was it, and has anyone got any idea what kind of questions they ask in Oz nursing interviews? I imagine there will always be 'tell me about yourelf' one, but are there other subjects they always try to cover? Will I be expected to know anything about nursing in Oz? Thanks, wee bit nervous/ excited! Gill x
