    Phoning back to the UK

Hi all We are trying to think of the cheapest way to phone back from Oz to the UK when we get there and also for people to be able to get hold of us without it costing a fortune. Hubby is thinking we should get a basic £5 per month SIM card that allows you to use your phone in Australia. Not even sure these exist. Googling is saying that a phone card with a landline is best. Any advice gratefully received! Thanks. Zoe
  2. Reading a report that most users have vast amounts of apps installed but only use on average ten a day, how many do you have and use on a regular basis also which is the got to app in your arsenal?

    Mobile Phone SIM Card

We arrive in Melbourne next week & will need to get new SIM cards for our mobile phones. Can anyone tell me where you can buy these & what the best network is in terms of coverage etc around the Melbourne area? Thank you!
  4. Tesco have just realeased their new International phone cards, they are an absolute bargain, we put £5 on one which gave us 250 minutes from UK to Australia (from a landline) thats only 2p per minute, and its only 10p per minute from a mobile phone. Thought people might want to pass this on to friends and family in the UK, so they have no excuse not calling to Australia :chatterbox:

Surely it isn't as hard as this

Okay for the last week i have been scrambling around trying to find an internet / broadband provider and finally signed up with the only one who does service here. I am away on the install date they gave me so after 6 hours on hold or on the phone to various departments we have established that the earliest alternative connection date is July. Even then they are unable to give me a date as yet. I desperately need the internet for my work. I have tried everyone but Santa Claus and even offered to pay a premium for the connection but no one is able to help me. I guess if one company has a monopoly there is no rush. :dull: I am so p'd off to be stuck with this rotten dongle that loads about 6Kb per second and takes ages to load each page and constantly loses connection. The previous internet provider in the other house was no better. That never worked and I had to go through trading standards to get the contract cancelled and my money refunded. :frown: I think it's time that I concede defeat on this one and admit that it will probably never happen. :no:Roll on 2015 and the national broadband network. :arghh:
  6. My OH is coming to oz for a week on a visit visa. We would get our pr maybe a month or two later. He needs a mobile connection, preferably with Skype but ok without if it's much cheaper. How does he go about it when he arrives? Can he get a sim at the airport? Are Payg sims and rates very costly? Any help much appreciated.
  7. I am moving to Mackay, QLD (in just over a week) and I would like to get, as soon as I can, a mobile phone and broadband to be able to contact home etc. Can anyone recommend a good mobile phone operator who also supplies a high speed "dongle" for broadband? And what do they normally charge? Or would I be better off not getting a "dongle" and going for something else? Obviously, speed is of the essence so I imagine getting the "dongle" would be the quickest way to get broadband? I had an optus mobile when I was on my WHV, I had no problems with them but I didn't have any "dongle" back then! Thanks in advance for the advice.
  8. Hi People, Just had a email from Tra saying I haven't provided enough info so they will contact me to conduct a phone interview. Does anyone have any info on what sort of questions they are going to ask (as I said was being assesed as a 1st class welder) and how long it will last for? Thanks for you help
  9. Hi I suppose clue in the title! We are sorting out the utlities for our new rental place and have been looking at these, but not sure which are the best providers to go through. We will use the internet a bit, Skype that sort of thing, maybe listen to some radio via the listen again, downloading music. Would also like a telephone as obviously will want to make some phone calls locally. Also we may need to call back to the UK in an emergency, but that wont be regular as we will arrange to Skype. Any views of what to avoid and what you guys have found useful would be great! Thanks!!

shipping cat, need oz phone number?

Sorry if this has been asked before! We have decided (finally!) to take our cat to Adelaide with us. Have started getting quotes, but quite a few have said we need an address and phone number in OZ to apply for permit? This is a bit difficult, seeing as we don't have one! I have short term rental booked which I believe has a phone and I can probably get the number, but if they phone before I get there then whoever answers will have no idea what they are talking about? I have a friend in Brisbane that I email about twice a year, and could probably get her phone number, but seems a bit cheeky? Does anyone have any ideas, and do you always need a phone number? It even says not mobile? Thanks Gill and Spooky x

    Phone Scam -Centrelink

Just a quick heads up:wubclub: CENTRELINK customers are being warned of a phone scam that has targeted New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria residents. The scam, which began in recent weeks, involves people being called by someone pretending to work for Centrelink claiming they are owed a payment of up to several thousand dollars. The caller then instructs the person to send money, usually several hundred dollars via cheque, in order to release the funds. Centrelink says it would never call anyone and ask for money. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) received 42,000 reports of scams and reported losses totalling more than $63 million during 2010. Anyone who suspects they have received a scam phone call is urged to report it to the ACCC on 1300 795 995.

  20. Was just wondering if my in car phone charger here in the UK will work in Oz cars/vans? Basically are the cigarette lighters in vehicles the same as in the UK. I'm pretty sure they must be, but thought I'd get it confirmed.... Cheers in advance John
  21. Why can't these two companies grow up and start working together. A few weeks ago Apple won an order to stop Samsung with their galaxy and now Samsung are coming back at Apple:wub::no: Maybe we should look at legal action between Mc Donalds and Hungry Jacks, because they both sell burgers:wideeyed: SOUTH Korea's Samsung Electronics says it is trying to block the sale of Apple's newest iPhone in Japan and Australia, escalating its legal battle with the US giant after several setbacks. Samsung said in a statement on Monday it had filed for preliminary injunctions in courts in Tokyo and NSW, seeking a ban on sales of the iPhone 4S on the grounds it infringes Samsung's technology patents. It said it is also seeking a sales ban on the iPhone 4 and iPad2 in Japan. "Apple has continued to violate our patent rights and free-ride on our technology. We will no longer stand idly by and will steadfastly protect our intellectual property," the company said.
  22. I am not sure if any of you are aware but if you spend over 180 days in a 2 year period out of phone service ie if you do a lot of travelling/fishing/camping you are eligible for a grant of up to 50% off a satellite phone up to a maximum of $700 rebate. We recently got one a few months back. If you live in an area where there is no signal you are eligible for 85% payment towards one, but not more than $1000. I have attached the application here (you may need to log in to view) as I am sure there will be a lot of members who qualify. I phone in app purchases

:mad::mad: I'm sorry but I love my iPad and iPhone and often download games but I'm fed up of the new games where they are free to download but you have to pay for everything one game has an in app purchase of $109:shocked: I wouldn't mind paying $25 for a game but the constant pay, pay, pay is ridiculous
  24. Just here a week, trapped in Scarborough!! But am definately buying a phone asap! Is there such a thing as a carphonewarehouse type shop in Aus where you can go in and explain what your needs are and they will tell you which mobile co. or plan to go for?? I'll be mostly ringing someone already on Telstra so should I go for telstra myself?? And i'll be texting and possibly ringing Irish mobiles too so does any company give deals on that?? I'd google it myself but on very dodgy wifi that keeps dropping out so it's very difficult. any advice appreciated.
  25. Just a gripe really. I have credit cards in 2 countries. Have shown a bank statement with decent funds. Proof of paying car insurance and utilities here. My Oz driving licence - credit card statements from overseas. But can't get a $19 cap plan because I haven't got a job!:policeman: Its $19 for goodness sake! I hate being "dependant" and really don't want to have this off the OH bank account. Just annoyed at the reality of it all Vicky
