Mayby it is a 'wobble' but me & Hubby both have our doubts that this is the right state for us

We live in a lovely area, have a lovely house & youngest Son loves his school (as much as a kid can love school!) ~ But something doesnt feel right

I have had plenty of wobbles....completely normal....at least you haven't discounted oz altogether! Like you said give it some time and perhaps you can point of finger on why you and OH have come to this, research other states to see if they tuck the boxes. I'm sure someone else will be along that has been in this situation. :)

It would be good to put your finger on what "doesn't feel right" to know whether another location in Australia may suit you better. But it may take you some time to analyse exactly what is missing. I guess it will gradually become clearer. All the best.

Ok, I was a little hesitant of posting what im not liking/missing, as I never thought I would feel this way....But here goes:

The lack of greenery is hard, I still dont know that I can get used to the fact my kids have to always be aware of killer spiders & snakes (so been thinking NZ!) The lack of Family friendly restaurants & to be honest, havent found these friendly people that are supposed to live here!

There are lots of people who jump states, I wouldn't say I made the wrong choice moving to Melbourne but I'm not a city person, I wanted warmer weather, countryside, gorgeous scenery/beaches more of a laid back lifestyle and I found it in FNQ.

Why New Zealand? Why not hire a camper van over the school holidays and travel around Oz a little first, I'm sure there are other places you would love

What age child/children? Others in the Perth area might be able to make suggestions. It may be that there are more organised activities for children that you are not aware of? I know that in this city - Hobart, which is considerably smaller than Perth - a child could spend the whole week doing activities especially for his/her age group, but it does take a while to find out what is available and where.

Yes, WA can be a bit dry and barren through the summer months! It greens up more when the rains come in Winter.

Have you been down to South West WA yet? Much greener & prettier than Perth in relation to natural landscapes etc.

Snakes and spiders, well you will find them anywhere in Australia, but you kind of get used to it. As long as your kids know the drill they should be OK.

I lived in WA for 17 years all up, I did see snakes but really not that many, they usually get out of the way before you see them. Here in QLD I have them in my garden.

I do agree with you re the friendliness, people are friendly on the surface but that's mostly as far as it goes (in my experience anyway) though my work colleagues were mostly great and we did socialise out of work . But I am quite a quiet person anyway at first so maybe it was just me!

Sometimes you can even be in the wrong area of the state. Some people settle in the new suburbs up north and down south. These areas would be my idea of hell just to get a nice new house. I have been here 7 years and have seen one snake. My kids aren't bothered about snakes and spiders and never have been. The house gets sprayed regularly and if they leave their shoes outside the get a good shake before they put them on. It doesn't have to be difficult you know. I have taken my kids to lots of restaurants in Perth, what sort of place are you looking for. Some people aren't destined to be immigrants and there is nothing wrong with that. Perhaps identify what it is you hoped to gain by moving to Australia and then you can move forward.

Come to Melbourne Kelly - not the city as Kate says it is really built up.

But get to the edge of the suburbs and there is still a heck of a lot going on - weather is not too hot - no real humidity (at least not when it is hot) yet the weather is blimmin good if you are comparing it to the UK...

And I'm here - I'm friendly although you wouldn't believe it I just need to get up off my arse.

Big Hugs you will sort it. BIL in NZ sounds wet and chilly on the south island - shakes a bit where he is too!

I should preface this by saying that I'm leaving Perth for the UK this year. But if I was ever to return to Oz I wouldn't return to WA so I understand where you're coming from. I know why we moved here, had a couple of friends here who helped us get settled and had a couple holidays. Living here, I have found, is a lot different to having a holiday here. I'm not a beach person so what on earth possessed me to think I'd be happy here long term is a mystery.

We love Melbourne and if we come back to Oz that is where we would go. It's just a personality thing I reckon, nothing wrong with Perth or WA per se but just doesn't suit us.

Aw Kelly, first off alot more greener SOR that is one thing I am not fond of NOR but then again NOR by the coast only started building up from the early 1990's from Hillarys upwards, ( could have been a bit earlier). There are unfriendly people everywhere, just leave them to it, and enjoy the friendly people. The spiders and snakes I can understand but I am sure you are always checking your surroundings. There are a few family friendly restaurants, Hogs Breath, Sizzlers,Nero's but then again not everyone likes them, I know there are a few more NOR but could'nt tell you which or where they are. You did'nt seem to like SOR from what I can remember but maybe coming down and having alook around a few areas that will leave you close to the City,Fremantle and the beaches would be a good idea or even checking out more places NOR that you might enjoy better, I do hope it all works out for you, if you need any help or just want a chat let me know, take care, Laney xxx:hug:

NZ is very beautiful...but you will have to be aware of killer earthquakes!

I think getting to know people is more difficult in a big city...especially one which is growing quickly.

This state (Tasmania) is greener than WA and does have 4 seasons, killer spiders (if there are any) stick to the wilderness and snakes virtually hibernate in the winter so they are not a year round problem. There is a smaller population so not such a choice of jobs but the natives are reputed to be friendly - at least our last PIO recruit ("runslikeafish") - seems to think so in his blog

(See his entry for 16 December).

Re the green ... well it's summer and all the green turns brown, it'll green up again in winter when the rain comes

Theme parks .. well we only have the one - we have friends who have season tickets to Adventure world, but if you want theme parks then you'd best be on the Gold Coast although my hubby said this reminds him of benidorm, but if you've visited the theme parks in Florida then like us you can't help but compare (and Florida wins).

Spiders/snakes .. I think this to be honest is about your newness - I remember worrying that the kids would pick things up, get bitten. In 5 years I haven't seen one snake, and only a couple of redbacks and a huntsman - the anxiety and constant worry of it does wear off and I think you'd feel like that irrespective of the state you were living in.

I can honestly say that we haven't had an issue with family restraunts and have never felt they weren't family friendly, although there are one or two places that we wouldn't take the kids to. Sometimes, it's not the state but the suburb - I can't remember where you live Kelly, but perhpas looking at somewhere closer to the city or Fremantle or even Bunbury which has very much a town feel to it may tick your boxes.

On the other hand, it may be that WA just isn't for you - despite all the reseach we really don't know what it's going to be like until we actually live here. We always said that if we didn't like WA we'd try a different suburb initially then a different state - Australia is a big place

Hi Kelly

I did have those feelings in WA and wondered if WA was the place for us to settle. Our circumstances to move were forced on us by my husbands work and we have been in QLD for the past four months. QLD is greener with some beautiful landscapes etc but we have had loads of rain, humidity and flooding. It is not that I don't like QLD but I really preferred WA.

I think maybe it is because the children were so settled there and I am so proud of how they have handled 2 big moves in less than a year. They have really given it their all here despite the tears.

It is hard with children, my younger ones seem to adapt quickly to new areas although new schools have been a bit daunting for them, it is my eldest that has struggled.

He has missed his friends from WA so much and struggled to make friends here.

We are hoping to get back to WA in the near future and would love to travel to other areas of Oz too.

nothing wrong with the the feelings you are having. there is far far more to Australia than Perth and WA.

its the least appealing state as far as im concerened, but thats my opinion.

the great thing about Australia is each state is really different, so go on a trip and see where suits you better!

no reason to think you cant change!

I can only really offer you any comforting words in relation to the snakes and spiders. I have lived in Aust all my life so please believe me when I tell you that you really don't have to worry. As long as you teach your kids not to pick things up they will be just fine (and so will you).
