methaneman
Ok I've been having a tinker with this for a little while and think I've got it pretty close. I've developed an Excel spreadsheet that provides an estimate of whether or not your car is Category A: definitely worth bringing, you'll do nicely out of it when the time comes to sellCategory B: only worth bringing if you love the car and/or plan to keep it for a while Category C: not worth the aggro, you're better off selling it in the UK*Disclaimers* - the estimates are based on the following:1) using my services at AUD990 (it's set up for my customers, obviously!)2) using RORO shipping from Southampton (does not include transport to get your car to the port)3) the current GBP/AUD exchange rate4) a customs value at 75% of the normal market value5) includes customs duty and GST5) a set figure for dock charges (which I've deliberately set higher than what they normally come in at)6) includes the cost of a valuation and transport to the workshop once cleared7) includes $1000 for minor modifications needed for registration8) does NOT include registration costs (because you pay that on all cars, whether they're imported or bought here in Australia)As you can see, I've tried to be as upfront about the costs of getting the vehicle to Australia, and I have actually over-allowed on what many bills come in at. There are a heap of variables in here and each car is different, so don't be disheartened if you get a category C - the calculator isn't meant to be the ultimate authority, but it will give you a fair guide. What I need from you:1) Year/make/model/mileage/aircon or no aircon2) Market value in the UK (be realistic!)3) Market value in Australia (search via www.redbook.com.au and make sure you click right through to the description to get the correct price ranges - if you don't chances are you're looking at the price it was sold at when it was new)Let's test it out :biggrin:Hi Iron Chef,I have been reading this thread with some interest and thanks to your information have discovered I cannot bring my LHD Hymer motorhome, it is not worth bringing my old renault laguna estate (bored with it anyway) however, it would be interesting to know whether it would be worth bringing my Motorbike? It is a 2006 KTM 525 XC Desert Racer (Obviously no aircon), mileage is around 6,000, market value in UK is around £3,000, market value in Australia - $5,300 to $6,300 (can't find exact model on the redbook site). Might consider fitting it in the container! by the way we are Jo and Jon

Just wondering how much the total cost of getting your car sorted was, once you got over there, taxes, child seat anchors, registration, charges for valets and anything else you might have had to pay for. Did you have it cleaned before you shipped it, some people say I should, others are telling me there is no need as you have to have it done once it gets over there at a cost. Any help would be great. I laughed at zircon If that's all their worth in the UK, I'm packing my bags. Happy to pay you GBP29K myself to take it off your hands if you do the paperwork to get it over haha $110K is around the right Aussie value, so yes you will have some LCT, but even allowing for that you'll be MILES in front. Hello, Please could you tell me if it is worth bringing our car.Volvo C30 R-Design 1.6 Diesel (2010 model) with 47000 km, Air conditioning. UK Market value: £13000 Redbook Market value: $24800. Thanks That's a category C, suprisingly. I went back and had a look at the Redbook values, because it sounds quite low for a market value here - the R-design was only sold in petrol here, so there's no real equivalent, but I suspect high $20Ks would be a more realistic market value, which would bump it into category B. Hello I'm so pleased I found your post. I'd appreciate your expert advice please. 2004 VW Bora 100,000 miles Sports 1.8 6 speed Air Con Tortoiseshell detail doors, dash Diesel £5,400 UK $54,800 AUS Many Thanks $54,800 was the new price for the top of the range V6, they're worth around AUD10K these days, which makes it a category C.
