1) Year/make/model/mileage/aircon or no aircon

2) Market value in the UK (be realistic!)

3) Market value in Australia (search via http://www.redbook.com.au and make sure you click right through to the description to get the correct price ranges - if you don't chances are you're looking at the price it was sold at when it was new)

1) 2008/9 Honda Civic 1.8 Exec 6 speed, 30k and yes with dual climate control a/c and built in sat nav etc

2) £8000

3) $25k

Fingers crossed

Does your calculator work for and do you ship motorbikes too??

It's a category A based on those figures. I can ship motorbikes too, no probs there, but I'm not sure how they would work in the calculator, I can give it a crack though if you have some figures for me.

Hi Iron Chef,

Thought I'd have a go too...although I suspect I'll be C!

2003/Toyota/Corolla/50000/no aircon

Probably only £3000

Apparently $23 890

Thanks,

Rachel

Hi Rachel - $23K is the new car price ;) And yes, Category C.

Hi Iron Chef

We have a 2009 honda civic 1.4 si/20k/aircon

8-9k value

redbook didnt have the exact one so im guessing around $20k

Thanks very helpful thread :)

On paper, Category B, in reality, Category C.

Sorry, I should have mentioned this before, but if your car has an engine that is smaller than any of the ones offered in Australia, take around $5000 off the market value in Australia. We're gradually moving to smaller cars, but in general we still prefer to have plenty of grunt under our right foot if we need to overtake a road train ;)

Two cars for me please

1. 2005 (55) / BMW / 325i SE Touring (Manual) / 45k miles / with Climate Control

2. £8k

3. No direct equivelant as they didn't sell Touring in Aus so Saloon is Au$ 26k-28k (in the UK Touring normally work £2k more)

1. 1999 (T) / Porsche / 911 (996) Carrera Cabriolet Tiptronic S / 80k Miles / with A/C

2. £16k

3. Mid point is about Au$50k

Thanks

We have just the one car that we'd like to bring if it would be worth it (we've only had this one a year and we really quite like it):

Fiat Useless (AKA Ulysse) 2.0 16V Eleganza, 2005, 32,000 miles, climate control

Worth around £4,000 in the UK and can't find anything similar on redbook

We've heard that bringing Eurpoean cars could end up being quite costly in spares,

Thanks.

Hi mate

Would be garteful if you could take a look at mine before I actually put it in the container in a couple of weeks. Already got import approval but a final check would be good.

Renault Megane CC 2006. 55k mileage. £4k UK and around A$16k I believe

Much appreciated

Si

Category A for both. You've chosen well!

Without plugging it into the calculator, I'd say sell it off - it would be an orphan in Australia, and when the time came to sell it, it would be harder to shift than a baked-on oven stain. Your only hope would be if a truly fanatical Fiat tragic were to fall in love with it, but let's face it, it ain't no Picasso ;)

Hi hope you can point me in the right direction.

We have a Audi Tt and moving to Perth.

55k Miles

UK value 5500

Australian c. 20000

The downside is that we are coming on a 457 visa initially can we still import

1) Year/make/model/mileage/aircon or no aircon

Mercedes / C200 CDI Avantgarde Estate / 46,000 miles / Aircon

2) Market value in the UK (be realistic!)

£9000

3) Market value in Australia (search via http://www.redbook.com.au and make sure you click right through to the description to get the correct price ranges - if you don't chances are you're looking at the price it was sold at when it was new)

$28,800 - $32,200

*NB I havent seen reference to this yet, so wanted to ask the question - I havent owned the car for 12 months yet, bought it in August 2011, so if I'm moving to Oz (Sydney) in April 2012, can I leave the car behind, apply for the import approval and ship it when it's reached the 12 months ownership criteria?

Any help appreciated...

Jamie

Category A. 457 is fine for importing your own car.

Hi Jamie, unfortunately not - as a general rule, you need to be in the country and using the car during the 12 month qualifying period.

Should also have added that we'll be on a 457 visa, in case that affects things...

See above :)

Hi There,

INterested to see if worth bringing our 2 cars with us to Aus:

Both owned for more than 12 months;

Car 1

1) Year/make/model/mileage/aircon or no aircon: 2006/VOLVO/V50 SE Geartronic D5 Diesel Auto with Climate Control/Aircon - mileage = 67000miles

2) Market value in the UK (be realistic!) - £9000

3) Market value in Australia (search via http://www.redbook.com.au and make sure you click right through to the description to get the correct price ranges - if you don't chances are you're looking at the price it was sold at when it was new) A$17500

Car 2

1) Year/make/model/mileage/aircon or no aircon - 2009 / Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Auto Design with aircon / 35000miles

2) Market value in the UK (be realistic!) - £6500

3) Market value in Australia (search via http://www.redbook.com.au and make sure you click right through to the description to get the correct price ranges - if you don't chances are you're looking at the price it was sold at when it was new) Hard to value in Australia as this model is not available there.... we paid £7750 at 18 months old about 16 months ago...

Thanks for your advice....

Hey iron lady,

My husband and I intend to move to oz in roughly 12 months. We currently need to buy a new used car. Something baby friendly not too big (I am tiny) and around £8000. We hadn't considered taking a car over with us but after reading this thread, I think we should be giving strong consideration into the car that we purchase in relation to how it may sell in oz in the future.

We were thinking of buying a Nissan Qashqai (Dualis) but now we are open to any suggestions. In your experience, do any make/model spring to mind that we should consider? Any assistance would be much appreciated.

My only prerequisites would be aircon, 5 door and not too big that I cant reach the peddles as I am under 5 foot!!

Thanks gnomee.

We have an EVO 6 1999,air con and sunroof ( not many made like that ) Its a UK car 82,000 on clock, Market Vaule in UK £7000. OH wants to sell it I want to take it.

The Evo 6 was not officially imported into the country (something to consider) but only a limited number of Tommi Makkinen Editions. On another forum I visit, some guy was selling his imported Evo 6 for around $16k. If its not about the money, bring it as it's quite a rare car (not many of the Evo models made it here), just bear in mind issues with rare cars eg. parts, servicing, insurance etc.

Try here for info: http://www.evolutionoz.net/

My EVO is not an import! It is a UK car It was one of the first to come to the UK. It was owned by Mitiubishi. Ralliart Evos are also UK cars. There are some imported evos out there. You are right it does cost alot to keep on the road!

Hi Iron Chef,

I'd like to bring over a 2003 Focus 1.8 TDCI with 85,000 miles, air con. UK price is approx £2,000 but can't find the car on redbook.

Also, a 2008 Honda CBR1000RR, 4,000 miles. UK price is £6,000 but unsure of AU pricing.

I have been toying with the idea of bringing my Lambretta over but i might sell it here as unsure of the market in Australia.

Thanks in advance...

Hi Ethan, if the Volvo is still worth that much in the UK then sell it there. Diesel would help its appeal when the time comes to sell it here, but realistically it's a category C.

As for the Corsa, that model was never sold here, so again, if you can get GBP6500 for it in the UK, I'd advise selling it there.

Ok forget the Dualis. My suggestions - any mid range European luxury car - Audi A6 (RS6 ideally), E class Mercedes Benz, BMW 5 series, or if you go for A4/3-series/C-Class choose the largest engine you can find.

Bring it, it's a category B. First things first, get under the back of the car and check the rust isn't too bad on the chassis rails!

^^That site is a great resource for Evo owners.

For the Focus, normally I'd say category C, but being a diesel helps bump it up to a B. How old is the Lambretta? Check here for bike values: http://redbook.com.au/bikes/

Being pre-1989 built, you can bring that over separate to all your other cars without having to go through the personal import process. It would be a crime not to bring it. RS2000s fetch pretty decent money here these days too.
