London Expo in Sept - any news???

Jobo

Recommended Posts

did anyone else apply to attend the Expo on 11 & 12 Sept in London hosted by Skills Australia? I remember there was a post on here a while ago but can't find it (well gave up searching after a few pages :err:)

anyway we applied and were told by e-mail that we would find out the outcome late August...well i may seem impatient but it is now the last day in August and still no news - good or bad but the Expo is only 11 days away.

has anyone else heard anything? would be interested to know...

cheers

Jo

I applied yesterday, and received confirmation the same day, with an online ticket for the 11th Sept. To be fair they did make it clear that they would only select you, if your trade/skills was one the exhibitors were looking for. If you are sure you fit the criteria maybe you should try again.

My OH is a Carpenter and is booked in on Sunday 12th Sept at 14.30, I am going to go with him but as I'm not invited and therefore not allowed in I was going to find a cafe or something, hopefully nearby and just wondered if anyone was doing the same and if they fancied meeting up?

The fact ICWA are not going isn't anything to do with a reduced need for skilled employees, please look at the recruitment page link and submit an expression of interest that way. Look at it this way if they had attended they would have come back with 100s of CVs, this way you will have far fewer people to compete with.

Jules

:-) did that about 3 weeks ago and got asked for my CV, so fingers crossed I guess. Do they reply even if they're not interested? I'll maybe send again or contact in about 2/3 months.

I applied, and having not received an email accepting or rejecting me, I just put my e-mail address/password into the expo website, and was taken to a page asking me to select my session.

I'm a Civil Engineer with 3 years experience. My friend with 2 years experience in Fire Safety Engineering was rejected.

I'm planning on talking to as many recruiters/employers as possible and leaving my CV with those that interest me.

Well, I am sat on the train on my way to the expo in London. Any excuse to get to the

big city:heart_head_nod_yes_..........

I am a nurse so thought it might be beneficial and it's free. Went to 1 a couple of years ago and in fact did find it quite good. You never know the immi & citizenship seminar might give us an update on things. There may be some inside information :biglaugh:

Will let you know the outcome. At the first session 9.30

Looking forward to hearing how beneficial people thought attending this was. I applied on my OH's behalf but was turned down, although I think I saw earlier on this thread another Welder who had received an invite

I will be back with an update. I am mad,:mad: I had just given my opinion of the day only for the internet on the blasted train to go.......

I WILL BE BACK.....

:chatterbox:Oh no poor you !

Hubby just called and he is leaving London now .

The day for him was ok gave out cvs ( mining companies were very interested in his trade and will contact him soon )

He deals with electronics and hydraulics etc One company said they have alot of jobs going and have been looking for people with his trade for 2 years !

FIFO ( FLY IN FLY OUT JOBS ) We as a family are used to him being away alot of the time in the navy so 9 days work then 6 days leave would be great for us )

I will update which companies wanted these trades when he gets back to plymouth .

He did go to a few states info tables but they can't do much due to the lists not out yet :l but were helpful in some questions .

:hug:Will give more info when he gets back to Plymouth

That was probably my OH. He decided not to go as it was clear from the info sent to us that there was only going to be one potential employer there looking for welders and since we are in Yorkshire the train fare was going to be £100 + and the lady I spoke to said herself that given that we already had a visa app waiting AND had ss already then there was probably very little to be gained for us. Had there been several more employers to see then it would have been worth it possibly.

I think healthcare professionals will do very well out of this expo. I had thought accountants would be sought after too as I saw that HAYS agency were going to be there and they are actually called Hays accountancy personnel. However after the email came through giving the specifics of who was going to be present, Hays were there representing 4 other specific company's looking, again for healthcare professionals.....

I found it pretty useful to talk to the different states (Electrician). Also Kentz took my cv and told me they'll be in touch in the next month about a sponsorship. Fingers crossed!!!

Well, I can say it was well worth a visit to London for me. I have had the evening to think about my new life in Oz. I have more or less been offered a job as a Urology nurse in Brisbane. I could start tomorrow if I could get there....... :arghh:Come on IMMI....GIVE ME MY VISA !!!!!!!!!!!!

All this time I have been scouting the internet for jobs, I have never come across jobs in Urology and this is what I have specialised in for 15 years. I am really excited but remaining cautious.. At least this would give me a start and get settled in. Stay with something I am familiar with while I find my feet.

Now back to the rest:

Seminar:

Employer nomination (ENS) & Regoional sponsorship are definitely the way forward. He kept emphasising this. Eventually this might be the only way but for now:

ENS & RSMS - LOOKING AT 5 - 7 MONTHS PROCESSING TIME.

SMP's - didn't say when these will be out, but will be looking at 6 - 12 months processing. Although on the slides it did say in the coming months, but that can mean anything. What coming month ??? Only the minister can let us know this.

GSM's looking at up to 3 years. So sorry to everyone not ENS OR RSMS OR SMP, you will be in for a long wait.

Anyone waiting for nursing registration with APHRA, well I am sorry but healthcare representatives today are not happy with them. I had a long conversation with this lovely lady fron ANMC and she is embarrassed with the way APHRA have being dealing with things. And she wanted tio know what I thought was the ruling about IELTS. But ANMC are just as confused as we are. I thanked her and said not to be apologising for someone elses incompetences, esspecially another firms incompetences. I tod her I got my skills assessment back in 3 weeks, which was fantastic.... Compliments to ANMC. Doing a good job !!!!

Spoke with IMMIGRATION representaive answering peoples questions individually and asked her about when SMP's come out, would we get put up to cat 2 if I had SS. Told her QLD only recently granted this. She said YES !!!!!!!!if you have SS, THEN i WILL GO TO CATEGORY 2. Yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee but still :skeptical:

Nothing much new really, but at least I managed to restock on pens. Sorry to those who are going tomorrow, I've probably taken them all. LOL.xx So all in all, a good day for me anyway, hopefully new job,she is gioing to contact me over the weekend, nice day out in the big city, quiet and peaceful with no kids........... but it does seem that ENS & RSMS are going to be the focus of immigration in the future

Hi all, my hubby went yesterday (light vehicle mechanic) and unfortunately it wasn't much use as far as employers go. Someone has already posted about the mining Fly in fly out, and that was the only one there for him (Rrio Tinto). Unfortunately this isn't what we want as a family, so it's back to sending CV's everywhere.

The lady at Rio Tinto said that my hubby would be better getting the extra points on an ELTS, which has confused me because we have enough points for 176 visa, and as far as I am aware ENS, RSMS and 457 are not points tested? My hubby is born and bred english and holds a UK passport. He actually talks quite posh, so I'm confused on this one. Can anyone shed any light on why an ELTS would help on a ENS and 457?

He did say that the WA state was every useful, but just confirming what we aleady know. They also kept stressing that ENS and RSMS was the VISA to apply for.

There was loads there for health professionals so good luck to everyone else.

You're right-the ENS, RSMS and 457 are not points based and so there is no use in doing an IELTS to get 25 points. Unless the Rio Tinto woman meant so he could then apply for a 175 visa? Just ignore what she said!

They are emphasising the employer sponsored visas because they are the number one priority in regard to processing times.

I'm curious as to why you are not interested in FIFO. Are you worried about the time apart during the week? Did the Rio Tinto woman suggest they'd sponsor your husband if he was interested in FIFO?

I know someone who does it and it works extremely well for his family and he is making a lot of money.

Just curious because if Rio Tinto were interested in sponsoring him it would be a very good opportunity to get your visa and get out there.

I thought the same as you, I was a bit dissapointed, the only employers remotely interested in my trade (Automotive electrician) were the mining companies. Having spent 22 years in the British Army I am fed up of being away from home, so I am reluctant to apply. The presentation from DIAC at the start suggested to me that they are steering more towards employer sponsored visas, however there always seems to be the same companies represented at these events, good if you are in a medical profession or want to work in the mines, trades don't seem to get much of a lookin, which is frustrating as I am always being told how much my trade is in demand. Whenever I go job hunting I am always told the same thing, I need to have a visa and be eligible to live in Australia, catch 22. Well done to Western Australia though as they seem to have their act together, I did find them very helpful plus they had their main industries supported at the event. I was hoping to get some news about processing times, my application went in in October 2008, I have since received state sponsorship from Victoria in February this year and was told that my state sponsorship will be from the date of my original visa application. No-one could give me any accurate timeline, or if I would be at the front of the queue, the only advice I got was to sit tight and wait for the SMP's as any other action, ie employer sponsorship would put me at the start of the queue again. The other minor gripe I have is that I was told that I would be meeting prospective employers, so I got my best suit on, all my CV's redone, just to find nearly everybody else wearing jeans and being confronted with generic agencies who preffered an e-mail copy of your CV. I won't bother next time. Out the Army in 3 months, no home, no job, was hoping to have my visa by now, if I get a good job in the UK I might be reluctant to move to Australia, I do know that Canada will take me, I can't stand the thought of settling in the UK though, somebody throw me a carrot please.

Good Morning

Thought I would add my thoughts. My OH and I went, well he went in I stayed outside and waited! He's a Carpenter and sadly it was a waste of time especially as we already have SS and are so far down the road already. He's no idea why he was invited as nobody there was after the trades, it was more for midwives, Dr's nurses and electrical engineers.

I think they need to be a lot lot clearer and not get peoples hope up especially for people that had so so far to travel think it was really naughty of them to be so vague on what was available and to whom.

I really would only recommend these Expo's if you are just about to start or have only just started the process.

Thanks Melbourne Girl, my hubby left his CV with them so we will see if they come back to us on that. It's just not ideal being away from home. I think the thought of going out there not knowing anyone and then my hubby being away alot makes me feel quite lonely. It's something we could consider but just not ideal that's all. :skeptical:

Hi

I dont normally post, im more of a lurker, but thought id share the info we got at the expo. I spoke with a helpful lady on the WA Government stand regarding the SMP. I asked her as we were an off-list nomination what are the chances of being on the SMP? She said WA were hoping to honor all existing sponsors for the SMP including off-list. They have put this forward to the immi dept and are fairly confident this will happen. (fingers crossed!) She said their SMP will be in place in the next 2-3 weeks.

I also spoke to a man on the immi stand regarding processing times. In their presentation they quoted cat 3 as being 18 months. I asked him how likely this is (as i know there are plenty of people on here waiting longer than 18 months). He said all cat 3 should be processed within 18 months and seemed a little surprised we didnt have a case officer. He advised me to lodge a PLE pointing out we are on the SOL, incase our application gets missed. He had advised alot of people to do the same and hes sure DIAC will thank him for the huge amount of PLE'S coming their way.

Thanks Conquest, how long has your application been in? My hubby forgot to ask about WA's processing times once they are accepting applications again, I don't suppose you asked this. I'm assuming because of the high volumes of people waiting for it to re-open for applications they are going to have a longer processing time.
