  1. We have taken the leap and found our ideal home. However we are having to break our lease agreement. This means we have your perfect house to rent up for grabs. The property is in Duncraig WA, close to local primary and high schools. Within walking distance of the train station. Small shopping precinct is about a 5 minute walk away. The house is a single story 4 x 2 on a 800 sq metre block. See, told you it was perfect. pm me if this interests you.
  2. we did the "stays" thing and found an excellent place in Illuka. theres only 3 of us but it would comfortably do for 2 adults and 2 kids. it was a converted garage, sounds a bit odd but it was perfect for us to get started and is about 1 minute walk from the best beach. the place is totally self contained and very nice. the owners were a great source of info as well, guiding us on all aspects of the process. we found it to be a great deal cheaper than a lot of other places we looked at while still in the uk. each to their own but i would recommend it. we did stay in perth city for the first 2 nights, just to acclimatise and sort out the bank cards and a hire car, then off up to illuka.
  3. We bought both a car and van off gumtree. No middle man to pay commission to. You just need to know what you're looking for and know how much its worth. Be prepared to haggle too. If you want to go through a dealer there's a lot in Wanaroo. Hope this helps.
  4. Dude….you've done the hardest bit by deciding you want to migrate. Now just get hard headed and start to plough through the next few steps. It's time consuming, frustrating at times, exhausting and blinkin stressful, but well worth the effort. Do LOTS of research, then when you think you're set, do some more. This site was one of the best tools we used to help make things a little clearer along the way. Also the government website was pretty straight forward (we did have to read some things through more than once). Keep asking questions and good luck.
  5. When you take into consideration the higher wages over here, things being 'expensive' are sometimes cheaper. We couldn't understand properly until we got here and stopped converting prices back to the pound. We earn dollars, so we now think in dollars and everything's relative. We shipped our dryer only to find it damaged when we unwrapped it. Make sure your insurance is covering everything. It will take you longer to do it but it's worth while to do an itemised list of your valuables and bulk items. Hope this helps.
  6. We were in a very similar situation to you guys. We started off with 2 nights in Perth city to get bank and rental car sorted, then moved NOR, Mullaloo, to a holiday let for 2 weeks. That gave us a bit of time to find a longer term rental house. Our main concern was my work and being in the same trade as you i've found the majority of jobs SOR, so being about 25 mins NOR is perfect. Good luck
  7. Next Direct does free deliveries and have a warehouse based in NSW. My better half does most of her clothes shopping there now.
  8. I would have binned a lot more stuff we didn't need. for the first 3 months we were here i lived off 4 tee shirts and 2 pairs of shorts. I'm still wearing them and haven't touched anything else thats turned up in our container, because basically over the years we've accumulated soooo much bumf we dont really need. Also i'd have moved years ago and not left it so long. It's just awesome here.
  9. I've had the same problem with 'carte noire'. Cant find it anywhere!! mother in law ships it from the uk but it's costing me a heap. Am just getting used to 'moccona' espresso instant. Amazon do ship, but it might be better in the long run to acclimatise.
  10. No birds were good for us. Reasonable price and handy on arrival.
  11. Hi guys, we live in Perth, northern burbs, and have a shed load of moving boxes. I will flat pack them all and supply a roll of tape to rebuild em. Will deliver just sor or upto 40k nor. Oh and they're free....yippee
  12. We've just had our stuff delivered with Pickfords. Got to say they've don't an amazing job door to door and customer service has been second to none. Oh and they were the cheapest by a lot!!
  13. I've used half of my luggage allowance on hand tools. When we checked in at Manchester airport I told them I had tools in 2 cases, all they wanted to do was x-ray them twice. Didn't open them. The next time I saw them was in Perth. They were concerned when I mentioned a Stanley knife, but because it was a retractable blade and below 7 inches long wasn't a problem. I would contact the airline about your wife's knifes to be advised how they need packing, they were very helpful with every query we had (and there were a few) hope this helps
  14. We took the plug off a small extension lead and brought that over. I then went to bunnings ( b+q ) and bought an ozzy plug to put on. It's been worth it's weight in gold for charging laptop, phones, the wife's hair straighteners and stuff like that. Saved us changing all the uk plugs.
