The Christian religion was also a religion of war. It was also spread in a similar way. That is what religions are. The current situation is a little more in line with the guy on the left. But there is truth in what you say simmo. There is a need for a progressive Islam in western society. If you can help bring that about then that would be a great thing. But that has nothing to do with the extreme fringe. In is Christianity you have the far right, so you will in Islam. That doesn't go away by moving the main to the center. It has been sorted! I'm sure if you talked with the pope about progression and said, first thing we need to do is burn that book, you would be shown the door. This is interesting religious conflict. Same as proddy on Catholic. If you ask Catholics to progress they may well do. If you ask them to become Protestant, well, good luck with that one. Personally I think the easiest way to progress is to increase the Muslim population in the media. Get people talking. Put the discussion out there. Then we can see what is reasonable and what is not.
