Singapore as a holiday destination

We stayed there for two weeks the first time we went and ran out of time to do everything we wanted to do so have been back a couple of times.

There is heaps to do there, it is really easy to get around, the people are lovely, it's clean and it's safe.

Singapore has a lot more to it then you realise and can easily keep you busy, we love Singapore for a break but stay away from the CBD at a place called the Orchid Country Club, which is a great resort style place for the kids but a little bit of a trek into the City on the MRT (free shuttle to the MRT station). Lots of things to explore!

We stayed in the main city for a week near to china town. Had a great time. Still plenty to go back for. Just me and hubbie so did different things than a family might. Very easy to get around on public transport even to the more far flung places outside the city. Never used a taxi.

Shame people think of it as just a stop over.

Too sanitised IMHO HH .. and getting more expensive by the hour ... but if you are fine with that .. theres good authentic food .. but you can get that in Perth already ... you can get good designer shopping .. but you can get that in Perth already ... you can get really humid and hot weather... thats Perth in late summer already.. what you wont get already in Perth is... Cinemas in the airport .... and a mega crowded super clean version of our ole 'london underground  ...

We always stay in a suite at the Royal Plaza on Scots. It is on the corner of Scott's and Orchard road so very convenient for shopping but also well positioned for transport. There is a major bus stop over the road where you can get the 'hop on, hop off' bus to major sightseeing places as well as to the Arab quarter etc etc. The staff at the hotel are wonderful and the service is seamless. They are incredibly helpful and there is a great gelato kiosk about 10 steps from the front door - we used to go down every night and try a new flavour :) Also, all the tours we wanted to do pick up either at the hotel or at the hotel across the road (can't remember the name).

The shops don't open till 10am but stay open really late. I mention this because I went to the shops at 8:30am on our fist day and was a tad disappointed I had to wait another couple of hours. Did I mention Prada is over the road from the hotel as well lol

I did not like Singapore. Found it oppressively hot and humid - incredibly so. Probably didn't help that I was staying at a mould and cockroach infested backpackers! I also thought it was very sterile and 'fake.' Not my scene at all. It was very efficient with lovely people though.

What's expensive and can you give some examples?

They didn't say, from our visit - wine was very expensive, $80 for 2 Singapore slings and 2 mock singapore slings, we ate at nice restaurants, but got ripped off at a Thai place in Clarke Quay, but we did cook in our apartment a couple of the nights.

We went last year on holiday two adults and an 8 yr old , we loved it . Its very humid ( well it was in October ).

we stayed on Orchard road at the Holiday inn , we found it very clean and lots to do , we also ran out of time 5 days wasn't enough ( we did a stop over from the UK ) .

The food we loved , there was enough choice to choose from ... the shopping was amazing and blew my brain , after living in WA for 6 years you tend to forget what's out there :)

Personally we found the prices about the same as here in WA and a bit more shop around for food and / gifts , food courts were cheaper to eat at but its mainly Singaporean food , which we loved my daughter wasn't so keen .

Sentosa island was fun and I would love to split it another time and stay on both .. advice would be add trip adviser and read through there too :)

We lived there for 5 years and loved it! Great food if you eat locally. Best advise I can give you is to ignore the table/chairs/floor if they look dirty, if there is a queue of locals at the counter, then you can guarantee the food is good. Locals will travel from one end of the island to the other to buy a $3 meal if it's good! We avoided the western food type places because they were usually a disappointment! Go to Newton Circus for great hawker food!

Was that at the long bar at Raffles? We went there because you can't really go to Singapore and not visit but I do remember thinking it was overpriced for what it was lol

We didn't really eat in many restaurants and instead tried to go to the places the locals go (food hall/ wagons etc). The food was excellent and really cheap although it was a far cry from fine dinning lol I do remember clutching a subway sandwich in my bag on one occasion though as my OH sat eating a soup thing with whole fish eyes bobbing around in it.

No, it was in the square around Clarke Quay - we didn't visit Raffles because we had the children with us. Eating out is part of our holiday generally, the Thai place was the only rip off.

ETA we didn't do a lot of shopping on this trip - but my daughter who has very dainty feet was in shoe heaven.

We are more likely to do the food hall thing, we love Asian food and while fine dining is awesome prefer a more casual feel usually so should be OK.

I've had to attend so many formal dinners etc in my life that I try really hard not to have to dress for dinner when we are on holidays. I am a vegetarian, as well as being really fussy, but even I was spoilt for choice (apart from the fish soup place lol).

You probably wont be disappointed but Id prefer to go to KL Malaysia instead.. much cheaper too .. most folk in Sing just reminds me of homogenised drones in a socialist democracy .. check out peak hour in the MRT for evidence..

I've never found Singapore expensive except for the big tourist areas (Clark Quay is awful). If you rent are car it's dead easy to get around, but generally easier using public transport. We've also stayed on Sentosa Island at the Shangri La, but didn't like Sentosa much (We love Shangri La hotels, but this was a letdown).

Shopping is cheap, eating and drinking is cheap.

But it it is important to venture away from the CBD to explore. I think Singapore has something for almost everyone.

My favourite places are the food courts in the North of the Island and East Coast Park.
