I was glad to hear this morning that the UK courts have sentenced the killers of the Woolwich Soldier, Lee Rigby to life sentences (45 years).

Well done to the UK for handing down a sentence which reflects the crime, it does not bring him back but sets a precedence and hopefully the family can take something from it.

Now Australia should follow and introduce harsher penalties.

I believe due to recent legislation passed in the last few weeks ( the judge delayed the sentencing until it was passed) that one of them got life..meaning life...the other minimum of 45 years.

lees partner was interviewed this morning, saying she didn't want them to die..to make them martyrs..she was happy with the outcome. Poor lass was serving in Afghanistan herself at the time.

Now we just need to make our prisons tough like some of those south American prisons. It's good they got the sentences they received though personally think they should have been executed (I know its not possible in the UK) but this was murder of the most horrific way possible and in public too. All those bystanders will always have Lee's murder in their minds unfortunately. RIP Lee :(

Naïve iam afraid ....they will be in a specialist wing with their own kind .....praying every day .....being fed every day ...nice and warm ......45 yr holiday

Totally agree, It's good to see a sentence that reflects the cowardly crime ( and that's a gross understatement ) I would have liked to see them hang, but after the 45 years, more so I would like to see them in a real prison, doing hard labour, getting battered by other inmates, hating every waking minute of there twisted scummy life's.

unfortunately the UK does not have a real prison to it's name. taking away someone's liberty after they have taken an innocent mans life is not enough for me.

I would burn them at the stake if I had my way.

Agree the sentance fits the crime.

Just my opinion but I would have liked a complete (self imposed) ban on media coverage of the trial these murderers have received far to much publicity.

What it does show by the very nature of the crime (as in it was pretty opportunistic, desperate and amateurish not exactly the twin towers) what a sterling job our security forces must be doing behind the scene if this is the sort of attacks the terrorists need to resort too.

In principle I could never condone the death penalty. For these delusional creatures a death penalty would probably have been more welcome both for the perceived martyrdom and the never ending publicity while going through death row and the inevitable appeals and processes. Better that they be out of the picture and disappear into obscurity with absolutely no parole ever.

Agree with what you say about the security services in general mate, but tbh,i think this murder was designed to be as barbaric and unsophisticated as possible

Bombings are horrific obviously, and sadly we've had more than enough, through different troubles in Northern Ireland etc, this murder to my mind was calculated to show just how easy it would be to carry out again and again, there's no bomb making materials needed that could be picked up on by the security services,no "cells" with traceable phone calls etc etc,all that was needed was weapons and two deluded fanatics who mistakenly thought Islam would condone the atrocity

Ive said it before, the likes of this "personal" murder strikes more fear into people than "impersonal" bombings,if you know what i mean,im just glad we haven't had people in the uk snatched off the street and put in front of a video camera and beheaded tbh, because if i was an extremist wanting to create a climate of fear, thats what i'd do,im just glad it hasn't happened yet, which hopefully means there isnt the amount of extremists here that some sources would have you believe

Fair point pabs but when all those battle hardened British born extremists return from Syria that amount may increase.

True mate,i guess it depends how many of them just have a gripe with Sunni or Shia,or whatever factions in the middle east, and how many have a gripe with the UK

I'm sure if the same thing happened in Aus Jen, that a similar sentence would be handed down. Don't think the courts here are any less harsh than the UK.

I can't imagine anything that could happen to those two that would be bad enough. Public daily floggings comes to mind, ring back the stocks. We all know it's not going to happen though and they will be looked after, probably in solitary, in jail. Getting their properly prepared food and just about anything else they ask for.

Death sentence would have made martyrs out of them so that wouldn't have been good either. Pity they can't just disappear on the way to prison and never be heard of again or something.

Yeah I know that... just wishing! Actually just wishing they could be perhaps spend a month or two in an army based detention centre.... er.... sure that something "nice" would happen to them.

I wouldn't count on it, there have been many crimes in this country lately with punishments / sentences that do not fit i.e Jill Meagher, Simon Gittany, Cowardly one punchers, murder is murder and life is life not 25 years. It may be in a modern jail but freedom is taken away and that is important to everyone.

Must admit that I have wondered of late if the judiciary are actually listening to the public and have any idea of how the public are getting peed off with the stupidly silly sentences that are being handed down for serious crime.

I agree with the sentence in the case of Lee Rigby's murders that they should spend ultimate life and 45 years in jail. I just hope that every day they are living in fear of their lives because of what the other inmates might do to them. I assume they might be in solitary confinement at times, but there is always the thought that one of those prison guards has a brother or sister in the military, and maybe a gate might be left "open" momentarily. I just pray that these feral arseshits are living in fear cos 45 years of fear will mean more than anything in my book. Long may they live in fear.
