I would say to anyone thinking Australia is a "better" life for their children, ask yourselves what it is that you think is better, lifestyle, careers. People have very successful and happy lives in the UK and being separated from family and growing up without that cannot be replaced and I wouldn't underestimate the effect it can have, I speak from experience.

Oh ok I didn't know that, can I say where its listed?

Depends on your definition of quiet, but there is always noise when you live near other people I think, be it dogs or children or parties etc. I think people could just be more considerate than they are, they don't seem to care how much noise they make in their house bounds.

Good luck to you! I go in and out of having anxiety but I think that is normal, I leave in 2 weeks ahhhhh!!!

Trying to get sponsored in Perth.. Anyone have any advice??
jen85 replied to Tinkers26's topic in Western Australia
Not to be rude but I think you may find it hard to get sponsored with those skills, your partner may have more luck but it is very dependant on where you wish to live and the work available and other tilers will tell you work is up and down. It may be best to work out how much money it would cost to live where you wish to go then work out what the work is like in that state / city. Cheaper than flying out here and ending up with no work which does happen to many! -
Hi all, I am moving to the UK in 2 weeks and need to sell my car, anyone interested or know anyone interested please let me know. Thanks

I wouldn't say avoid Sydney cause that's abit misguided, everyone just needs to be aware of their individual situation because not all states are the same and costs vary. When deciding where to live it is important to ascertain what money you would need to survive in that state / city.

I wouldn't count on it, there have been many crimes in this country lately with punishments / sentences that do not fit i.e Jill Meagher, Simon Gittany, Cowardly one punchers, murder is murder and life is life not 25 years. It may be in a modern jail but freedom is taken away and that is important to everyone.

I have heard this too from many banks, they won't lend unless you have been a resident for a minimum of 3 years. Doesn't matter how long you have been employed, that is what I have been told my multiple banks in the UK. I would rather rent and buy when I can personally, its not a big deal to wait abit.

I was glad to hear this morning that the UK courts have sentenced the killers of the Woolwich Soldier, Lee Rigby to life sentences (45 years). http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-26357007 Well done to the UK for handing down a sentence which reflects the crime, it does not bring him back but sets a precedence and hopefully the family can take something from it. Now Australia should follow and introduce harsher penalties.

There are good and bad aspects to both countries that cannot be denied, you just must accept them for wherever you decide to live and make the best of it. If your family is that important to you then the other sacrifices can be made at least you have a "worst case scenario" view at the moment so you are forewarned. Bear in mind the UK is on the up and the winter is at its worst for a short time of year. Maybe somewhere else in the UK would be a better fresh start.

I'd take the job every day of the week, you can always get citizenship if you really want to come back but you mentioned you wanted to settle down and be near family so maybe you need to decide what it really is that you want.

I have heard about the awful Perth traffic - advice please
jen85 replied to Sulac's topic in Western Australia
Traffic has increased over the past 5 years, that is fact. But depending on where you are coming from into the city it will be different. My bro in law has to drive in because of his job so not everyone can get on the train and can sometimes take him up to 1.5 hrs each way every day. All roads are busy now well the ones North anyway. -
You will never understand unless you have done it, my suggestion try to knock yourself out with sleeping tablets if you can.
-
None of that matters, it is where you feel most comfortable and are happiest!

Aussie who made the journey in reverse and back - desperately seeking advice

Do you catch the peak hour train out of the city?! I do every day and its like sardines in a can, everyone pushes in until there is no air left in the carriage. -
Parents. friends are making us doubt emigrating is the right choice
jen85 replied to Eddie10's topic in Aussie Chat
You need to decide what makes you "happy" because at the end of the day money, big house and cars won't replace relationships although many people try. If you have a good like in the UK I wouldn't move. -
Not anymore, WA is becoming more humid than it ever used to be! It was always dry heat and mostly is but there is certainly more humid days now. Totally unpleasant to do anything, as is the dry heat.

That's pretty much every city, its not unique to London. -
Thanks Cheswick! I love the cold weather nothing better than a nice crisp walk in the morning, best way to start your day!

Good for you, sounds like your content with your decision! I'm going next month with my mum (she's abit nervous cause she hasn't lived there in 30 years), I think it will just take abit of time to adjust.

Sounds like you have pretty much already made the decision, you said you don't want to be in Sydney so I would just leave! There's not point in staying somewhere you are unhappy as it will affect your whole life. People buy homes in the UK so I wouldn't worry about that too much, depending on what you do for a living as long as you earn enough to be happy then it doesn't matter, everyone is so obsessed with having a big house, lots of "stuff" and holidays every 3 months these days especially in Sydney, I know I lived there for 4 years in two separate stints. Just go with your gut and good luck! I'm an aussie like you too and hanging to board the plane next month -
Sorry you had to have such a horrible experience, but unfortunately its a city and an ugly side of it but all cities are the same. Melbourne is no different to idiots roaming the streets in Sydney or New York or London I'm sure.

You have to visit first because everyone will just give you THEIR opinion, facts are yes kids start fires but you will find that in other states too, there are times when Perth is dead quiet at night yes all these things you must accept. Living somewhere is completely different from holidaying so don't come with the rose tinted glasses and look at everything logically. Good luck!
