  1. I think the UK open to all border policy is digging a great big hole that no amount of cost cutting is going to fill. That's a bubble in the making right there along with house prices blowing the average wage out of the water. For me ( and I'm just Mr average don't know jack ) I think I will be more trusting of the Australian bubble bouncing along a lot longer than the UK one. End of the day, would rather sleep on the beach than under a bridge! Don't think the wife and kids would be too happy but I'm easy to please.
  2. Thanks Andre I grew up in Battersea then moved out to Carshalton. your 8 weeks in Melbourne!!! great stuff, hope it is going well for you, As for your kind offer of advise or questions!! Thanks loads Kev
  3. Thank you Perthbound2013 Got to be my favourite thread ever, Just positive after positive so thanks to all of you really! I arrive in Melbourne for good on July 19th, family will arrive August 6th, Very nervous but excited at the same time. I have never lived outside of the UK before so is an adventure but what I would add to sum up what I love about Oz!! ITS NOT LONDON!!!! And that will do for me, the rest is what you put into it and what you make of it. Fingers crossed. Good luck all Kev
  4. Totally agree, It's good to see a sentence that reflects the cowardly crime ( and that's a gross understatement ) I would have liked to see them hang, but after the 45 years, more so I would like to see them in a real prison, doing hard labour, getting battered by other inmates, hating every waking minute of there twisted scummy life's. unfortunately the UK does not have a real prison to it's name. taking away someone's liberty after they have taken an innocent mans life is not enough for me. I would burn them at the stake if I had my way.
  5. Hummm, I've heard Canada's nice this time of year,,,Wifey,,,WIFEY,,,come here, I want a quick chat,,,now,, you know you said you want to live in Australia.......
  6. I never looked into the opening times, thankfully you did, I am about a month away from transferring funds so in that time I will also look at opening an account at one of the banks you mentioned. Thanks mate.
  7. From what I have found there are plenty of banks that offer the service but I would not transfer money from a uk account direct to Oz bank, NAB even told me you get a better rate going through an exchange firm like moneycorp or global finance, There are plenty out there but as I am doing keep your options open and keep in touch with a few to see who offers the best rate on the day of transfer. NAB said they could not tell me the rate I would get from them on a transfer until I had done it, any other opinions welcome on the subject! Kev

  19. Hello all Qualified Plumber/heating engineer here but know it is a hard game to get into from the off upon arrival ( due there in may) I also have been doing a lot of Kitchen and bathroom fits for the past few years and noticed Kitchen fitter jobs are under the cabinet maker and carpentry category. Im just wondering if it is pretty much the same in Victoria as it is here in the UK as far as Kitchen assembly? This is where I might sound a bit daft but is it the same as in flat packed for assembly or like Howdens ready assembled units and such or are they all bespoke built on site and that's where the carpentry skills come into it? Like I said might be a silly question but I got a habit of asking them anyway so not going to break the trend. Thanks for any replies! Kev

  21. Ps, like duly posted on your post!!! Im not so reserved, I like everyone, Im just a like button slave, but in saying that I truly think that everyone that takes the time to contribute to this very VERY helpful forum in the first place cant be that bad anyway. Even more so those of you that used this forum to help them with a move, got the job done, completed the move and STILL take the time to help others rather than disappear. I hope by the time I am over there and settled I still find the time to do likewise, Hats off to you all :wubclub:
  22. G g s. You reserve your likes,,,I have had a like from you,,,that makes me feel good, so guess what!!! I like you
  23. Hello Snifter It does make sense for me to get plenty of quotes but to be honest every quote I get cost's me money for the time off work ( self employed and choc full of work ) so I have just gone on reviews of many shipping companies and narrowed it down to a few, but I do agree the more the merrier!! Just wanted to flag up something you said that is a very important factor, that is the shipping time, On average you are looking at a 3 month period for shipping as you said so to be waiting on beds and FF and such would be a bit uncomfortable to say the least, I had ment to mention that in my post but with my limited attention span it escaped me, happens all the time All the same it is a very good point raised, for me that makes taking essential things as in beds and the things you need everyday a no go, buy new in oz and sleep well from day two and also keep the milk cold! The money saved on shipping would go a fair way to helping out with it, Also, moving to the other side of the world for a new life and all that involves!! Might as well treat yourself if you can!!! Best of luck!! Kev
  24. Hello all Im in the same boat, had the removal guy round the other day and what I ask him to do was make my list, All the things I knew we are defiantly taking put down on list A All the sentimental things and TV's and such. Then as we went from room to room we also made a B list for the maybe's! So when I got my quote from him I had one that was a cert and another that was the one we would have to weigh up the cost against value to us. A list quote was £1,650 and A and B list together was £3,050, now once I looked again at the B list I had a figure to put on it and was easier to make a choice. I also looked up how much it would be to replace things on the B list in Oz and to be fair it was not that bad and it would all be new again. I also put an extra box worth on the fellas guess when we went room to room just incase we take more than he estimated, would rather over estimate than under and they only charge for what they take anyway. Have another company coming to quote on Wednesday so will decide between the two after that. All the best Kev
