Hi,

I'm a secondary science teacher - Biology specialist. I just submitted my 189 application and am about to upload all my documents...but am unsure about form 80!

Did anyone on this thread get requested for a form 80? It looks like a lot of grief to fill out so hoping I can get away without completing it. But also don't want to delay my visa being granted. Advice please!

Hi Rachel, did you have to submit a for 80. Just trying to decide whether I should fill one in and upload it on the off chance?

Nicky

Hi nickystar, you need the form 80 I'm afraid as its an integral part of the 189. It is a pain to do but needed. Feels like you have already filled the same info in but you do need to complete it.

Hi,

I posted on here a little while ago about having a 3 year BEd degree and understand that you need 4 years in education. So I have researched completing a top up PGCE but I can't find a local uni running the course. Plan B is to do a d distance learning masters in education (2 years). Will this be recognised in australia?

Hi I am extremely frustrated! I have a 3 year BA degree in early years education and then my teacher training was through the graduate teacher programme GTP. I always knew when I come to Australia that they wouldn't recognise GTP and that there would be something I would have to do out here but very disappointed to hear from a uni in Sydney that after looking at my degree subjects I would have to do another 8 units and then a 2 year B of ed in primary. Makes me so mad as I have worked so hard to become a primary school teacher in the UK and worked for a few years teaching with an excellent reference. To have come from a country with a very good education system, it doesn't make sense. I have been in Sydney for over a year and currently work as an early childhood teacher in a senior preschool room but miss being in the classroom and feel my studies have gone to waste.

Has as anyone else been in this situation? I can accept an additional years study and wondering if the uni has made a mistake. I will contact the institute of teaching as well to check with them.

NSW has the strictest criteria for teaching than any other state.

However, do remember that you did your studies in another country and so cannot and should not compare.

If you wish to teach Primary (you say that you are early years trained only), then yes you will need to do further study to fulfill the units required by the NSW Teaching Registration Board.

The one year graduate diploma of teaching is being phased out country wide and so I am not surprised at all that they have said you will need to do a graduate 2 year Bachelor of Education. The move now is to a two year Master of Teaching for all non education graduates.

One option for you is to move states. For example, in WA you would be able to do the one year diploma still and be qualified to teach. This would not transfer to NSW though.

Obviously the actual content of your degree is the issue here. You have not studied the specific units that are needed and required to be able to register as a primary teacher in NSW.

Hi @Kooky

Good luck for your new life in Oz!

May I ask what your partner teaches and what they did to get registration so quickly? I'd previously read that it can take about 8 weeks from entering Australia to get registration due to having to get First Aid, child protection training etc. booked and passed, but if I can do anything to prepare in the UK before I leave to speed things up that would be great. I'm expecting my visa grant any day now and hopefully moving to Adelaide in October. I'm anxious to get registration asap so that I can start looking for jobs ready for the new school year. I'm currently a Head of Science in a secondary school and can teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics so if he/she has any advice I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks!

I front loaded it with the rest of my documents. So I don't know if they would have asked for it. It is a bit of a pain, but it will delay your application if you get asked for it and have to do it at a later stage. Good luck.

Have you looked into the Open University courses? If I remember correctly they offer a sort of mini masters course, you accrue some masters credit which may be enough to top up you BEd. If in doubt if they will accept it contact the AISTL directly, they are quite good at responding to queries.

hiya ya good luck with getting your grant. We both started the process of teacher registration from the uk then booked the training for as soon as he arrived. As it was coming up to summer (uk) holidays once he had completed the CP and First aid training he went to see them and explained it would be tricky to get references over the summer so the guy literally put his application through there and then (record of 17minutes!). He then literally got work as soon as he got his registration so I arrived Monday and he was working Tuesday! Good luck with it all ;-)

i think you need the pgce. To the best of my knowledge it is the only way you will get recognised as a teacher.

Hi, Just wondered if you completed form 80 to get your 189 grant? Have front loaded everything else, but prior to teaching I was a freelancer and so had may clients over the years and so unless I can just put that time down as one period of self employed work it would be onerous to fill it out.

I'm currently at the planning stage trying to work out if I would be able to make the move to WA. My degree in Primary Education is not recognised as it was the 3 year so I'm currently looking to do a postgraduate 1 year course most likely in special education. However due to the changes in education over there (Year 7 moving to secondary) and the amount of teachers it's looking less likely that I will ever get a teaching job at this rate. Feeling deflated ?.

Hi Milliem

We are planning on moving to Queensland (sunshine coast) early next year. I teach science/ chem/ bio but happy to teach maths too. Do you have any advice about finding work in Queensland? I am starting to stress out a little as there doesnt seem much. I would be happy doing supply to start but would take what ever is going. I apparently can only do the teacher application with the department once we are there. Was really hoping to have work lined up ahead of time.

:wacko:Hi

Just wondering if anyone else finds addressing selection criteria in job applications daunting? Just had a look at one job description & there was a full page of selection criteria that they wanted responses to! Does anyone have any advice and successful experience with this? So far in my career I have not been required to do this in a job application.

Selection criteria applies in every state and each is different.

For my present position I sent in five pages of selection criteria, plus a four page CV and a one page covering letter. Pretty standard for education.

You also need to modify and change as time goes on, you can't just keep sending the same application in of course.

In WA government positions demand that the selection criteria is addressed against the National Professional Standards for Teachers. So my advice there is to go on the website and familiarise yourself with the standards.

Hi guys,

I'm moving to WA in 4 weeks and need to get registered with TRBWA and wondered if anyone can help me with the process please? Do I need to I need to apply via the 'Request for Qualification Advice' form because I was thinking that my AITSL pass certificate would have been enough. It seems daft that I have to be assessed all over again!

Any help is greatly appreciated!
