Counting Stars
Finally have a "day off" although have work and revision to do. I spent a day with the Enhanced Recovery nurse yesterday was really interesting. Helped with my assignment too as choosing Enhanced recovery as my pathway for the assignment. How is everyone doing? xx

Guest51810
I don't know if it's any use to anybody but the nhs seem to have loads of jobs right now, it's as if they are doing a recruitment drive. Mostly all in England I think but there seems to be nursing assistant, therapy assistant etc type jobs so might be useful for anybody who's doing a part time course on this thread. I didn't check the hours but just thought I'd mention it
Guest51810
Something like this kind of thing might be useful to someone if they do other locations http://www.indeed.co.uk/m/viewjob?jk=ef59b9deeae5163c&from=serp Would of been useful to me if it was Scotland although I don't know if my basic maths they mean a maths standard grade/gcse
kyliedonut
The nhs fife bank is open at the moment, taking on nursing auxiliaries...they do it several times a year. Suppose other boards are the same. Good pennies if u get a shift over the weekend. I try to do one every couple of weeks!

Yeah my friend makes quite good money at the weekend, Double time I think. She's a nurse though, she was going to do her fourth year, is it called honours? But she's on a break for a year for a reasons and just doing some bank work
Guest51810
I just saw a job for a nursing assistant in London and it says they perform ECG's and take blood. I don't get it.. If nursing students don't get to do it why do nursing assistants?
kyliedonut
Some nursing students are taught to do bloods before they qualify. Support workers and some nursing assistants, band 3 usually, are taught phlebotomy as well as ecg, ultrasounds, etc
kyliedonut
It took them nearly 10months to get me started, the HR is so slow where I am! Good to do something in nhs before starting a course. Definitely give u a head start!
Counting Stars
We do ECGS. We don't do bloods because we get told we have enough to learn lol x
Tappers2oz
As a HCA I could do ecg's but not take blood. Some hca's could do both. Largely depends on the trust they work for.
HappyHeart
Pretty sure bloods were extended practice when I trained...might have had an education session on the theory though?? Its up to the student what they learn on placement though..if a Junior Dr is trying to cannulate, observe then ask your mentor if you can have a go too...bloods also...you have to be pushy, grab your chances. I did loads of ecg's as a student and a newly qual but never had a clue how to read them...too many bloody wires..what a faff...hated it... Guest51810
I checked the advert again and it said about a NVQ so that'll explain why they were allowed to do that.. Oops. I saw a few therapy assistant jobs in England on the website too. Seem to be hiring a lot of people at the moment
Guest51810
Are the interviews for HCA really hard? They have to do assessments first don't they? Think I remember Stacy mentioning that
kyliedonut
The only questions I got were "what would you do if you came across a patient that wasn't breathing?" And "what would you say to a relative that phoned asking about a patient?" The rest they just asked where I had been on placment and what I enjoyed. Was very relaxed actually. Suppose each board will be different though. An obvious interest in healthcare is going to be your biggest asset
Guest51810
Yeah I guess people would have a really good chance of getting in if they are already on the nursing course
Guest51810
Oooh I just found a modern apprenticeship for health care worker in Glasgow. I'm going to ring up about it first thing on Monday. I saw them last year but they wanted standard grades at 1 or 2 and maths as well but this one just says four standard grades and English has to be level 1. Then there's a phone number if you need a chat about it so I'll ring them and double check about the maths etc
kyliedonut
I've heard of hca getting into college hnc nursing course while still working half the week. Hence still getting paid. They can then get into the 2nd year of the degree. Not sure if its the same thing but they do it in Dundee.
Guest51810
I've managed to organise another day at the OT department again.
