Hi

I also wrote my own reference as my boss also 'funny'and told her I wanted it to attach to my Cv as I wanted to apply for a job in a nursing home at weekends. She also signed with out reading it and this way you put in all the necessary bits that are needed.

Good luck

hi all im looking for some advice please tho it will probably be more opinions id imagine im having to decide whether to adult general or mental health at uni, i was at my open day for adult yesterday and im going to the mental health one next week, i just wondered if any mental health nurses could tell me whats involved in the 3 year course ie placements etc, im really torn as i have interest in oncology, infectious diseases but also in drug and alcohol misuse so i have no idea which path to take? i was swayed to adult general as i thought i would have a wider training and maybe easier to get a job in oz i dont know? any advice comments would be great plz :wubclub:

Hiya,

As i posted before I am in my final year at Uni and for me it was always going to be Mental health.

My first year was spread out with four placements, two in mental health (both organic brain disease) one in learning disabilities at a day centre and the last one was an adult branch placement in a nursing home.

My second year was two placements in the community both being parth of the multi disciplinary team as a student cpn (loved this!)

My third year is again two placements, We were given a list of placements and told to choose three. The first placemetn is specialised and I am on an adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit and waiting to hear where my final placement is....which is the management placement..

With my University, at the end of the common foundation programme (year one) people were given the opportunity to swap branches - a few came over to mental health.

Hope this helps..

Hi there

Here's a question! If your registration has expired in the UK can you do a return to practice course in Oz or do you need to do this in the UK before you emigrate?

Hi All,

I'm new to the site and have been reading though some of your threads on here and have found some useful info!!

I'm a Learning Disability Nurse working with school age children in the community and in schools. I qualified September 2007 so am fiarly new to the nursing profession.

My family and I are hoping to move to Oz but are finding it difficult to find nursing jobs with people who have a learning disability. Any one got any suggestions? or are you an LD nurse who has gone to Oz? Any advice would be gratefully received!!!!

I have been advised to register with the nursing board of victoria first and then apply for a skills assessment with the ANMC unless i get sponsorship (which is looking unlikely at the mo). Can I just keep renewing my registration with NBV each year without actually practising there (just in case the visa's take a long time!) or is there a time limit on them? i.e. have to go over and practice within so many years?

Thanks guys and hope to be chatting and sharing experiences with you along the way!!!

Hi everyone, Im a staff nurse in ninewells hospital, dundee in Scotland. I've got my nursing registration with the QNC, due to start in orthopaedics in PAH, Wooloongabba on 3rd Nov this year. All is going well apart from struggling to sell our house. Wish we had done it last year. Anyone else work in PAH? Would like to hear from you. Any advice on areas near the hospital to live?

Cheers

Hi Caroline, thanx for your reply. i was at my mental health info day yesterday but im still just as confused to be honest. uni says we can change at the end of first year but they really try to push to decide long b4 that! im really interested in forensic mental health but i think thats the only thing i would want to work in so i put this to a nurse yesterday and her reply was to say i need to remember im doing this training for 3 years and thats a long time if i dont like it! so i need to pick which one will keep me most interested? also ive read on a couple of occassions that nurses in oz arent given the same responsibilities as they are here so i would worry i would train for forensics to maybe not get work in that area and have to do some other mental health work im not really interested in?? im starting to ramble now but im trying to make a massive decision which will really shape my career on not very much info!! thanx again caroline x

Kelly, there are forensic units here in Oz - Greylands Hospital in Perth for example has the Frankland unit. You may only get one placement in forensic mental health during your training. When you come to Oz you may have to take a job in another area e.g. acute or rehab services whilst you apply for other posts. I was a CMHN in UK, but worked on an acute/HDU unit for 6 months as there were no community jobs at the time I moved.

I've really enjoyed reading where everyone is up to regarding being in Oz or trying to get there. I'm currently waiting for my registration to arrive, the house is on the market although we couldn't of picked a worse time to try and sell the house. I have a job already at Logan Hospital which is outside Brisbane and i'm speaking to my new ward manager on a regular basis. Can't wait to leave the NHS as i would never of done my training if i knew the real truth about nursing in Britain. Looking forward to hear how those who are already in Oz are finding work and the what the differences are.

Good luck everyone Sarah

Hi Everyone,

I have been in the process gathering all the information before i lodge my 47es form next month, we just have our medicals to do (on Thursday) and waiting for the Police checks to come back and then i will send it all off, however, i don't seem to be able to get my head around the English Language requirements, My OH is born English and i am from the Philippines but my English is good, Does anyone know if i need to do a test or will a letter from my employer suffice it has been noted in my reference that my English is very good?

Anyhow, its nice to see so many Nurses on here also, i am hoping to be in POW Hospital soon in NSW.

Hiya - I googled mental health hopsitals in Western Australia, had an idea where I wanted to live and didn't want a long commute to work. I then contacted the hospitals and attached my CV, got an interview and job offer before my visa was granted.

Hey :v_SPIN:

Im constantly searching for info on getting into oz and came across you folks, managed to read about 17 pages on this thread and ran out of time :goofy:

Im about to embark on a new phase in my life. I start my Childrens Nursing Dip in September and by the time ive finished i will be 45.

So from what ive read so far due to my age I will be best off going for the 457 visa? and because I will be a graduate can I look at hospitals taking on grads? or will i have to gain a certain amount of experience and go down the 457 route?

My mum has lived in oz for 25 years and is an oz citizen but i dont think this makes much difference to me as I will be over 45 anyway...(cant apply before im qualified can I so under 45???) just a thought.

Mum lives in Melbourne area, I emigrated with them when i was 17 but only lasted a year, ive been back to visit about 8 times, started with no kids now i've got three!! :arghh:

(19,10,3).

I would like to go to Melbourne but OH prefers Brisbane. He wants the more consistent weather and Melbournes weather is a bit hit and miss..but at the end of the day would have to go where (and if) i could get a good job. (oh and the state with the least spiders would be of great benefit to myself ) I can dream!! i am day dreamer after all.

bye for now
