  1. It all worked out well for you Joji and sometimes, that is all we can hope for................the end result. As you say, sometimes it seems that staffing levels are ok and it is the beds that they are short of, but that's just a "managerial blind". The "short of beds" statement doesn't mean that all beds are fully occupied, it means that they aren't staffed. "Short of beds" invariably means "short of staff" It's not an "OZ thing" it's one of the reasons we emigrated as my wife was a nurse and hated the use of the words, "short of beds". It's been an excuse for a long time in both countries for the inability to staff beds due to managerial decisions.....................notice I didn't say "cuts". Yes the budgets may be cut, but "short of beds" comes down to individual management of hospital resources and doesn't necessarily mean that the budget won't stretch to beds being opened up (more staff). It can be due, and in many cases is, due to managers allocating funds inappropriately eg allocating funds to the building of a staff/visitor cafeteria when the very same funds could have opened up 6 more beds for the year...........priorities.....we're all different, as are our priorities.
  2. This time you are, Bunbury is "sound" 'nuff said
  3. WARNING! Tangenital discourse Never mind pre 90's although I am well acquainted. Pre 64 I can talk of as dire.............May have been different darn sarf but I can tell you for sure, no matter what "statistic averages" may say, but as a child, I remember all too clearly battling through huge drifts to get to (forced into going) school every winter. Just before Easter seemed to be the worse strangely enough? OK, we were littlies and drifts may seem big, but my whole childhood memories are filled with the annual winter event of trying to drink frozen school milk and staying away from buildings due to the likelihood of falling icicles. Anyone remember Milady toffee? Made by Waller and Hartley the factory was on our way to school. Tankers that pumped in Glucose used to have their hoses freeze to the factory inlets and a tribe of turbaned lady employees (older folk will visualise the turbans) used to come out and pour kettles of boiling water onto the couplings so that the tanker could drive off. Xmas break 63 and "us oicks" threw all the gowned prefects of Blackpool Grammar School, that we could lay our hands on, into the frozen ponds that abutted our playing fields. Due to the likelihood of retribution on return, I didn't, and joined up in May aged 15........those fields, with frozen earth, that racked at our limbs when forced to play Rugby Union............Us oicks forced to play in our school uniform because our parents couldn't afford rugby strip which made it all the worse for the earache we got on returning home with sorely afforded ripped uniform covered in mud..................Jerusalem" my arse! British winters were dire, at least for working class kids who'd passed the 11 plus pre 64 and class does enter into your perception of winter for those who think the tangent of discussion is too obtuse. Last Night at the Proms always conjures up those memories and my hatred for the privileged class...............British winters have a lot to answer for in relation to those not sitting comfortably at home with "pipe and slippers" IYKWIM? Weather, no matter where you may be, as any serviceman will tell you, is designed merely to foil all battle plans and is designed (by the Gods) purely to test man's fortitude
  4. They're sealed to prevent ingress from mould/damp due to the climate. Prevents the likelihood of shock from touching a damp one. That's the main reason that it's illegal to change them because once changed, they wouldn't be damp proofed
  5. Pray tell when any returnee ever holds themselves accountable? It's always Australia/Aussies to blame. No doubt some have bad experiences, but I've yet to hear any of them question why?. Someone going on about dry heat and bushfires on another thread OK, I understand their dream is shattered, albeit taken 'em a long time to decide, but for feck's sake, didn't they research?.............and never mind that crap/excuse so oft recycled on PIO about research doesn't equate to actually living here..............of course it does, the research should show, if done properly, (eg a whinge on PIO) in past and future to another past/potential migrant, exactly what that returnee is whinging about, just as others have whinged similar in the past and those whinges should have been picked up....................it's all there...............on PomsinOz which ranks high in Google................so give me a break................folk who have lived here for 8 or more years and all of a sudden they're saying "I didn't expect this"...................some bugger whinging about "dry heat" and another about humidity........that's just a bail out for some other failure in their lives/expectancy. If you "didn't expect this" then that would have become apparent long before 8 years, or even 30 as some have whinged about. FFS how many millions around the world live in "dry heat" or humidity and yet just go on with their daily lives and live fruitful and satisfying existences? OK, you don't like either, which could be understood, but this constant emphasis/excuse by returnees that Oz should somehow have to apologise for it's climate is ludicrous. If you're bailing out, have the ball to say simply, "I miss family" or "I miss England's seasons", or "I miss Centreparcs" but puuuuuuuuuuuuurleeze, don't think that after all those years here, that you can blame it on "location" 'cause the truth of the matter is, if that really is the reason, then you're a feckwit for choosing that location and how come it's taken you so long to realise?
  6. I was particularly plssed off in 63 because all those bottles of orange that we used to nick off peoples doorsteps were frozen. The upside was that if you smashed them and brushed the glass off, they tasted exactly the same as frozen Jubbly...........hard to believe that less than 6 months later I was in uniform, and no, it wasn't borstal garb :-) I also remember a time when I was in the orphanage that all us kids were walking to school.............sort of..............and we lost one............just buried in a snowfall from a roof. The drifts were huge, and I mean shoulder high, and icicles hung from roof gutters to the ground. Shows what a bitch the matron was to send us off on our own in those conditions. I haven't googled it but I'm guessing it was between 1957-59..............perhaps it just seemed that bad 'cause we were littlies?

    Pom

    Beeg in favourites?
  8. If you post more details regarding your qualifications and work experience someone in a similar field may be able to help you. Why that area? Because it's a "cool" area for younger people? That may well be but it doesn't indicate that there will be viable employment, other than on a student or working visa. Post more details of yourself and others may be able to help.
  9. Working Holiday Visa and look for work when you get here. It's pretty rare that work is found prior to arrival unless you have a sponsor. Accommodation in NSW? where? It's a big state and could be hundreds of miles/hours away from the Gold Coast
  10. Johndoe

    Pom

I'll have what you're drinking or smoking :-)
  11. Not only will changing plugs yourself void any warranties or insurance should you get sparked, or have a fire, it is also illegal (if you are not a certified sparky) in Qld and I believe that could also apply to some other states https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au/injury-prevention-safety/electricity/homeowners-and-consumers/dontdiy Get adapters!!! So do not cut off plugs!
  12. I'm so happy that I am so memorable and remain in your thoughts. Easy to remember some people eh? Particularly when they don't have to re-invent themselves. Seems that I've mustered 4 likes from my previous response. Not too bad for a fool.
  13. Like I stated earlier, nothing but one liners with absolutely nothing helpful to contribute to the forum. The only thing that's "reality" is your inability to contribute to the forum in a helpful and insightful manner and what a sad existence you must lead to exhibit such bitterness.
  14. Agreed. Australia is such a small place lacking in diversity. If you've seen one beach/state/ rainforest/mountain/desert/ gorge/ city/ winery/mining town/indigenous settlement/tropical island etc etc etc you've seen 'em all blah blah
  15. My son lives in Salisbury. He bought his 3 up council house when he left the army (the council rented it to the Army. The family has outgrown it. He ain't short a few bob but after years of owning his own home, he has sold it and is renting until such time as he can find what he wants. He wants a doer upper because he says the new houses are like match boxes and a 3 bed average 350000 quid..............it isn't the price so much as the size. Even older houses although bigger the mortgage retentions on them are silly. He viewed one that had been re-wired 3 yrs ago and they still put a re-wiring retention on it. He'd rather move out to the sticks than buy what Barrats are throwing up. Their houses look wonderful online and in brochures but they're shot with a wide angle lens that adds depth to the rooms. Their plans don't even show dimensions of the rooms and the priority seems to be to just get you to view and then the hard sell whilst you're there. "You couldn't swing a cat in the bedrooms" was his opinion.

    State of the NHS

So please show, to support your argument, that "those people" pay sufficient taxes to support their use of the welfare state. Most of them are low earners and could never contribute enough to justify what benefits they receive from the welfare state
  17. "Move along"? Sums it up/your posting style eh? "Move along now, nothing to see here"........the (freudian) figure of authority and all knowing 23 yrs but that is rather irrelevant as to who gives a realistic impression of Oz, or indeed the UK or pommy migrants to OZ. We've had people on this forum who've slagged the UK off after only 3 months here and 2 years later been back in the UK slagging off Oz. We've had people here who have been here 30 yrs, slagged Oz off, moved back to the UK, slagged the UK off, and moved back to OZ. Those very same people are now, once again, slagging off Oz and moving back to the UK...............nothing worse than grumpy old farts be that Aussie or Pommy. I sincerely hope that the impression that I give, despite my support of (nearly) all things Australian, is that I would never, despite it's faults, deny the country of my birth or the kind of people that I was raised with and left behind. I hopefully, would give the impression that most fair minded Pommy migrants would give to this forum and not give the nasty impression that you, and others like you, give as to your place of birth and how OZ is somehow God's Country. Quiet simply, it ain't. It's hard yakka nowadays and unfortunately, older fools with no mortgage and established roots who think that they had it hard, have absolutely no idea how hard it is nowadays for new migrants.........so please.......................don't give me or potential migrants that platitude, "a bit of effort is all that is required" because it just shows how out of touch and how smug your comments are. I've answered your question, so please answer mine. "Why after all your years here, do you find a need to join this forum?" I haven't read much from you other than flippant one liners with very little that is constructive or helpful. So it seems you haven't come here to help, so why have you come? Merely to slag off potential migrants and bull up Oz? Anything REALLY constructive (and true) to say?
  18. Not been around much since you joined but you give me the impression that you are what the Oz detractors call a "plastic Pom" Someone who trumpets their "Ozzieness" whilst detracting from the merits of their home country...............a "traitor to their roots" if you will. Nevertheless, if you were born here, the following still applies anyway. In the short time that I have read your retorts, my opinion is that you don't do yourself any favours, neither do you do Australia or Australians any favours. Your "one liners" are enough to invite scepticism from those who wish to migrate here and invite the usual suspects to "up their game" as well as the tone of your posts being contrary to the Oz you purport to love in that they epitomise anything other than "fair go" Do us all, and yourself a favour and post in the realisation that it takes more than just "a bit of effort" and that "God's Country" is nothing but a tired and worn out cliche. Oz in it's present state, is anything but. I love Oz, but I don't find the need to post in a sardonic vein to get that across as you seem to do.
  19. It should be Stratford Upon Heaven ................but The Cuillins Isle of Skye Torridon Scotland Lake District...........in winter An extra.............Under the duvet/doona Blackpool :-)
  20. Yeah I guess you're both right. Everyone reacts differently. Strangely enough, my body must be in some kind of "reverse mode' because I do alright outside and then when I step into an air conditioned shopping mal or home, if the kids have turned it, on that's when I start to sweat. It settles down after a while but the first 15 minutes after stepping into air con, the sweat drips off me? I mentioned it to the GP because it only started to happen after I had the quad bypass but he had no answers
  21. @Goofy2018 Have you actually lived or are living in Brisbane? My towels dry out within the hour. My hair has never been damp for months on end. Aircon is mostly set at 24d. The only problem I have is my glasses steaming up when I step out of the air con car. I find that the humidity is quite tolerable for around 42 weeks of the year and the other 10 are nowhere near as bad as you are making out.
  22. It seems pretty clear that you don't read Marisa's posts properly. Her views are always well balanced with no bias either way.
  23. Not to my knowledge Shirt and tie maybe but not suits. I have quite a few acquaintances in Accountancy and IT and they only wear a suit in winter because of the colder temps, not because it's compulsory
  24. The tenant above has gone now and the house has sat empty for 3 weeks. It needed a complete paint job! This sweeping statement makes me laugh " The RAI deemed median rents higher than 30 per cent of a household’s income to be unaffordable." Shouldn't it be qualified as "median household's income"? or?...........if a household has a joint income of $1500 are they saying that if they use $500 for rent then that household find it unaffordable to live off the other $1000? What do folk expect out of life nowadays? OK, I've no mortgage but I manage to feed 3 of us and pay all the household bills out of $530 weekly AND I reckon I'm living fairly comfortable.
