  1. Good for you but if the Beatles and LFC is still your bag nowadays then .....................what can I say????????? Your quote, "Rawness"? Does that mean Boys from the Black Stuff" symbolises Liverpool culture? Crack a few skulls is "rawness"? Never been there but Melbourne for me (based on TV) is the cultural hub of Oz. Lots of good plays/comedy/art........................it ain't Liverpool, (except probably in it's crime history) but I've yet to meet anyone who hasn't enjoyed a trip there, or lived there.
  2. The OP's post is in the same vein as umpteen that have been posted on this forum over the years, as are the responses.................try another town/county/state blahdey blah. IMHO, if you are missing/pining for what you have left behind, be it in the UK or Oz, then looking for comfort in another country ain't gonna solve the problem, and to narrow it down, I don't think even comfort in another town/city can solve it. It may work for some, but despite towns/cities having different "vibes" my personal opinion is that the lure/missing of those "vibes" isn't so parochial as to be (supposedly) based on a town/city. Get to the root of the problem with a personal one on one discussion with "the disillusioned" and I have found that quite simply, it's about "fit"...............whether that disillusioned person feels that they fit in the community........returning to a community that you "baled out of" is not likely to endear you to (so called) friends that felt deserted by your departure so therefore you don't feel that you fit. Despite all the hugs and kisses when you departed, it is likely that some were jealous that you were "escaping" and also felt as if you had "dismissed" them from your life. They ain't the folks that you should be bothering with, or about. You braved what they wouldn't/couldn't so hold your head up. All the above is irrelevant, sadly for your own mental health if you are finding your situation such a problem, but the reality of it is, that the kids must come first. Grin and bear it for their sake. Try and "absorb" their new life.............try and revel in their happiness and try not to make it such a "big deal" in your own mind. Your post seems to place emphasis on the friends that you miss when really Friends, or friendships should not impose, or detract from, problems within someone else's family, they should add happiness to it. Folks have crashed in the Andes, been pushed to the limits of human spiritually and ethical endurance and survived the trauma. They've been lost in the sahara for weeks and survived,.............us mere mortals haven't endured such, just a change of country/culture but we have the same mental and physical capacity to overcome..................so.............quite simply.............why worry about whether you (personally) "fit" or not, miss your friends or not? Do what you feel needs to be done for the family to survive............that is if the family is your priority as opposed to yourself being the priority
  3. Likely wasting typing time here but: "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Those who don't consider it to be "your country" are welcome to continue "as is" but please bugger off as soon as means afford
  4. I have 3 sons back in the UK and have only been back 3 times in 15yrs. I have back problems and by the time the plane lands, it's buggered. I'm done with that now. If they want to see me they can come here. I won't do the trip again for a number of reasons and apart for the back issue, there is the fact that they have more disposable income than me to pay for the trip.
  5. Those that I've spoken to...............quite a few, and I quote, "I can't be arsed".....................they'd probably be the first to moan about the voters' choices.

  8. I think the majority have had trouble for years just finding grass................thank heavens for the recent rains
  9. I rarely wave unless they have had to slam their anchors on. The exception is my local shopping mal where the entrance/crossing to is immediately after a bend from the entrance. I know, as a driver, how frustrating it must be to just negotiate a bend only to see a crossing immediately confronting you and trolley toting pedestrians dithering. Once parked, and becoming a pedestrian myself, I always wave at those who stop for me......................iut's nice to be nice, even if folk piss you off and it sure does confuse 'em when they're shlte and you're nice back
  10. Meat prices through the roof............then again...........you get what you pay for. Their 3 kilo boxes of Crystal Bay prawns are the tastiest and cleanest I've ever tasted in a country that prides itself on seafood. Excellent meat and their mince must be the leanest in oz this side of 8 bucks a kilo and forget the whole cooked chooks at $7 when you can get 8 pieces of cooked maryland for the same price.....................but hey.............let's not forget it's a USA company not Aus.
  11. True................and it's something those rude, (as some poms have stated them to be), Aussies have taught me to say............and indeed, I really feel good about myself when I shout it as a when alighting from the centre of the bus..............try it..............it'll lift you up.
  12. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside due to the gelatin. My boys like lots of jelly so I make my pastry thicker than is normal to accommodate. I could bake longer to dry the pastry through but I prefer it soft inside. yes, I use lard but I seriously can't tell much difference on the odd occasion that I've used margerine. It involves cooking a large pork shoulder Kate so if you're prepared for that expense/time, let me know and I'll send recipe
  13. . . Got tired of searching for a decent pork pie so now I make my own and also make brawn. That's a large dinner plate btw.........Once started on it, it's hard to stop.........just add HP brown sauce to dip Traditional home baked English pork pie by Kevin Dickinson, on Flickr
  14. Regretfully, my understanding is that descent can only be claimed from parents, not grandparents. If you're looking for migration routes, may I suggest that google is your friend and the question you posed is easily answered via that route.
  15. I don't doubt it...............there are agents...............and then there are agents..................no doubt my accentuation will be lost in translation. As someone else said, hopefully Immi is monitoring and I'm pretty sure that if DAF monitor my sales of prickly pear on gumtree, (and I got a visit from them) Immi will be around here and the OP will get a visit, if not in person, then on any application

  18. Filled up for 1.19 at 7/11 today. Coles was 1.27
  19. And the best fish and chips. I could have guaranteed that you'd pipe in with those answers even though it's a dead cert bet that you haven't tasted either from all around the world. <yawn>
  20. I'm not a lover of chip shop bought chips and there's no way that I'll have deep fat fryer in my house. I recently tried Bird's Eye Golden Crunch Made with Tassie Potoatoes oven chips and they were the best chips I've had in 23 yrs. I don't like the other bird eye brands but these Tassie spud ones surprised me. Just 15 mins in the oven and nice an crunchy on the outside and fluffy spud inside. If you're expecting "greasy spoon" type pommy chips you won't be suited but if you can appreciate them for taste and texture, you'll be surprised.
  21. See it as a correction not a crash. Doom mongers on this forum have been predicting a crash for over 10 yrs and it hasn't eventuated. New builds, particularly units, are springing up all over Brisbane and I'd sooner put my faith in those dedicated building companies knowing where to sink their money than in doom mongers and 60 minutes. Housing markets are not immune to the capitalist cycle and just as the wise buy stock at the bottom of the cycle so should potential home buyers. See it as an opportunity to invest wisely.
  22. Shame that work location is not disclosed as that has a great impact on income. If you rent in a suburb for easy public transport access to work, and stick to the outer suburbs (cheaper rent) then it's doable if net, but not too good if, as you say, it's gross. Still doable but not too comfortable I would guess. Once you get your work location you will have a better idea of your outgoings 482 is only a temporary visa and you need to be sure if it's short term stream or media term stream as the short only allows you to stay for 2 yrs and the medium 4. I'm not sure what benefits you can claim with this visa
  23. Gross or net? As housing is the main expenditure an illustration of what you expect in this area may help us provide better answers. Mortgage? Rent? Deposit? Also, one or two cars? Suburb lived in and commute has a huge impact on income.
  24. Not necessarily. They could be 3 blockages in the same feed but if there were two blockages close together they can bridge them with one by-pass. I had a quad bypass but I had 5 blockages. Two of them were close together so they used one bypass to cover both. hereditary cholesterol problems the cause.
