Chardy
Ok, I'm getting tired of not being able to tell anyone at work or put anything on Facebook re our impending move. My manager is a great guy and I like to think we get on OK although we don't socialise other than at work related things. I'd like to be fair to the company and give them more chance to replace me but I only have to give 4 weeks notice and we don't plan to be off till September. So do I give him an earlier heads up or hang fire until the 4-6 weeks before ?? All opinions considered !

When the time comes to tell all enjoy the moment best of luck

Your boss may be a great guy but you could be putting him in a really difficult position by letting him know - at least if you tell him nothing he can plead ignorance! If he knows it may affect some tough decisions for him - esp in this economic climate. As they say knowledge is power!!!
LilMe1
I was thinking the exactly the same thing today ie may be I could tell my work sooner. Thanks for reminding me I need to hold my horses in this current work climate!
Goochie
Someone once told me that if your contract says you have to give 30 days notice and you give them 90 days (for example), your employer can make you leave after just 30! Basically you telling them that you're leaving counts as "giving notice" and your contract defines that as a 30 day period. That was from a HR manager at a highstreet name company. thewaltons
you have to write in your notice the date you will be leaving dont just put im giving 30 days notice
thewebweazel
I gave my Boss in S.Africa 2 months notice when I was only required to give 1 month, he was a great bloke as well, but he immediately cancelled my training courses and took it as a personal affront and made the remaining time there difficult. I,am i do not have to give notice self employed. But i have contacts/customers asking about contracts that will carry me into xmas of this year. I aint holding my flag up and saying mate i might not be here then! Iam costing the jobs up and seeing what the wind blows. If i go i would let the afore mentioned know. If house sells even with the contracts i dont see myself staying. But i have plan b in place and bills to pay if still here maybe selfish on my part but you got look after you and your own. If a employee told me they were leaving in two months. A/ i would be thinking little **** we have made him the man he is. B/ I hate him wish it was me (very jealous u going to pay big time) C/Two months yeh beauty iam going to make your life hell as you are leaving me in the shitte a man down. D/Go on my son you will not look back from this.I wish you the very best of luck in your new life you are a top bloke.(very unlikely) Soo see how the wind blows sit back then take joy when house sells & with wind in your sails give 30 days as i said only my opinion good luck. Quinkla
I told my organization (large, public sector) as soon as I was thinking of emigration and kept them in the picture throughout. It worked out well as when things started to go off course, people were willing to be flexible to help me. Ultimately I left in good standing and without being held to the full notice period when I had to skedaddle to take up a position in Australia quickly. I also didn't seek promotion, new posts or expensive training whilst I was looking to emigrate. It depends on the circumstances. It worked for me but might not work with a different set of people involved.
ali
I had to tell my manager pretty early regarding our plans as I was required to provide references for my skills assessment. I did explain that my visa could be denied but that I would give them the required notice once I knew for definate that we were going.
Ratchet
I gave my boss the heads up as soon as we started thinking about it. Kept her informed at every stage and gave as much notice as i could to allow her to replace me. Why would you be so cautious about telling your boss? I could understand your reservations if they are a tw@, but if not what have you got to lose. Its not a sackable offence to look elsewhere for work, esp on the otherside of the world. And a move to Aus isnt about them, its about you. I reakon you should say something
DeeTowers
Hi There, I was honest with my boss and gave him nearly 4 months notice! We got on really well and he was a great boss, plus my work was kind of niche so i wanted to help recruit my replacement and commmited to training them up. He was so pleased, not that i was leaving but because i gave him more than 4 weeks notice and did not leave him in the lurch... i always believe in karma and i know he will always give me a great reference and would take me back if i went back to the UK. My situ was different as we got on really well and my job was niche - I felt i had to help them. Good Luck!
