How nice to see a thread with no real bitterness and arguing, who's missing then

There are a few trouble makers missing, Earls, Bobby, Flip Flop, etc:biggrin:

returned home in March after 4 years in QLD.

Damned hard decision- love both countries equally, but for different reasons...

Was caught up in the floods in the Lockyer valley- kind of the the final straw for us, after another very lonely un-christmasy christmas, and hated the job I had.

Now I'm home, I'm loving seeing the family and friends, loving the decent gigs and restaurants and things to do and see, loving the better variety of food- and cheaper food! Loving my new job with 37 days paid holiday...

Hating the traffic, cost of petrol, the pessimism, THE WEATHER. I miss the lovely big house I had in Aus.

I'll be honest, I don't regret anything, but if offered a free ticket back, and if I could take my family with me, I would probably go back, but to Brisbane, and a different job.

My answer is in relation to what Ireland has rather than the Uk.

Life.

Ireland has a strong sense of cultural identity that walks easily beside us in todays modern world.Music, dance, art and literature play a very big part in Irish life and this is something I find lacking in Australia. It is here of course but is not such an integral part of life like it is back home. This leads to that elusive 'craic' that makes life in Ireland seem more alive in some way.

My friends here work, have kids etc...and then on the weekend they mow the lawn, have a bbq and go the beach,or maybe go away for a night or two and........go the beach and have a bbq somewhere else.......every weekend. For me that is like hitting the snooze button on life 40yrs too early. There is no excitement or spontaneity to their lives or ours, whereas in Ireland you never knew what the weekend would bring,a music session in the local or one at home 'til 2am after inviting aunty delia around for dinner for example. To hell with the lawn!!

I also think Ireland has more mixing of the generations, not just with those you know at a family 'do' but with people in general. For me it is totally normal to plonk myself beside an 80yr old at the bar and have a good yarn for the night.I feel this mixing of generations is very important and find it lacking in oz.

Irish people also tend to look out to the world for inspiration, opportunity and travel. The aussies I know are very insular in their thinking and have a not so healthy view of other nations.

Lastly,Irish people are very proud of their identity but feel no need to shout it from the rooftops. To be proud of being Irish does not mean we feel superior to others, does not mean we have a need to be the best in the world, does not mean we look down on other nations. It just means we are proud of who we are,we bring Ireland with us wherever we go knowing it will always be there for us if we choose to return. We usually don't brag about it or bag it.We are just glad we have it.

This comfort in our own skin is something I feel lacking in Australia too.

Thanks so much for this. Myself and my husband (with our two kids) are still here in Ireland and now that it's all looking like a reality for us, we are starting to have doubts! I was so sure that we were doing the right thing and now he keeps questioning whether it is or not - because of family, friends, familiar places. My argument is; I have all of those things now - family, friends etc and I'm not happy. What I am afraid of is the culture issue... The 'craic' is somehing that's inherent, it has no translation because you have to be Irish to understand the concept of it. What if people just don't 'get' us?

Well i am confused am planning on moving Australia soon and i have tried hard to think what i will miss about the uk. Maybe it because i live in Oldham manchester as pubs yeah are great but 1: cant get there cause have young children. 2 Have to have police in large amounts on the main streets of the centre cause of the trouble. My son got jumped last week of 12 lads for going to the park. Oh and it rains everyday!!!!! The snow yeah nice to look at but so hard to get to

work in it and not good when you fall on your bum !!!

You won't have any problems in Australia believe me - you have an open mind and as long as you realize you are going to a foreign country not a version of England in the Southern Hemisphere you will be fine!

I'd forgotten about the mayhem on a Sat or Fri night in EVERY high st in England! Thanks for reminding me about it!

I should stress that - Australia is NOT England. Don't even think of coming if all you want is a hot version of England.

I don't think that it's sad at all. As a mum of 3 young children I certainly missed the briliant variety and convenience of our supermarkets here in the UK. Why would that be sad.....

If you miss them then it is your right to post it, just post your honest thoughts and do not be put off just because people do not agree with them.

This is the second thread on this forum I have had to post a warning. please read Kates message and remember this forum is for members moving back to the UK,

I would like all members to note the title of this part of the forum - Moving Back to the UK.

Now recently I have had quite a lot of emails and pm's from new members who are wanting to return home but feel concerned about putting their thoughts in this area for fear of being jumped on.

It has resulted in some new members choosing not to participate any further. Now I am sorry but this is the last thing we want, people who are returning need our support more than anyone on this forum, they have uprooted their family for the initial move and are now very unhappy.

We find that people moving back will have opinions of Australia that you may not agree with, but please remember this is THEIR feelings.

If you are not happy with that then please use one of the other forums there are plenty to choose from.

If we see people using this forum just for arguments then we may look at restricting access.

This is the last warning I will issue, if members continue to post personal insults and posts deigned to antagonize other members, they they will find themselves with a few days off to study the rules.

You are in QLD? - You are supposed to hate NSW not the Vics? Isn't that all part of the Aussie-socialisation process?

Then again, in NORTH QLD you might hate Brisbane too?

Nah; spent 23 years in NSW but only 2 months in Vic...What does that tell you???

Cheers, Bobj.

Have just had my 1st visit to the dentist since returning to the UK.

Needed to have 1 extraction along with Scale and Polish and 2 x-rays to boot and was rather pleasantly surprised with the final bill.......................

A whole £28.00 !!!

So, although Australia does not lack dentists, the prices they charge are pretty scary compared to the UK - then again, I suppose it is all dependent on what treatment you require.

Hi Connie I'm finding the supermarket debate quite interesting. For me the Oz ones are far better and have a greater supply of fresh/real food. Over here I'm finding more pre cooked food and certainly a bigger choice of unhealthy pre packaged stuff. In the short time I've been here my diet isn't nearly as healthy as in Oz.

Guest Been there

Brits are wedded to supermarkets, it's in our genes. That's why so many poms misss the better food in oz, it isn't in supermarkets. Their loss.
