MikenSueNW3 Posted June 16, 2011 Share Posted June 16, 2011 Hi what docs did you need for the discount (proof)etc. cheers Mike.:wink: G'Day When we bought a car in Oz a few years ago (fed up with hiring for three/four-month [or longer] visits), we simply took a 'proof of NCB' notice from the insurer of our (2nd) UK car, which we sold shortly before. Got full NCB without quibble. We insured with AAMI, but have recently switched to Pay as You Drive (http://www.payasyoudrive.com.au) as that goes by the estimated no of kilometres a year you drive – you can 'buy' extra km or get credit for unused km the next year. This is better for us as the car is laid up for six–eight months each year, but we will reconsider if and when we settle in Oz. Unfortunately there's no avoiding a full 12-month 'rego' (road tax), as you can't get less in NSW. But it's still worth it for us compared with hire-car costs. We also got a no claims discount with no proof requested. As I said before, we used Coles and got a multi-insurance discount since we also used them for household. We also got fuel discount vouchers with our car insurance which was not to be sniffed at. 12c off a litre when used in conjunction with the check-out discount. Every little helps. Hi, We applied on June 1st 2010 for a 143 Visa, got a case office on May 10th 2011, had medicals done end of may, have just sent of police checks etc. Our son has had his interview and has been asked to open a bank acct for the bond. It is going much faster than we had anticipated but we plan to go next May so have some time to clear out our loft/garage of 33 years of living in the same house. Yes, it's difficult to get an idea of living costs, especially as we are currently staying with my daughter. Can't believe we have been here 2 weeks already. I had also forgotten how time consuming it is helping to look after a 2 month old baby. Need to go now as I am in charge and she is stirring. will be in touch soon re the meetup. brummiebabies Posted June 16, 2011 Share Posted June 16, 2011 My details arrived with the police for checking on the 17 th may....they tell me they posted it back on the 8 th of june....its still not arrived...its really doing my head in...im so stressed im ready to explode....my mum who is in sheltered housing and has my brother and his family within 2 mins drive away is breaking her heart...my sister who lives in Germany ...is saying she will be crying for weeks and her life will never be the same...we got told yesterday that our tenants are moving out...so do we re let ...or sell...I have spent the last 15 yrs caring for all our oldies...i want to be a grandma...nothing else...this whole process is so stressful...our flights are booked for 15 th august but my mum is telling me to go now...shes finding the build up too hard to deal with...im taking her to cornwall next week...then she wants me to leave...we have been back in th uk for to months...i have taken mum on two holidays already...the rest of my family...dont take her out...it is going to be hard for her..i cannot change the situation i find myself in...if i could just sneak off back to melbourne ...i would be off today ... Hello there. I wish I could magic something to make everything okay for you - if only it was that easy. It's a shame your sister and mum are making it harder for you. Of course it's natural they will miss you but it will become easier as time goes on. Change is inevitable; even if you stayed in the UK your life would be constantly changing as it does for us all. steveandaileen Posted June 16, 2011 Share Posted June 16, 2011 Just an update for all who rember us on this brilliant site, we gained so much information from posts on here, and if we didn't know an answer, it was soon given, we started with our application sent to Perth in august 2009 and acknowledged 2nd September, we were in the process and joined Sanch on gainwave, just brilliant to watch your progress, and we were prepared for the 15th month wait in the filing cabinet in Perth. Right on time we got our Case officer 2nd December 2010, now things really started to move !!! Police checks, Medicals, and Form 80, minor problem with some info we supplied, but a lovely lady CO in Perth gave us another 2 weeks, found best way was to email her everytime we sent anything to say it was on its way. Visa was granted after our mind blowing payment on 18/2 2011. House had been on market since the previous August, and we both got down in the dumps knowing we had Visa, but could not go until house sold. June 2011 and still no offers and getting really down, we make decision to rent, agent comes round and says she is sure she can sell, we give her 6 weeks and she sells it in 2 days !!!! we have done a lot of de-clutering, and have 1 or 2 more car boots to do, but we should now be in Busselton, south of Perth in August to join our Daughter, Son in Law, and grandsons 7 and 2. We are leaving 1 daughter and 2 grandsons behind, but hopefully they may be joining us within a couple of years. We are now so excited, with some apprehension, but we know we have made right decision, and are so looking forward to joining our family. Most insurance companies are happy to take your money but not happy to pay out. Your comment about car insurance also applies to medical insurance and pre-existing conditions. Buyer beware!! It's $14.79 from 1 July according to my calcs. This compares to a minimum wage in the UK of £6.08 from 1 Oct. Therefore the rate in Australia is 57% higher than here, so on the surface considerably more. But of course this is simply another peculiarity of the current exchange rate. Cheers Steve I contacted a friend of mine in OZ who works in admin in an age care home, she said the starting wage is $20 and as i have my NVQ3 in care and over 20yrs experience i would more than likely start on $23 and work my way up from there. Put my mind at rest as by the time i calculated rent, bills, fuel, food i would have been well skint. I won't be well off but it's manageable. We're going to consider something we read on previous posts about 'drip' feeding our money over to Oz. Question is do we open an account in our own name or ask our daughter to open up a savings account in her name? I've looked on the NAB site and although we can open an account ourselves and deposit monies, it seems we can only withdraw after a personal visit to a branch in Australia. We won't be going before we are (hopefully) granted our visas so this won't be of any use to pay the final big one!! Any thoughts? chudleighval Posted June 19, 2011 Share Posted June 19, 2011 Police check (copy) paid for and arrived...all docs now posted off...just waiting for aussie police checks to come back to our daughters....so we are almost there as far as getting a visa ...whatever happens we are booked on singapore airlines ...cattle class on the 15 th august...if we have our visa they have onfirmed we can have double luggage allowance...if we havent got our visa by then...it means we will have to have a few days in fiji...or bali...life can be tough....oh i meant to say to get our visa stamped... Yesterday we decided as our current tenants have decided to move out in around 6 weeks that we will put our house on the market and see how it goes...if there is no interest we will let it again...we have a cabin to liv in in oz...so no desperate rush...but a real home would be nice...i hope things are moving on for everyone else...it is so very stressful but i know it will all come together in the end and we will ...all live happily ever after... I believe there are only 600 a year being granted now so you may be lucky and get it before Christmas but maybe by this time next year! To us it seemed better to have our son able to control the money that was sent to Oz rather than have to visit the bank in Oz, not a lot of use having $75,000 in Oz if you can't access it. :wink: I'm really not too sure about this as we opened an account with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia when we were ther last Christmas. We have full internet banking facilities and have been depositing funds in a fixed term savings account since then. ... from six months upwards at rates randing from 5.8% to 6.1%. It might be thaat we have internet facilities only because we were in Oz when we opened the account, but it might be worth checking this out directly with the Bank. Linday Posted June 22, 2011 Share Posted June 22, 2011 The problem might arise when you come to actually pay the second VAC. Normally PVC require a bank draft. If you are able to transfer the money to your son's account then he can get a bank draft drawn on his account. The only other way would be for the draft to be drawn against your account. I have heard of someone whose bank would only issue the draft to them and it had to be sent to them in the UK, and then sent back again to PVC.
