VERYSTORMY
Migration to Oz is reducing fast now the boom times are over and WA and NT are being particularly hard hit. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-09-24/slowing-population-growth-presents-economic-challenge/6801862
starlight7
Not sure we would have come if it was like this at the time we emigrated. Very hard for people now, it is a shame. I think there is still work to be had, though, judging by the number of people coming into Victoria.

bristolman
It makes sense really. You will still get those who think Australia will miraculously change their lives but generally because the gap between the 2 countries has closed there will be less traffic from here to there. Que Sera Sera
So the Government issues X amount of Visas and have quotas, are these not being filled then? Are the ceilings not being reached? Or is this slow down been planned by reducing the number of visa applications processed?
bristolman
I would be very surprised if the Government is trying to slow down migration to be honest.

Que Sera Sera
I would be very surprised if the Government is trying to slow down migration to be honest. They've lowered the ceiling on all visa applications therefore reducing the numbers accepted. What else would you call it. Ask the people on here that have just had their 175 & 176 visas thrown back and not processed. Plus all the family visas ceased.

I think there is still work to be had, though, judging by the number of people coming into Victoria. I must say, I was surprised to notice the difference in the job market in the South of England compared to Sydney. Almost everywhere we've visited, from Exeter across the country to Tunbridge Wells, I'm seeing signs in shop windows advertising vacancies for shop assistants, hairdressers, chefs, bank tellers etc etc. Of course you see those posts in shop windows in Sydney too, but they are far far more frequent here. It suggests the job market is pretty lively.
janlo
Ha ha. You couldn't possibly be deciding not to come to Australia?! ..... We will say we are making it harder to get in.

That link isn't working. So yes they have actually fallen short rather than reduced the overall numbers.

bristolman
Yes I think Germany and other countries taking endless numbers of those fleeing Syria will have it bite them in the bum, it's why I agree with the UK stance on this. Not that this has anything to do with what is in that story, a 70,000 shortfall is certainly not a win win.
