Robert James
Hi everyone What are ur thoughts on lack of support for parents. We don't want benefits for them but at least give them 5 year visa with 1 year stay per visit. At the moment as per THE AGE article " The parent visa changes are even more extreme. The only option now for migrants wishing to bring their parents to Australia is the "contributory parent" visa – at a cost of $47,120, plus a bond of $10,000 to cover any welfare payments made over a 10-year period. The total is $105,905 to bring two parents to Australia." Looks like only rich can be with their family now.Is there a way to get long visa for parents without paying such a huge fee.may be we should approach government to provide realistic parent visa options for every migrant
Bungo
I think it is fair to say that the parent visa is only for the rich. Having said that, it is more than many countries will offer.
scattley
Many countries do not allow it full stop. Realistically, 50k per parent is not that much. Most new immigrants will pay that much for a car and get a loan for it. It is really telling when they put their need for a New car ahead of their parent being brought over...it tells you something about the relationship and their priorities. MaggieMay24
There are longer-term visitor visa options for parents of Australian PR (12 month stay in an 18 month period). Australia can only afford a limited number of migrants. They prioritise skilled migrants who are going to contribute to the tax base for a longer period before starting to draw benefits from the government. Parents will be less likely to work, so their contribution to the tax base will be much smaller while drawing benefits from the government. This is something migrants need to consider when deciding to move.
Que Sera Sera
How does you bringing your parents over benefit those of us paying taxes here ? Sounds tough but that's the crux of it. Edited May 6, 2015 by Que Sera, Sera
Quoll
The Australian government couldn't give a toss about the parents of migrants - and nor should they really. If you want to be with your parents you can always go and live in their place. I think $50k is very reasonable - that's going to be the least of their expenses all things considered. toOZ2012
Hi everyoneWhat are ur thoughts on lack of support for parents. We don't want benefits for them but at least give them 5 year visa with 1 year stay per visit. At the moment as per THE AGE article They can apply for the regular parent visa which costs like $2k+ and takes 13 to 30 years to process but the upside is they can also apply for a 3 to 5 year visit visa with 12 months stay in every 18 months. If your parents are eligible for the aged parent visa they can also try the onshore aged parent visa and stay here on a bridging visa while the visa takes forever to be processed. Also check the parent visa thread for more information: www.pomsinoz.com/forum/migration-issues/77756-brand-new-pio-parents-visa-thread.html Edited May 7, 2015 by toOZ2012

Indeed, very few countries actually have pathways for parents to be with their migrant children and long term tourist visas are really a good way to try out Australia before uprooting their whole lives. The question really is, why should Australia offer more 'support' for parents of migrants?
Freesia
Yes , I'm wondering what type of 'support' you mean really - & I'm one of the parents who's just coughed up $60k for my visa ( I'm not rich either- that's a huge assumption some people make ) The terms of the visa are well explained - there are no offers of Government support within them. On that basis it's obviously not for everyone, it is a big life-changing decision, and one you have to be prepared to make despite the financial risk if you're not able to work for instance. vava
The way we look at it, it boils down to the cost of a permenent visa verses the cost of going for a holiday every year till we can no longer cope with the journey. We have been visiting every Christmas for a few years. We rent a holiday flat, hire a car and generally enjoy ourselves for about 6 weeks. We spend in the region of £7k + including flights. Puts it into perspective eh? If we are very lucky we might get some part time work, we'll buy a smallish house and a car and best of all, we'll get to see our family in the flesh on a regular basis. Add that to the better weather and it's a no brainer! Also, if we were Australian and our kids migrated to the UK, there is no visa that would allow their parents to live here. Can someone expand on this? You can bridge for that length of time, leave the country etc?

vava
Hi Val Any luck with your house sale yet? Regards Steve Hi Steve, we changed agents 2 weeks ago, got another viewing this coming weekend. Wish we'd gone with this agent 2 years ago as they seem very pro-active in marketing their properties plus they only do sales. I think because the rental market is so bouyant, agents get caught up in that side of things as its easier money. We shall see what Saturday brings...........fingers crossed! Freesia
Can someone expand on this? You can bridge for that length of time, leave the country etc? The 804 is still open atm- I think you're generally expected to stay onshore despite the long wait- but would not be refused permission to return home to wind up financial affairs etc.
