Guest Ptp113
But surely everyone will understand that with the boats being stopped, there will be no more drownings, no so called mistreatment in detention centres.Really all those problems disappear if there are no more people arriving illegally by boat Who killed that poor man anyway ? I presume it was an Australian guard was it based on the mock outrage. Again, it isn't illegal to arrive by boat. What part of that don't you understand? Bibbs
The Guardian doesn't have a massive left wing bias at all. Ha ha ha ha .. the Guardian when combined with the BBC/ABC are massively left wing (for western nations). You don't see it though, as it's a match for your own political ideals. But you are becoming a minority. Hence why the Mail is one of the biggest selling papers (and one of the most popular news websites) and the Guardian is going bust. Parley
Again, it isn't illegal to arrive by boat. What part of that don't you understand? Yes it is we have been through this. The UN determines it is legal for an asylum seeker to seek refuge in the closest country to where they are which will provide safe haven. They are not allowed to cherry pick and travel half way around the world to Australia. The UN refers to illegal arrivals.

If you follow populist press your prerogative. Actually I read UK Daily Telegraph on line, UK Independent as well as foreign language, European press. Not my business if the flock want to be amused and titillated and fed Celeb low life culture over the real deal.

Only countries signatory to the UN Convention have a legally binding responsibility to care for refugees. The only degree of cherry picking is towards Europe or Australia, if looked at in those simplistic terms.

flag of convenience
How disrespectful..it's nothing to do about colour, as you are aware..what a racist, vile comment..if you had any empathy or understanding about what an asylum seeker goes you would not be so quick to make such sweeping racist statements. Sadly the issues brings the racists out of the wardrobe, thinking it gives them a degree of justification to their putrid views.
flag of convenience
By the way, the boats have far from stopped. Two more boats were reported towed back within the past week.
Parley
Must be 69 days now since a successful people smuggling operation. And yes they are essentially stopped.
flag of convenience
ha...i think not..that's what he wants you to believe...a vigil was held in Sydney last night for the terrible treatment of asylum seekers and the death of the guy in detention where 10,000 people turned up...great support. Such gatherings do give a degree of hope, that Australia has not entirely become the nation it sometimes appears to be.

flag of convenience
Read the first sentence carefully (particularly the word 'lawfully'). Perhaps you should not see what you want to see and stick with the facts. Try reading Articles 32 & 33 with regards to non refoulement. Australia is clearly in breach of a legal binding agreement updated in 67. I would say sending asylum seekers, that haven't had a chance to have their claims heard, to a secondary country, of some danger, namely PNG, a clear breach of law. As stated a million times it is not illegal to claim asylum. Australia, evidently may not wish folk washing up on their shore doing so, but it is not illegal. A very big difference. Nothing to be proud about, a nation breaking its own freely signed legal convention, as you and others infer.
Cadas
I think you need to read the articles objectively Article31 allows potential asylum seekers to come "directly from the country of persecution" so, sail or fly DIRECTLY from Iraq to Australia, claim asylum is lawful. Go via several other countries first is not. Article 32 regarding refoulement only applies to lawful entry, so break 31, 32 doesn't apply. Laws are laws, interpret as you wish but these are fairly unambiguous unless clouded by political bias Edited February 25, 2014 by Cadas

You are of course correct and we have both stated this fact on numerous threads - but to no avail. I get disheartened that people still get swayed by the sensationalist media and vote hungry politicians, pandering to the not so nice side of human emotion - fear of the other.
