Sammy1
Wow, one minute it sounds positive as Maths & Science are in demand and that from next year primary year 7's are getting moved up to secondary so they will need more staff to this situation....We don't know what to do, this after shelling out 3.5k on applying for PR visa. WA education is undergoing a lot at the moment. None of us really know what the government will pull next. However, maths especially is always in demand, so your chances are good. Rosebud13
Is the issue that there aren't the jobs to apply for or is it that there are a good quantity of jobs but too many people going for them?
chrisnlinz
Hi Im new to this forum and wondered if anyone could answer a few questions I have about teaching qualifications? We are just in the process of starting our application process.I have a further education PGCE (14+) and a dance degree. My pgce placement was teaching at fe and he level. Since graduating 2 years ago I have been on supply in secondary education, mostly as general cover (dance teachers never seem to be off work!) mainly english, maths with some performing arts cover. Ive also had a couple of long term stints in PRU's. As well as this I work self employed as a dance artist/choreographer. I suppose the main thing im worried about is how easily I will find work seeing as my pgce is fe and my work experience has been secondary ed plus i have QTLS not QTS. Also will my pgce be recognised over there? We have our hearts set on Perth when and if we get out there. Hope someone can help
Dorset
Chrisnlinz, I would suggest you have a look at the AITSL website. http://www.aitsl.edu.au/assessment-for-migration

There FAQ aren't overly useful, but they are pretty good at responding to queries. They aren't bothered about QTS, their focus is on the PGCE. So it'll depend on how academic they deem it to be. Your teaching quals need to equate to 4yrs of higher education study, e.g. 3yr degree plus a 1yr university based PGCE.
Grace5
Hi I am new to this thread and was wondering if anyone has advice about Chemistry/Science teaching in the Melbourne area? I am have been granted PR and am the main visa applicant and main breadwinner... Thanks
chrisnlinz
Thanks Dorset and Rachel. Yes the AITSL faq's are quite vague, although this bit is a bit worrying - "The initial teacher education qualification must involve at least one year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) and be specific to the stage of schooling of the nominated occupation." Think ill have to contact them! How has everyone found the transition from teaching in the uk to teaching in oz? Are there many differences? chrisnlinz
It wouldnt be too difficult to get more respect than I do at the moment! Im in a PRU and a day where I dont get assaulted is a good one
wolvesaussie
Hi I am new to this thread and was wondering if anyone has advice about Chemistry/Science teaching in the Melbourne area? I am have been granted PR and am the main visa applicant and main breadwinner... Thanks Hi my girlfriend came out at as science teacher end of last uk school year. Landed a full time permanent job in a private school starting jan 2014. She is really enjoying it so far. She applied for aprox 100 jobs interviewed for about seven. There are not many straight science jobs most are maths science. I think this went against her when applying. Shes now teaching maths and science to year 7 to 10. From what we have learnt many of the 100 jobs probably had someone in post already so they would be unlikely to hire an outsider. Good luck u will enjoy it..not so much red tape better kids no ofstead more freedom in what u teach. These are things girlfriend likes. We had less pressure on us than you would I guess. I had already lined up a job from the UK so we already knew we had some money coming in. This enabled my girlfriend to do volenteer work in Schools from August until she got the job in November, working in two different schools one state one private. Just to get an idea of what australian teaching was about, she was just a free teaching assistant basically but I think it looked good at interview that she has been doing these things Edited May 16, 2014 by wolvesaussie
Ana Delgado
[h=2]Teacher from Spain with skilled visa[/h] Hello everyone! I'm a Primary teacher from Spain specialised in Music who has just got a Skilled Visa. My husband was the applicant which means that I didn't have to translate and send my qualification. Therefore my question is: Do I need to make my Teaching Degree equivalent in order to work in Primary or Nursery Schools in Australia and how do I do that? Do I need to provide reference letters or any sort of extra document necessary to teach in private schools in Australia? (concretely in Sidney as we are planning to live there). Is it necessary to past an specific English exams so as to become a teacher in Australia? Anyway, if you have any information related to teaching in private School in Australia I will highly appreciate it Thank you very much for you help. Shannerz
Hello all, really good to read about places to find jobs in oz, but could I please ask advice on when I should start looking for jobs as I havnt started the visa application process yet. I'm a fully qualified teacher and want to move to oz permanently. Guest Linda21
Are you going to do the IELTS for 20 points or you could apply for the 489 with State Sponsorship for 10 - just an idea if you haven't considered them.
Keefo
Think if you get teacher sponsorship you can only teach in some states if not all. This means if you struggle to find work as a Teacher or should ever lose your job then you couldn't work as anything else. With the PR visa's you can look for other types of work to bring money in. Robinson
Hi I need advice please. I am currently a Principal at an elementary school in Canada. I am a Canadian citizen but was born and studied in South Africa. (We immigrated to Canada 5 years ago, but it has been a nightmare - minus 52 degrees C is not fun if you come from Africa...) My family and I would like to immigrate to WA. The only way that I will have enough points is if I apply for State nomination. Can anyone tell me how long this process takes. I have not yet registered with the WA College of Teachers. Should I do that first? Will I be able to apply for State nomination without a job? If not, how difficult is it to get a job if I live in Canada? I am doing my IELTS in July, my previous one has expired. I do know that I do not need that for immigration, as I am a Canadian citizen, I will however need it to register as a teacher. We are keen to move to Bunbury (my son is one of Canada's top 10 swimmers in his age group, and I know they have an excellent swimming program) I would appreciate any suggestions. Kind regards,

I didn't have a choice. Need to work there in order to achieve full registration. I suppose it is like an NQT/induction kind of procedure. Good luck with everything!

Yes, I guess I am feeling the pressure at moment. It's always the same with advertised jobs, in UK too, often they are just going through the motions, when they already have someone lined up. It's frustrating though. Just got to keep looking and hoping, although I suspect I may need a back-up plan, just to earn some money until I secure something full-time/regular. I think you're right though, it will be worth it.
emwatson
Hi, I posted on here recently about applying to be a recognised primary teacher in Perth. I have a 3 year BEd degree in primary teaching and understand this isn't recognised. Although I've been teaching for 4 years across a range of year groups. What can I do to be recognised as a teacher in WA? Do I need to do a post grad diploma? A PGCE? I need help as I contacted relevant people with only automated responses. Please please can anyone help me? Kayleigh I Kayleigh, I did a 3 year BSc Teacher degree (after studying a different course for one year, which I found I did not like and dropped at the end of the year) but have also since done some masters units and gained a PGCert (not the same as a PGCE). This seemed to be enough for AITSL to award me a certificate. Hope this helps!
