What car to buy?

You have a Getz, say the falcon isn't a decent car yet you are looking at a hair dressers 4wd and a newish car out of china.

Hope you find your 'decent' car. And a little tip, if you want to try and look 'cool' in your 40's what made you think of buying a Getz in your 30???? Hmmmm

Bought the Getz as it was a cheap see me through when we arrived. To be honest notna bad car in some ways. Get almost 500km from a tank, has never once broken down and cruises "ok". But it was a "quick I need a car job". The fords are, I am sorry, ugly as sin. Particularly the falcon. Look like a hernia op mid way though that is going badly wrong.

Is there a rover in my budget? Haven't looked, just assumed not.

The Rav simply came in because i drive a Toyota at work and like it. It meets the requirements in being I need reliability.

1. Great Wall is a no no - look at other posts on PIO. Poor reliability, they are 'tinny' and have poor resale value.

2. Land Rovers - Lovely machines however high expense on the maintenance and repair.

3. Toyota Kluger and Kia Sorrento both have good specifications although they maybe a bit fuel heavy due to size and perhaps too big for one man, his small dog and shopping.

The new level Toyota Rav4 and Kia Sportage are worth a look.

Any chance of arranging a novated lease via work?

I had a friend who wanted a new car, but was not too well up on the technical specifications. He went to a car dealership, was drowned by a salesman giving him all the technical guff. He said "STOP...let me talk to the salesman who sells to women...". Another salesman came out.... "now sir.......what colour would you like..."..True story

Or this one

A lady walks into a BMW dealership. She browses around, spots the

Top-of-the-line Beemer and walks over to inspect it. As she bends over to feel

the fine leather upholstery, she inadvertently breaks Wind.

Very

embarrassed, she looks around nervously to see if anyone has noticed her little

accident and prays that a sales person doesn't pop up right now.

As she

turns around, her worst nightmare materializes in the form of a salesman

standing right behind her. Cool as a cucumber and displaying complete

professionalism, the salesman greets the lady With, "Good day, Madame. How may

we help you today?" Very uncomfortably, but hoping that the salesman may just

not have been there at the time of her accident, she asks, "Sir, what is the

price of this lovely vehicle?"

He answers, "Madam, if you farted just

touching it, you are going to **** yourself when I tell you the price."

by dismissing the Falcon out of hand you obviously know jack sh!t about motor vehicles and aren't really going to take anyone's advice on here at all seriously so buy whatever you want.....maybe an older Citroen for the reliability may suit you.

I've just picked up a top of the range Hyundai i40 tourer for under $50k with 7 years unlimited mileage warranty and 5 years breakdown recovery. You get all the toys you would get in an Audi or BMW at a fraction of the cost. Great looking car and total piece of mind with the warranty and breakdown. Worth a look.

that was my though exactly... they've only come out at the start of the year here in Belgium, and I must say I haven't had a look inside, but they do look like nice cars.... We we finally arrive I would think about the i40, it sure would be worth the extra $10-15k for 7yr warrenty and 5yr breakdown with a brand new car instead of a used car.... just my 2 cents

I was accually surprised no one else suggested the hyundai

Have a Getz now.

Falcon. I was looking for a decent car.

But in seriousness, have been thinking about a Rav4, a Great Wall or something. Trying to get away from the small car thing as feel I have earned a treat. But, I am finding them expensive here. I had thought about a range rover. But while possible in Europe for under $50k, isn't for some reason here.

G'day mate, re the Great Wall; suggest you look at the "chassis", they are spot welded sheet metal, not solid framed. Was looking at one but decided against one just on that point alone.

Rav4 have an excellent reputation.thumbs.gif

Cheers, Bobj.

Snap I am looking for a new car as well. No idea except it has to be a hatch back.

Hatch backs are my thing and they have to be red.

I am looking at some of the European cars which I like, however will probably go for tried and true, Toyota or Mazda. Love Mazda as they do the interiors so well.

I'm with you about Mazda. I love the Mazda 3. We very nearly bought a new one last year but decided to hold off as we are migrating this year. The Mazda 2 was a nippy little hatchback, although the 3 was a bit more solid and bigger, held the road better IMHO. But the 2 looks good. And I love it in the metallic bright green.

My friend bought a Mazda 2 recently and it has all the whistles and tweets and I do travel in it a bit and must say its a nifty little car if anyone is looking for one. Comes in lovely colours too.

I need a bigger car, as I have to look to carry a wheel chair plus a walker etc so Mazda 2 is not big enough, shame though.

Thanks guys. I hadn't thought about Hyundai. Even though I drive one and been fairly happy with it. Mazda is also a consideration.

Appreciate the feedback on the great wall.

Anyone had a jeep?

Jeep I would expect to be parts expensive so research that aspect perhaps? Used to drive one and a Cherokee from time to time and IMHO they are nothing special. Would drive both of those when the GC went in for a service. The GC was awful off road compared to the Defender and RR (converted). It was ok on motorways and ok as a road car but there are better 4WD's out there for your money. On the farm they went over to a Toyota Landcruiser IIRC for the daily drive so to speak. That was good. Helps having your own fuel pump on site though when you drive one of those gas guzzlers :cute:

If you want a bigger car have you looked at a Mazda 6? Or 3 if you want something a bit smaller?

If I had the cash I'd buy German and get a VW. Loved my VW. Currently have a Ford and its ok. Does what it says on the tin but I don't love it or really enjoy driving it. Means to an end car till we move over to Aus. I've never been a Ford fan. Mazda and Toyota both have good reliability. The new Hyundai seems to be gaining in popularity over here. See lots about. Perhaps because its a cheaper car than either of the others (and other makes).

Ok, I'll give you a bit of my personal opinion....I've been involved with "cars' since I was a young bloke and had a reasonable participation in motor sport as well as I got older. i have at one stage sold Mercedes Benz for a short period of time (with some success). I drive two motor vehicles at the moment (not at the same time)....my "fun" car is a 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo (993) and my everyday hack is a Lexus IS 350. I try and change my "hack" every two years or so. Prior to the Lexus I had an FG Falcon XR6 Turbo....brilliant car........better drive than the majority of so called European performance cars at half the price. But you dismiss them as "ugly", FFS ........no knowledge is even more dangerous than a little  But I digress.....why don't you look at a Lexus IS250....you can pick up one brand new for $49-52 K and a good used one with less than 50,000 k on it for considerably less.....2.5 litre V6, 6 speed auto, full leather....better than any Hyundai you could ever find and all class.if you didn't want to spend that much have a look at a Toyota Camry Hybrid...they won drive.com.au family car of the year.(low 30K). They are of course made in Australia which to some of you poms is a big minus...but I can't take into account prejudice and ignorance.

Whatever you do...DO NOT buy European......they are OK until about 12 months after the warranty runs out....then be prepared to put your hand into your pocket and again and again (unless you buy a Porsche as my "Black Beauty" has been supremely reliable) lol

Most aren't even good before the warranty expires. My BMW coupe required a lot of work and aftermarket parts to get it to my standard (dumped $10K into it in 6 mths). I'm currently helping in my mates car yard which specialises in mid to high end European stuff on a daily basis. Euro's have developed new ways to make simple engineering complicated and unreliable beyond belief.

You got that right...my 993 is almost 14 years old (she is the last of the "real" Porsche's...air cooled....and they seem to be the exception...over engineered to buggery (like the Lexus)...modern Euro's aren't worth a pinch of sh!t.

I have a Mazda 3 and it's OK. It fits the purpose, it's roomy enough for luggage etc and comfortable for long journeys. However it has electrical problems and has broken down several times. Repairs are expensive. I had a BMW in the UK and it knocked spots off the Mazda. I would go for a second hand BMW if I had to chose again.

My E46 was 2001 and manual of course. Pretty good after the German suspension was replaced, and some quality local engineering changes to the engine. Kinda miss it but a Mercedes coupe has my eye as a project. Bloody shame it's an auto which I detest.

Not if it was 'serviced' by a stealership you wouldn't!

Novated lease is the go.

My employer offers Novated Lease and while I love the idea of paying for a car out of my gross income I still can't get away from the fact that you're paying a significant sum every month and still don't own it at the end of the term and have to pay market value if you want to buy it. In the end I bought a 3 yr old Commodore SV6 Wagon for $25k which is a lovely car - drives like new and no monthly payments.

Still not sure if I missed a trick with the Novated Lease though - nobody could explain the benefits.

All the best for 2013 everyone !

RIchard
