  4. Hi guys So.....we've been in Melbourne for nearly two years now...I work full time as an EA in the CBD and my partner is a plumber and tiler with his own bathroom installation company. We have a 4 year old son and a 4 month old baby daughter. Whilst we've found friends through work and other social activities we're ideally wanting to meet up with other young families (we find that having 2 children when we're 30 makes us "young" over here!). When we're not working we do the usual family stuff; kids swimming lessons, days out, cooking, cinema, meals out, parks, camping and the weekly ritual of the local library but on our child free nights we like going to restaurants, bars and clubs. We love our music and enjoy entertaining and having friends round for meals and a few drinks (and house parties very occasionally). Partner plays golf and has recently got in to wake boarding also. If anyone out there is of a like minded nature and has kids (ideally of a similar age to ours) then please get in touch! Be great to hear from you. Alexandra & Jamie
  5. Thanks, but I have been told by an english colleague (who had her second child here) that they had to apply for a UK passport for him. Like us, they are not Australian Citizens, so if both parents are from the UK then the baby's passport needs to be a UK one also. The reason I ask about the Visa, is that again the british colleague, had difficulties bringing her baby back in to Australia after a holiday as the baby wasn't on their visa. This was 5 years ago, so has all of this changed now? Links and website information would be useful. Cheers
  6. Hi all Been a while :-) but struggling to understand exactly what I need to do to apply for a passport for a baby - so hoping some kind and kknowledgeable people on PIO can help me out here..... Currently 6 months pregnant, due in June, with some international travel scheduled for the end of August how do I apply for a passport for the baby once she's born? We are both UK citizens, with PR in Australia so as I understand it the baby will also need to have a UK passport. Has anyone else had to apply, who do I apply through and how long does is take (conscious that we are travelling when she will be 10 weeks so time is short). Also, how do I get her added to our PR Visa, as I don't want any issues when we land back in Oz? Cheers in advance Alex x
  7. Hi all I'm Alex (28) and Jamie (29) have moved over to Melbourne, from Yorkshire, on a 176 Visa with our 2.5 year old. We are currenty staying in a short-term let in Mornington but intend to move to Mordialloc mid January (pending the outcome of our applications - fingers crossed). We are keen to meet up wiith other 20/30 somethings with, or without, kids over the Christmas/New Year period. Jamie's a Plumber and Tiler and I am a PA. We're outgoing, have travelled, like socialising, cooking, and sports. Hope to hear from you soon x
  8. Hiya So, just wondered if anyone else had experienced problems posting 'wanted' ads for accommodation on any sites? I registered with Gumtree Australia, posted 3 ads seeking accommodation and messaged lots of advertisers, however none were sent/submitted - due to security reasons. Apparently you cannot post ads or contact people on Gumtree Australia if you are outside of the country. I have asked a friend, in Oz, if she would mind posting the ad on my behalf but if she's not up for that, I wondered what Australian based sites (which Aussie's actually look at) am I able to post on?? Thanks, Alex
  9. Hi - just seen your post and found it very helpful. Can I ask which relocation agent you used, the approximate cost and explain how they obtain a rental on your behalf if you're not in the country?? Any advice on this matter would be great, as I am really starting to stress out trying to find short-term rental whist finding longer term rental - and the cost of short-term is just outrageous! Thanks, Alexandra x
  10. Hi, Sorry I can't advise - but I too would like to know the answer to your question!! Let's hope someone gets back to you :-)
  11. You totally misunderstood what I was asking - thanks for the 'advice' though, I think I know where I borrowed the money from!
  12. Thanks that's really helpful - much appreciated.
  13. Hi there, I have heard lots of different responses to the above question and the most popular (and preferable) answer is that after 10 years of not living in the UK, the debt is wiped! Please can anyone on here actually tell me what the crack is?? I'm planning on notifying the SLC but as it's currently deducted from my salary via my NI number, how could they want me to pay it off if I'm living and working in Melbourne, and contributing to the state of Vic and no longer the UK? Thanks, Alexandra x
  14. Thanks, think we might have found something courtesy of Kate at Moving to Melbourne. It's all pretty expensive, so just having to suck it up!! Cheers, Alex.
  15. Hi there!! We are moving, from the UK, to Melbourne on a perm 176 visa and will be arriving in mid December. We are really panicking though, as to obtain a rental through an agency you need to provide so much - we we won't have when we first get there, so we're thinking Private rental will be more suitable for us on arrival. We ideally need a furnished home 2/3 bedrooms, with an enclosed garden, close to public transport routes in a family friendly area. We could pay rental monies and deposit upfront and provide references. In the UK we both work full-time (my partner is a self-employed plumber & bathroom and kitchen fitter and I am a PA) iand have jobs lined up to start in January 2013. We sold our home last year and are currently renting a property in the UK. Area's that we would ideally like to stay in are: Parkdale Patterson lakes Burnside heights Bonbeach Noble park north Albert park Balwyn & Balwyn North Camberwell If anyone has anything to offer that meets our requirements or can offer any advice on where to look then please please contact me. Many thanks, Alexandra x
  16. Phew - thanks for that! I remember reading that some time ago, but with constantly searching internet, forums, sites etc it all becomes a bit of a blur! Thanks again.
  17. Hi, Our State Sponsored 176 Visa, for Victoria, was recently granted - but we will be travelling through South East Asia, over 3 weeks, before getting to Oz. We are then flying in to Sydney (to see friends) for 5 nights before making our way to Melbourne. My question is...because we're not flying straight in to Melbourne (where the visa is valid for) - do we still have to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority Visa or will our 176 be legal/sufficient proof for the immigration authorities?? I don't want us to get in trouble as soon as we get there, but seems silly paying for a temp ETA when we have the legal right to be there? Please advise. Cheers, Alexandra
  18. Hi everyone So....today by partner received his IELTS results which were as follows: Listening = 7.5 Reading = 6.0 Writing = 7.0 Speaking = 9.0 Overall Band Score = 7.5 Having checked our eligibility on the 'Skilled - Sponsored (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 176) eligibility points test it would appear that we are 5 points short of the required 65. He scores 30 points for his age, 15 points for his overseas skilled employment, 10 points for qualifications and 5 for state government nomination but as he didn't score a 'band score of at least seven on each of the four components' of the IELTS he gets 0 points! However, according to the latest State Sponsorship Occupation List for Victoria 2011-2012 a person applying for a Plumber (General) occupation the minimum requirement for IELTS is 6.0. Please can someone advise if he really has to do the IELTS test again??? Many thanks, Alexandra
  19. Ah, ok thanks for clarifying that bit re the visa Vinny! We thought we were being 'clever', but obviously the Immigration Dept are too clever for us! Thanks - you too!
  20. Thanks guys - see what you're all saying and there's a lot to think about. We sold our house last July (a lot quicker than anticipated) and in order to save money we've moved in to my father-in laws (we couldn't rent anywhere for cheaper than what our mortgage was), but it's getting tough now for our little family and not to mention my partners dad! So got a bit giddy about the prospect about being able to get out there that bit quicker. Also we thought that it would be beneficial for my partner to go out there on a WHV so that he can start looking for work and have an oz address so that his applications are considered/looked at. I know that you can't take dependents when you're on HWV, so that's why we wanted to know if there was any reason why I couldn't go over on a separate 'holiday only' visa so I can take our little boy with me. Optimistic to hear that the application time for the 176 is about 2 months though :-) If that is the case then we wouldn't bother going to the extra cost of applying for temporary visas.
  21. Hi all :cute: In a desperate bid to get to Melbourne as soon as possible, we are wondering if... My partner (who is the main applicant for a 176 state sponsorship visa under the gsm (general plumber) could go out to Melbourne, 3 months before the 176 visa is granted, on a working holiday visa and if I could travel over with our 2 year old on a holiday visa??? Is this viable and allowed?? We're aware that we will have to travel off shore and back again to validate the 176 when it's granted but are we allowed to go out together but on separate temporary visas? Advice and tips would be much appreciated on this matter. Thank you x
