  4. Hi guys So.....we've been in Melbourne for nearly two years now...I work full time as an EA in the CBD and my partner is a plumber and tiler with his own bathroom installation company. We have a 4 year old son and a 4 month old baby daughter. Whilst we've found friends through work and other social activities we're ideally wanting to meet up with other young families (we find that having 2 children when we're 30 makes us "young" over here!). When we're not working we do the usual family stuff; kids swimming lessons, days out, cooking, cinema, meals out, parks, camping and the weekly ritual of the local library but on our child free nights we like going to restaurants, bars and clubs. We love our music and enjoy entertaining and having friends round for meals and a few drinks (and house parties very occasionally). Partner plays golf and has recently got in to wake boarding also. If anyone out there is of a like minded nature and has kids (ideally of a similar age to ours) then please get in touch! Be great to hear from you. Alexandra & Jamie
  5. Thanks, but I have been told by an english colleague (who had her second child here) that they had to apply for a UK passport for him. Like us, they are not Australian Citizens, so if both parents are from the UK then the baby's passport needs to be a UK one also. The reason I ask about the Visa, is that again the british colleague, had difficulties bringing her baby back in to Australia after a holiday as the baby wasn't on their visa. This was 5 years ago, so has all of this changed now? Links and website information would be useful. Cheers
  6. Hi all Been a while :-) but struggling to understand exactly what I need to do to apply for a passport for a baby - so hoping some kind and kknowledgeable people on PIO can help me out here..... Currently 6 months pregnant, due in June, with some international travel scheduled for the end of August how do I apply for a passport for the baby once she's born? We are both UK citizens, with PR in Australia so as I understand it the baby will also need to have a UK passport. Has anyone else had to apply, who do I apply through and how long does is take (conscious that we are travelling when she will be 10 weeks so time is short). Also, how do I get her added to our PR Visa, as I don't want any issues when we land back in Oz? Cheers in advance Alex x
  7. Hi all I'm Alex (28) and Jamie (29) have moved over to Melbourne, from Yorkshire, on a 176 Visa with our 2.5 year old. We are currenty staying in a short-term let in Mornington but intend to move to Mordialloc mid January (pending the outcome of our applications - fingers crossed). We are keen to meet up wiith other 20/30 somethings with, or without, kids over the Christmas/New Year period. Jamie's a Plumber and Tiler and I am a PA. We're outgoing, have travelled, like socialising, cooking, and sports. Hope to hear from you soon x
  8. Hiya So, just wondered if anyone else had experienced problems posting 'wanted' ads for accommodation on any sites? I registered with Gumtree Australia, posted 3 ads seeking accommodation and messaged lots of advertisers, however none were sent/submitted - due to security reasons. Apparently you cannot post ads or contact people on Gumtree Australia if you are outside of the country. I have asked a friend, in Oz, if she would mind posting the ad on my behalf but if she's not up for that, I wondered what Australian based sites (which Aussie's actually look at) am I able to post on?? Thanks, Alex
  9. Hi - just seen your post and found it very helpful. Can I ask which relocation agent you used, the approximate cost and explain how they obtain a rental on your behalf if you're not in the country?? Any advice on this matter would be great, as I am really starting to stress out trying to find short-term rental whist finding longer term rental - and the cost of short-term is just outrageous! Thanks, Alexandra x
  10. Hi, Sorry I can't advise - but I too would like to know the answer to your question!! Let's hope someone gets back to you :-)
  11. You totally misunderstood what I was asking - thanks for the 'advice' though, I think I know where I borrowed the money from!
  12. Thanks that's really helpful - much appreciated.
  13. Hi there, I have heard lots of different responses to the above question and the most popular (and preferable) answer is that after 10 years of not living in the UK, the debt is wiped! Please can anyone on here actually tell me what the crack is?? I'm planning on notifying the SLC but as it's currently deducted from my salary via my NI number, how could they want me to pay it off if I'm living and working in Melbourne, and contributing to the state of Vic and no longer the UK? Thanks, Alexandra x
  14. Thanks, think we might have found something courtesy of Kate at Moving to Melbourne. It's all pretty expensive, so just having to suck it up!! Cheers, Alex.
