Need all the advice I can get!

Hi everyone Im new to the forum, and joined because im seriously looking into moving to australia. Before i ask a tonne of question i apologise as I know they have probably been asked 100s of times before but trying to scroll through all the theads is a nightmare I am a complete newbe to all this and need all the help i can get, if any of u could help me with getting started that would be great. As the construction market is terrible in the UK, my girlfriend and I are wanting to move to australia in serach of work. I have a degree in Building surveying and my girlfriend has a degree in Architecture. What sort of visas should we be looking at and how long do they take to complete and be finalised? Obviously we will go where we find work, but is there any sites that allow u to apply for jobs in australia to start in maybe 6 months time to give u time to move, or is it better to move somewhere first then look for the jobs? Any advice on accomodation would be great, rental companies, advice on length of leases, typical rental prices for a one bed apartment? How much more expensive is the cost of living? just so i can gage what would be a decent salary Any other advice like setting up new bank accounts, phones etc would also be much appreciated. Sorry to be a pain because I know so little! Thanks Stuart
  2. To say - Hi All, Me and my partner have recently moved to Brisbane into temporary "holiday" accommodation but we are looking to move into our own rented property asap. There are so many different suburbs we really need some good strong guidance from other residents and locals on what suburbs are good, why they are good, which ones are bad and why we should avoid them etc. could anyone please help?! Update - So we are looking for either a house or apartment, need 2 bedrooms or more, being a little further out from the city wouldnt be too much for a problem as we hope to have a car but we want are looking to meet friends in the area so i guess cant be too remote... We have noticed the further out you are the more space you get but is that worth it if the area isnt great or you maybe are too far from the CBD? Thank you so much in advance!! :-) Ash. Reason for update - Forgot to mention some crucial details as @lastonealive mentioned (thank you btw!) Thanks, Ash.
  3. Hi everyone. Been a long time! Hope you are all well! We just wanted to put something out there to all prospective migrants... Wife and I are considering renting out a property for those migrating who are in need of furnished accommodation which is PET FRIENDLY. As migrants ourselves, we struggled to find anywhere when we first migrated that had everything we needed when we arrived (as all our things were in transit) and allowed dogs. Things like ironing boards, kids cot, cutlery, pots, pans, iron, kettle and toaster etc. were all things we needed and had to buy when we arrived. We figured by having a place that was a short to mid-term lease that had all essentials, with bills included, Internet etc. plus allowed pets would take a lot of stress off people who are making the move. Just wanted to know people's thoughts and whether this would be something in demand? Look forward to your thoughts
  4. Hi Please take it easy with me, this is my first post. I have just excepted a Field Service position based in Sydney. Start date is 16 March. I have done lots of research on Domain and real estate for rental properties, but now I'm really over whelmed. My situation is:- Myself, wife and 10 year old daughter $500 - $550 max per week rental The role is field based, with work either in Sydney CBD, greater region or a flight away to Melbourne etc I do not mind 1 - 1,5 hrs commute each way (I currently do this in the UK) looking for:- 3 bed, property (not apartment) Garden Garage Family friendly & Safe Suburb Wife like moderen and open plan at most short drive (15 mins) to beach Good Schools Areas we have considered - Thoughts on these please Wollongong, figtree, Berkeley, Bellambi, Woonona, Austinmer & Corrimal, Terrigal & Central Coast Region Camden, Mount Annan, Spring Farm Gosford, Kariong Emu Plains, Springwood, Penrtith - You get a lot for your $ here and would keep Wife happy, but long way from the coast. I know its a long list, but if anyone can comment on any of the above, re schools, shops, safety commute times, out door lifestyle it would be great. We have friends who live in Oxford Falls and Brookvale, but the northern beaches are way out of our budget. All info guidance appreciated.
  5. Hi all, We have got the 176 visa and are planning to move on late September 2014. Could you please provide me with some advice like - 1. Which one should be the best area to live for a family of 4 (two little children aged 8 and 2) 2. How much would it cost to rent? 3. Is it possible to rent it BEFORE our arrival so that we can go there straight away? 4. where can I get help in renting the ideal home? Thanks in advance for your kind cooperation.

    Moving to Sydney

Hi all, My wife and I will be moving to Sydney in May. We welcome any tips that can be provided. I will be working in North Sydney. Any ideas for places to live? We are looking for a min 2 bed 2 bath house relatively close to the office (max 30 min commute driving or by public transport). Budget is $1200 p.w. From researching so far we like the look of Mosman, Neutral Bay, lower North Shore. Also, Surry Hills and Darlinghurst on the other side. We are open to any and all suggestions. We are looking to start a family and have a dog. Not sure if rentals are generally pet friendly. We like the beach, going out to restaurants, walks, parks....those sorts of things. Wouldn't want to be anywhere too quiet as we like going out. Thanks in advance for all the help! Best
  7. We are breaking our lease on our small 2 bed 2 bath villa in a great spot in Bulcock Beach Caloundra. If anyone wants more details just message me Millie x

    Sydney City or Beach?

Hi everyone, first post so take it easy :-) I've had a look around the site but can't quite find what I'm looking for. I'm about to (fingers crossed) get confirmation of my 457, and have been looking at potential places to live. I'll be working in Kogarah, but will have a car, and willing to drive a little. My girlfriend thinks living by the sea will be perfect (e.g. Coogee, Clovelly), which, I agree will be appealing. She likes the idea of living in a beach community (coming from London) which will be laid back, relaxing, and have good cafes, bars and restaurants. I actually think beach communities are quite small as many will be transient, travellers, backpackers etc. My view is that somewhere like Surry Hills, Marrickville will have more on a day to day basis for living, and have a larger community to get to know, and are well connected transport wise (Marrickville). Does anyone have a beach v city opinion in Sydney, and in particular, what are the thoughts on say, Coogee v Marrickville? Marrickville seems like a pretty interesting, multicultural town with good shops, cafes, restaurants, a community feel, and good transport links with the city. Beachwise Coogee looks like a good Sydney choice. Would appreciate any thoughts at all. Cheers!

    move to Sydney - Help!

My husband has been offered a job in Sydney which although initially will be based at the Rocks will be relocated to Lane Cove. We have decided that the North Shore is best for us (we have two girls, High School and Primary age). We will be renting for up to 4 years so need advice about suburbs. Obviously want good public schools and my husband will need to commute to Lane Cove. Our budget for rent will be around $1200 weekly and we also have a dog. I've been reading that rentals that take dogs are few and far between which is a bit of a worry! Any advice out there about suburbs we should be looking at and the schools around those areas? I've heard that Killara and East Lindfield are good areas and the schools are good to, but just wondering if we would be better off going a bit further north as my husband will eventually be based in Lane Cove. The more I look the more confused and scared I feel!!
  11. Hi all, I wonder if anyone can help? My 22 year old son is off to Sydney in a few weeks for a year or two (if he can do three months WOOF)...the only problem is, he has left it late to look for accommodation (kids...tut). Does anyone know any names of hostels etc that he can stay for the first month or two? He will be looking to rent a place after that (or before if he can find somewhere). If you could help then I would be appreciative. Thanks Regards Mike:arghh:
