  1. We have already had one Christmas Day as our eldest, partner and baby came over from Canberra for a week and my youngest and his partner joined us. It was lovely having a houseful but today they all left and I’m exhausted ! Another Christmas Day still to come too!

    Medicare card

Have you downloaded the app? You need your my gov log in to access your account online. I can’t remember exactly but the app will take you through it. The app is Medicare expense plus and is green.

    Medicare card

The card will be available on the express plus Medicare app long before you get it in the post, especially at this time of year. It actually says it should be available online after you enroll. Worth a try anyway. I tried to link the website but it doesn’t work.

    Medicare card

You should be able to get the number or have been given it, that’s all you need. If you download the Medicare plus app you should be able to link it to my gov and get a digital card too.
  5. You will only need police clearance for countries you have spent more than 90 days in since obtaining your PR. The Australian police check will be done as part of the process you do not need to apply for this.
  6. Simply apply for the police tests and send them the acknowledgment, book a medical test and inform them of the appointment with evidence. It won’t matter then that the results do not arrive with the time stipulated. You simply need to prove that you have actioned them with the tile limit. Even if your medical appointment is after the 28 days it will be fine. You have no control over appointment availability or processing time and they know this, they just want you to prove you are on with it.
  7. Go back and talk to the bank and see if possible to arrange in advance. Don’t ask the tellers ask to see someone who deals with transfers or overseas customers. You might be able to sort that way. Otherwise you can use an fx firm that will allow you to transfer money over several days. Most do. We always use Wise now they do charge a fee but it works out better than the fee free fx companies I am registered with. The all take a while to register so do this now with a couple so you can compare. The high street banks are usually poorer rates. Do not let the solicitor sort it, they will charge you for the privilege and not bother much about the rates. Do make sure you report the sake to HMRC within the time limits.
  8. We moved my OH SIPP to AJ Bell about a year ago on the advice of our FA and we are happy enough with the performance and the fees are lower too. We were and still are Aus resident. We asked specifically about this as we had heard about issues when we decide to drawdown. The only stipulation is that we keep a UK bank account (which we intend to do ……if allowed!). Is it not possible to simply self manage your UK SIPP anyway without moving it? We didn’t want to DIY so didn’t ask.
  9. When buying tickets online I have never been asked for proof when entering. Sometimes I feel dismayed they don’t ask me to prove I’m old enough anymore…….
  10. Only if the employer sponsors them though. Not all are willing to do it.
  11. Apart from the temporary vis being renewed do have a strategy to stay in Australia? I ask because not everyone qualifies for a PR visa and after living here for 4 years and making a home you might be faced with no alternative but to return home.
  12. I thought you could only get an RRV if you had a PR visa. Why didn’t he apply for the second year WHV?
  13. Queensland is a huge state though, some of it dry red dirt, some lush rainforest. I guess it depends where the designated areas for this visa are…..
  14. Vic do, unless your license is restricted to A only for a specific reason. To be fair people don’t just get in an automatic for the first time and start commuting. They would stall it for a start! Country kids drive old bangers and trucks on their properties as soon as they can reach the pedals and they are usually manual. My friend used to drive the old car to the gate (on a farm this can be a long way) then get the school bus long before she could legally learn to drive. Yes the actual mechanics are different but road skills are the same.
  15. Not just in SA. Unless your license is restricted to Automatic only ( for specific reasons like a disability) then you can drive either without further tests.
  16. In SA at least there is no difference if you pass your test in an automatic you can still drive a manual, though many never do. Unlike in the UK where a manual test allows you to drive automatic but not the other way around. I used to hate automatics but new ones are much better and now I wouldn’t go back.
  17. With a 190 visa there is no requirement to work in the nominated occupation.
  18. How long before your husband can get British citizenship? His settled status will lapse after a while and spouse visas for the UK are harder to get nowadays. You never know. People do end up returning to the UK.
  19. Having said that. Relocating is very expensive and moving pets costs thousands.
  20. That’s what I did. No stamps to show. Seemed to work ok.
  21. Simply answer the questions on the medical form you are given honestly. At the medical the doctor may ask you to elaborate IF they think it is an ongoing issue. They do not request your records from GP IF you need to have further clarification they refer you to a specialist for a report which will state the current medical issue of concern, any current or future treatments and longer term prognosis. Given your issues were over 10 years ago I can’t see them being relevant if no further complications. The medical itself covers basic physical condition, eyesight, blood tests, x rays, urine test. Nothing invasive. And it is confidential.
  22. Then again one shipping agent told me I couldn’t ship my goose down duvet!! Needless to say we didn’t use them.
  23. The tax on forex gains is a bit of a grey area. I have been told different things by different accountants and tax advisors. My eventual take is that the ATO aren’t really bothered about people’s personal taxed income and incidental gains because of timings of transfer. They are more interested in people who are actually trading currency to make profit. We have transferred various amounts from the UK over the years as our decision to stay became firm. Some were at a better rate than when we moved and some were worse. We have not declared any unless they triggered a tax event, like withdrawing shares or dividends.
  24. It can depend on your occupation exactly what is required. You can check on the immigration and assessment body website. The visa you state is a brand new application and doesn’t get any exemptions like the transfer one. Your original skills assessment etc may still be valid, you need to check the expiry dates.
  25. Yes it will be taxed by the ATO. It doesn’t have to arrive in Australia for this to happen just when you actually receive it. If it is also taxed in the UK this will be taken into account with the double taxation agreement. Either that or you can get a refund from HMRC. You can arrange to just be taxed in Australia going forward there is a form to send to the ATO who approve it and send to HMRC who then inform the pension company to stop withholding tax. This as you can imagine takes a while…… The deadline for reruns is the end of this month unless you appoint a tax agent, which is probably a good idea for your first one.
