    Yes, what we have now is a parent visa program that is (IMHO) dysfunctional. Having tens of thousands of parents living in Australia on Bridging Visas isn't a desirable state of affairs. I'll be preparing a blog on the subject in the next day or two. Best regards.

    Depends on the domicile status of the deceased.     Don't completely discount a partner visa application - I've seen some pretty tenuous relationships secure partner visas, all of which were granted to individuals based in the UK. The A$8k charge isn't an insignificant sum to most, but in the absence of other options it would be worthwhile considering - particularly if you can register your relationship (unfortunately not an option in WA). A WH visa and co-habitation for 12 months before lodging an onshore 820/801 is probably the preferred option here. Best regards.

    You'd think so, Linda - but while you and I and others on this thread understand parent visas and can quote statistics the vast majority of politicians in the Federal Government appear to have little comprehension of the subject. Parent visas are not the main game in town. Skilled visas are commanding the headlines. The occasional post about parent visas on SBS online isn't going to be on the radar of the incumbent Government. That said ... let's see what's in the migration review. Onwards!

    602 visas granted to aged parents are usually issued with a 10 year permitted period of stay. Have you ever heard of a 602 visa holder of senior years being required to leave Australia? It may be nonsense and make no sense to Australia financially, but until there's a consensus in the Federal Government in both Houses to abolish existing visa options this is what we have. Of course changes to the Migration Program may be afoot in the next 4 or so weeks. Whether this includes parent visas or is solely focused on skilled visa outcomes remains to be seen. Best regards.

    There are some bleak and somewhat inaccurate comments in the above. For example, if the health requirement isn't met a subclass 864 or 804 visa applicant would usually look at a subclass 602 Medical Treatment visa. Leaving Australia without a BVB isn't necessarily a problem. One applies for a Visitor visa (the e651 if from the UK) to get back to Australia and applies for the reinstatement of the BVA when back - a BV can only be granted to a person who is physically in Australia. So maybe all is not lost after all! Best regards.

    I recommend that you consider the after tax position in Australia of a lump sum versus a regular pension. The former is subject to Australia's Applicable Fund Earnings (AFEs) tax provisions whereby some of the monies will be tax free. The latter will be wholly taxable in Australia. Best regards.
