i wouldn’t say adapt vixxy i would say embrace. its so exciting to be getting closer to getting out of this county which has such a massive problem with BLAME. no matter what happens in this country they always need someone to blame and/or someone to deflect blame to. i truly do hate the UK. beans could be worth $100 over there Stacey i would still go because money isn’t the attraction, its the lifestyle and attitude of the people who run the country, you will get what you work for in Australia and i for one am not afraid to get stuck in, work hard and give my family the lifestyle we deserve. . . . . . . . . . . . .goodness me I’m doing some amount of ranting just now.

I think you'll find that I knock the premise that Australia is undeserving of any criticism (which means yes, I do like to "challenge" people who can't take a joke about the place). I frequently post about the stuff I like, just as I frequently post about stuff I don't like. That's my prerogative. I've never said I hate Australia.

ps cheap was my poor choice of wording. I basically meant we have primark and cheap food stores as alternative to supermarket and high street does this exist in Australia? are the low cost alternatives. We've been hit hard by the recession struggled for the last 3 years and guess I'm scared we could be worse off, that's all no offense intended

They have some ALDI stores and a supermarket chain called Franklins which is known for its 'no frills' products. There are cheaper clothes stores too - similar to Primark is a shop called Supre - have a look at their website, might not be what you are looking for but there are options.

Was it me who said 'if you're the sort of person who spends their life in Australia. forever on their calculator converting the price of everything they buy from AUD to GBP, then DON'T come here!'

Financially, I am doing it tough at the moment and, as a large part of my income depends upon money from the UK, converted at the shocking present FX rates, I SHOULD be complaining incessantly.

But as long as the sun is shining like it is today, and the temperature is hovering very pleasantly around the middle 20's, and I'm healthy, who cares? Not me.

Mary I'm simply trying to prepare and make informed choices before we arrived. We have never been to oz don't know if we'll be happy there certainly hope so but I'm under know illusions that the grass is always greener. I'm not trying to convert between £ and $ I know it's relative to your Ozzie wage. Ive struggled financially here for a long time and don't want to end up in the same position yes the sun may shine but that won't help me sleep at night if I couldn't pay bills etc. Don't judge people who are using this forum for its purpose- advise and support!

I have given up thinking about costs and whats cheaper etc. I know that we can afford to live on what I will be earning and thats that. I think also most people will not go to Oz and carry on the exact same lifestyle they had in the UK, there are more free things to do which can save money, also i think people will eat differently and shop differently due to the warmer weather. I know i dont fancy heavy stodgy food when it's warm. we also do all our shopping on one of the big supermarkerts here, when it is cld and raining you want to go in and get it all over and done ith, but i'm looking forward to going to the markets on the weekend when it's nice and warm and getting fresh fruit, meat, fish etc. which will bring the cost of our food down a bit

Thats what I hope for getting nice fresh stuff from local shops and cooking more and eventually buying a house and have a veg patch n fruit trees etc basically the good life lol I'm hoping we'll manage on my oh's wage even though it's quite low to start with until I get a job then I'll feel better we couldn't survive on one wage here that's why I'm worrying but time will tell. I think most of us hoping to emigrate wants to check out the costs of things in Australia.

We checked out the costs of things on the two holidays there, a month in perth and a month in Brisbane and based on the average wage in each country, we found overall it was almost exactly the same. Some things are dearer, some things are cheaper.

You will get some on PIO who say its alot dearer, but they are either using the current exchange rate, or not realising that the costs of everything in the uk have gone up similarly. Plus we haven't had any real pay rises in the last 3 years.

The best advice i can give to anyone if you want a similar standard of living is this ....... Make sure the wage you get is at least double in dollars to the wage you had in the uk, even near to two and a half times more if you can manage it.

£30,000 in the uk you need to earn at least 65,000/70,000 in Australia to have a similar standard of living.

Its cheap down at the beach, take a cooler box and pack some snacks and you can spend the day there for next to nowt, swimming in the warm azure clear seas, play on the stunning beaches, boogie boarding in the surf all for free and the best thing is ......... The weathers almost guaranteed to be fantastic. You can't put a price on a fantastic family day out like that. Get yerselfs down to Cottesloe or Scarborogh beach, they are incredible.
