Whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion, I feel the need to correct one or two of you with some facts.

Our friends Lorraine & Marcus are very typical of the UK immigrants on the Gold Coast (they may not be typical of you) - they leave for a better life and I don't feel it should be criticised because they are shown as having a better life. Their home is typical of a waterfront home, whilst we all don't have waterfront homes the majority of us have pools. I am speaking on behalf of many of our friends here on the Gold Coast but we are all living far better lives than we did in the UK for a variety of reasons (including our homes).

Marcus is a tiler/builder - it may not have been on the SOL last year but you have no idea when they got their visa - it could have been years ago and they came and validated their visa as so many other people do. Nor do you know whether their visa was based on Marcus or Lorraine.

Before emigrating to Australia perhaps the commenter’s on here need to understand the geography of England before trying their hand at such a large and vast country – they are not from Essex.

We all have accents and we all have parts of our body we don't like - please don't be so cruel to suggest a woman in her 40's needs a tummy tuck and the progamme shows 'porkers' not poms. Surely this shows they are ‘real’ people?

With regards to driving on the beach, those people that have done their research into the Gold Coast (should you be deciding on coming here) you will know there is an island called Stradbroke - this island encourages 4 x 4 drives on certain sections of the beach. You need a licence to do this - without this you can be prosecuted. Both vehicles shown had current licences.

Lorraine and Marcus are two of the most genuine people we have had the pleasure of knowing since being on the Gold Coast so please try and keep an open mind in that programmes like these are edited and cut and therefore you may not get the 'full' picture.

We all have a fantastic lifestyle here but we rely on each other to get through the emotions of leaving family and friends behind – this lifestyle does come at a premium. It works for some people but doesn’t work for other but we are here giving it a go.

Well said......difficult to ascertain each situation on programmes like this. You must look us up when you move to Oxenford.....you're just down the road from Lorraine and Marcus lol.

Maybe they had a £400,000 Mortgage to pay in the uk and sold their property with good profit??? they did both have their own company etc etc..

Lmao yeah I was thinking that too maybe it's time for her to get a one piece and cover up or swap the champers for lipo and a tummy tuck ;)

From Scarborough? I'm glad Lorraine and Marcus met us from Scarborough as opposed to you! Your comments are appalling!

Ok so the womans voice got a bit grating after a while and the moobs at the barbie and the wobbly belly could have been discretely covered but i don't think anybody was harmed during the filming of this one so can't understand the bitchiness and spiteful comments.

I enjoyed the show and I am also mature enough to understand that the editors can hand pick footage to make you look however they like so wouldn't judge anybody based on a tv portrayal of their life and opinions.

If anything it was as positive as WDU is negative ie a bit exaggerated probably. I can't think why anybody watching wouldn't want to move to Australia given the evidence on show!

I rarely come on the site now I live here but a friend messaged me to say how appalled she was at what she had read on here, and I now see why.

Lorraine and Marcus are two of the most welcoming and friendly people we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. A few random comments made during a 30 minute TV programme that has been edited from over 3 months of filming does not do them justice and can only be put down to bad editing.

Lorraine is NOT a professional sunbather! She works extremely hard for the lifestyle they have, but unlike most don’t go on complaining about it. To those who made such unpleasant comments about her physical appearance- post a picture of yourselves in a bikini and let’s see how fantastic you look. If you can look as great as she does in her 40’s after having a child then I would expect to see it as your profile picture rather than some of the shots I see here. Nick and Sez- do you want to show us what you look like? Or is the anonymity of a forum the best you can manage? I can only assume Helene that the kangaroos would look a damn site better in a bikini than you would! I would maybe consider swapping your “Angelic” face for a “Total Bitch” one. I assume you are one of the people who whines about the media making women paranoid about their image by making celebrities unrealistic role models, yet when you see a normal looking person are happy to bitch along with the other morons.

What do you want as an “average Brit”? The group of people I am friends with, of whom Lorraine and Marcus are two, consist of teachers, managers, IT professionals, nurses, electricians, tilers, admin staff and builders to name a few. We are also lucky enough to have numerous Aussie friends, who have come to the Gold Coast for the same lifestyle as us and love to socialise with us after equally hard weeks at work. Rent is high everywhere here and for little more than the rest are paying, they are lucky enough to have a fantastic waterfront home, which they share with all of us on a regular basis. Without their kindness, we would not know half of the people we do now, thanks to them arranging family friendly events and welcoming us into their home for BBQ’s and parties.

The Australian Tourist industry had nothing to do with the show. People were merely approached on social networking sites etc from the director/ producer to share their views of living in our area.

A waterfront house is more than achievable for a couple like Lorraine and Marcus, who both work hard in their respective professions, and are so highly regarded by their clients.

If the editing of this show has made people think that these guys are chavs, then the chavs in England must really have gone up in the world since I left a few months ago.

The beach they were driving down is one of the 4 x 4 beaches we have here. They are used mainly by the Aussie’s who love to go off-roading and are a fantastic day out as part of the Aussie outdoor lifestyle you all claim you want! Why is it when people have a bit of fun you start to criticise? I can only assume its narrow minded ignorance and jealousy. There are plenty of accessible beaches to sunbathe on- its a 4 x 4 beach because its not easily accessible for the tourists in their hire cars!

Do you really want a TV show devoted to watching Lorraine as she sits for hours upon end doing people’s books at the computer? Working during the day for her Aussie company then staying up most of the night to do the work her UK clients (who wouldn’t swap accountants because she is that good!) send her. The title surely is the clue- did you not want to see the nicer aspects of the move rather than the day to day grind?

Why you think “we” get a bad rep over here is beyond me. All Australians I have met love the “poms” and there is great banter between us. They know we have all come here to work and don’t sponge off the government, which is a problem here just like it is in the UK.

Jimithechew- loud? You know remote controls come with volume controls? I am pretty sure if you put it to a reasonable level you would hear them just fine. They couldn’t be less “loud” if they tried. Feel free to stay away from the Gold Coast. The country is more than big enough and I am sure you can find your block of paradise far away from us! Please, please find your block far away from us!!

Perth42- you see positives even in the negatives? Hmmm.... you clearly don’t! They have a teenage daughter who they moved to the other side of the world and family situations that were very difficult to leave behind, and they were sensible enough to say that if the new life was making them miserable they would be brave enough to go back. I hope the people you meet when you get here are less judgmental about you.

You have all based your nasty comments on a few snapshots of somebody’s life. Please remember-what we read about you people here on this forum is all we know about you. Read your comments. Would you want to be your friend based on what you have said here? I wouldn’t, and when you arrive here, people arranging events on this forum and others may be the only way you get to socialise!

Our lives are amazing here. We own a fantastic home with a pool, 5 mins from the motorway, 10 from the beaches and 5 from the theme parks. The people we have met are all fantastic fun loving, go getters, and we never have a weekend free! Work is work anywhere but to come home and enjoy what we have here is the reason we all came. Maybe the Gold Coast isn’t for everyone. It is a bit crazy at times. We are certainly far wilder here than we ever were in the UK. However, the people you criticise are practically family to us now. When we have a crisis, those moobs and bellies come straight over and help us. They treat us better than our own families do! When we feel down, those “loud mouthed chavs” are the first to sit and listen to us and cheer us up. They welcome every new, scared family with open arms and make you love them within an hour of knowing them. You get told to not judge a book by its cover. Don’t judge a person on their accent, their bodies or a few bits of editing.

We had 3 threads running for the same program so we have merged them all together. Please may I also take this opportunity to remind you all of the forum rules. The people who take part in these shows are probably going to be members so please keep the personal remarks to yourself.

Thanks

I must admit I wasn't going to watch as often these programmes do tend to entertain rather than 'inform' and also seeing Australia on TV when I am in the UK does my mindset no good at all

But in the end I caved in and watched it, and fairly glad I did. OK, I admit that some of the people on there annoyed me, fair play we are all different, BUT.

As some other posters have said the programme would have been very heavily edited and often the true personality of people doesn't come through. Yep, the ladies voice was a wee bit annoying, but god forbid that I ever appeared on such a show.

I would no doubt get slated for my cockney accent, unshaven appearance and rolling my own fags. And the family concerned in no way held my views about what Australia is all about, but that's surely not enough to be hammered as she has been in some posts.

Big house, waterfront, beach every weekend, NOT my cup of tea. Give me the outback, solitude and peacefulness of rural Australia any day. But there again thar would make boring TV and no doubt I would be criticized as much if not more the way sone were in the programme last night.

Cheers Tony.

A few months ago my younger sister was on Deal or No Deal. Due to a couple of throw away comments about being able to afford matching underwear she was slated on the facebook page for the show. When she called me she was quite upset but my response was that these were people who spent their Sunday evenings on social networking sites while she had the brass ones to get onto the show and have a go. As such their opinion counted for the square root of nothing.

I have to admit that my initial reaction was similar to many of you but then I took the time to think about it and decided that it is easy to slate people who have been willing to have a go while we sit comfortably in our living rooms without really knowing them as a couple and based upon what a faceless, unaccountable editor deems to be juicy enough to air. Judging by this thread they have achieved their goal of getting people talking about it and generating interest for the next episodes.

There is another expat site which I no longer visit because I don't like the way certain members treat others and have enjoyed this site for quite some time as although there is a certain level of banter and argument it rarely gets personal or out of hand. It's actually quite disappointing to see that going on here with nothing more than cheap shots which are absolutely unnecessary. Get a grip.

What a great review you & Peeka both, I to haven't been on here for ages as I find it becomes very argumentative & immature people backbiting & whinging.

Like Peeka & Pinksuedeshoes I only know from the experience of my Brother, his wife & 4 teenage kids what trials & tribulations uprooting the family can be like, they are now into their 3rd year, my Brother had a reasonable job which finished in December but to provide for his family is now working away from home alternate weeks, his wife not having worked in UK is in full time employment, their eldest son has flown the nest in fulltime work & living in Upper Coomera, the eldest daughter is in her last year, 3rd child getting ready to study for uni & 4th child excelling in & out of school. All of this they have achieved totally on their own they are now a wonderful family unit, they decided not to get involved in forums etc & have slowly built up a social network through work & friends, they left loving families here my brother an elderly Mum who incidentally is getting ready to make her 3rd visit in June, she loves the Gold Coast & all it has she is hoping to get to Stradbrooke this year. Queensland is their home they work hard but reep the rewards at leisure. I really only watched the programme to see the scenery as I won't fly but enjoyed it & look forward to the next 2 episodes. Never judge a book by it's cover people out there until you get to know somebody.

Whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion, I feel the need to correct one or two of you with some facts.

This is the downside to such a show though isn't it. The full(er) picture is never really painted, the viewers only see what is edited and shown. Some of it favourable, some not. And of course in this day and age of internet forums, Twitter, FB and so on, anyone appearing on anything anywhere could have their lives dissected, for good or bad. I'm not saying its right, but its how it is. Everyone can be/is a critic these days with technology at their fingertips.

I was pretty much expecting a hatchet job when I heard about this show airing. I never expected it to be in depth or really get to know those it was following. It leapt into peoples stories at random points so we have no time to get to know them, build any kind of viewing relationship or a chance to understand the background a little more. Just that point in time and what you see is what you see. Its commercial quick fix TV viewing, heavily edited of course.

I said elsewhere I had been hoping for at least one family story from the UK to Aus so we could get to know them, see what they went through over the course of the series. Not just picking up random stories once there. However I doubt having seen last nights episode that this is going to be the case and I am sure there will be many more people shown in short bursts with editing job doing its job. Personally for me the show left me unmoved, underwhelmed and pretty much uninvolved. Even the more favourably edited parts still didn't really pull me in as there was so little to go on. But I didn't expect more for 7.30pm on ITV mid week. Its meant to be fluff viewing.

The things I did like about it were the views of the area, the scenery, rainforest, ocean and so on. I liked seeing the lifeguard teaching, seeing he had changed his career to stay in Aus. For me Aus isn't all about sunshine and beaches or beach lifestyle/culture. It is so much more than that but ITV are going to of course plug its big selling points for the UK viewing public.

OK, I'm going to jump in here because I feel I can give a balanced comment on the programme because I have just returned to the UK having lived on the Gold Coast for over 3 years (and miss it so very very much but that's another story!!)

First off, the lady that is getting a pasting on here - to be fair, she was the one saying she was a 'professional sunbather' and she was probably saying it in jest but it didn't come over that way and it was VERY embarrassing - simple! Did make me chuckle though that as she was saying this, it was chucking it down with rain lol!

I am told the place she lives in is a rental, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that (I wish to god we had stayed in one) but the programme editing gave you the impression that they owned this home with a 'look at this - this is what we own here compared to what we owned in the UK' attitude. She could have done with getting the agents or whoever to sort that pool out though - bit of a green rancid mess! (I'm sure it wasn't THAT green by choice!!)

The surf life saving champ and the Irish fella working as a park ranger were both great stories and balanced it out.

However, my biggest gripe was that an awful lot of the scenery footage was NOT the Gold Coast. For example, the first shots of the hinterland when covering the Irish fella were but then it showed what appeared to be Blue Mountain footage!!!

The families trip to the beach in their 4x4 was as someone else has pointed out, Stradbroke Island and most likely the North one at that, which is beautiful but it takes 2-3 hours to get too. Not a problem but again not the Gold Coast.

Overall it was reasonably balanced, but edited controversially which is such a shame because if the tv producers/editors had made a more 'honest' programme it would have proved much more interesting and thought provoking.

There are those that live or attempt to live a 'glamorous' lifestyle which is not everyone's cup of tea and those living truly interesting lives like the two fellas but inbetween there are the rest of us, just trying live a 'normal' life whatever that is, but with more opportunities! I hope the tv folks show some of these :)

I actually feel really sorry for them as it has been said it has been edited for entertainment value with no concern for the family. I think you would have to be very narrow minded if you think you could get a waterside house without working hard. The program was true reflection of day to day life. Maybe we should remember we are discussing real people who can read what we say.

What I'd like to see

UK kids in Aussie schools. Even if not able to film much, to hear what the kids have to say about how they are liking school and their new friends, social life etc. Its not all about always doing stuff with the family and the day to day Mon-Fri is an important part of life. Sure its nice to see weekends on a beach but I'd like to see more day to day stuff. How they found work, if it was straight forward, have they made friends. See people *at* work also, alongside their Aussie co workers.

Really the more I think about it (and read), the more this show is a total non starter in terms of giving us anything much to go on.

After being on a migration TV show a few times and possibly even appearing on this one at some point, i think deep down you know before you even agree to filming it that some viewers will give you a damn good slating,, in a way and no matter how much it hurts reading the comments you do have to have the ability to shrug it off. Jeez i had some very hurtful things said about me ,on this forum by members who i had thought were friends,,, by god it was a slap in the face but in the end i decided to stuff them ,stand tall and be proud i was worth bitching about!!!

If youve got the guts to film a TV show thats going to be aired infront of thousands ,you need the guts to take the negative with the possitive and i am sure Marcus and his family can do this. No-one can ever understand how much a programme can be edited to suit until they have participated in one,,Marcus will know the truth in what he filmed and can hopefully laugh at the way some of it is edited and thats all the matters.

As peeka mentioned some of us are lucky enough to live in massive houses or waterfront houses or even be mortgage free, i can tick one of those boxes and can also tell you it was due to bloody hard work for many years and a bit of luck with the exchange rate. It is possible and not a dream for everyone.

We are all different and percieve things in different ways, yea have a rant at the way the 'proffesionals' have edited this show but out of courtesy lets lay off the personal comments, we are all human and out of the millions of people i have met in life i am yet to come across a 'perfect' one.

Credit to Marcus and family for having the guts to let the cameras and thousands of viewers into their life,, and guys if you are reading let the nasty comments go over your head and heres lots of luck for many more happy years in Oz.I cant wait to see your show.

My wife has read the posts on here, i haven't and she said there has been some not so nice comments about this lady and all i have to say without reading any of this thread is this ............... i thought she was great, she seemed a really nice, lively bubbly person and her family seemed nice as well, the sort of people i would like to meet up with and make friends with. I am loud and brash, i like cracking jokes and not being serious and i can imagine having a barbecue, or a party at their place would be great. Also one thing shone through with them ............ they were loving it in Australia and we love it in Australia and thats the sort of people i want to hang around with, upbeat, happy go lucky types who will help take your mind off leaving family and friends back home, who will help keep your chin up when your having self doubts in the first year or so when you get out there.

I have read the comments and i think some people think they can pass comment on here in a way that they wouldn't do in real life, thinking this lady will never find out and, its a laugh to take the p7ss and we will never meet, so say what i want. You have to understand the lady and her family will have filmed for hours more than what is shown and the programme makers will have chosen the bits they want, to portray the programme in a way they want, to their agenda and they have shown this lady in a bad light, but she seemed really nice and comments about her looks are just not on and the people who have done this should delete their posts.

Would like to say a big thank you to Peeka and Pinksuedeshoes for your defence on behalf of my family . It is very upsetting to read the comments that these people have written about us. But hopefuly those sort of people will not be allowed in to Australia and if they did get in then they would hate our lifestyle and return with their legs between their tails. As we are all aware you need friends out here as we have all left our familes back in the UK and all you guys have become part of our family and our lives are richer for knowing you all. I would like to point out that out house is a rental and you too could afford a house like this if you are lucky enough to get jobs when you arrive, but the Aussies do not like backstabbing Poms. I do apologise for the sound of my voice but there is not much I can do about that and I would be most grateful if you would like to chip in to provide me a tumy tuck as being in my 40's and had a child things to tend to go south.... We applied for our visa back in 2008 on a Wall and Floor Tiler 175 Visa which was on the CSL list, but even then when we first arrived you have to exchange your UK qualifications over to Australian equivelant, whch takes more time and money and you cannot get a job until you have done this. As a Wall and Floor tiler I leave home at 5.00 am in the morning to start work and all of this boring mundane work life has been filmed as well, but 1 tille looks like another after a while, so I am sure you will love watching that, which is most probably why it has not been shown! I am still studying to become qualified out here to the Australian Tax laws, but have got a daytime job with a a large Company and still work in the evenings doing my UK clients. When we said we would give it a year and if our daughter was not happy she could go back we meant as a family as our daughters happiness is the most important thing. She is happy and I am sorry to dissappoint you all thinking of coming over here but we are here to stay. With regard to "Chavs" driving on the beach as Peeka said you have to have a licence to do this and only on certain beaches. We do not sit around the pubs drinking at weekends but go out as a family and explore this beautiful country we live in. Not just beaches but the rainforests and surrounding areas. Our daughter has just been with us to the Great Barrier Reef snorkelling and diving for the first time ever in her life .With a group of 20 of us so we could all experience together. To all those that think we are Chavs's we came from Milford in Surrey (Not Farnham!!!!) and as I see one member lives in Surrey they will be aware of how expensive Surrey is too live in. Which is why we came here so our daughter would have a better lifestyle and be able to live in the area she is being brought up in. When you arrive and see the sort of house you can rent and buy, which is so different to what you can afford in the UK, you will understand that our house is very affordable to rent, but we wont be buying waterfront as we wont be able to afford it. We all work very hard over here and our friends that we have made here Aussie and English are amazing, we all come from different areas and backgrounds but we dont judge you by your accent or because you have a double chin, or a fat belly, we all have worked and saved really hard to start a new lifestyle and have gone through the same situation to get here,so there is a bond and we surrport each other through the hard times, we could bore you with those as well, as there can be plenty of tears here as well, but then that would not be Poms In Paradise now would it? When you arrive I do hope you come here with your eyes wide open as it is hard work and with your judgemetal atttitudes you will not last long as people will drop you as soon as you start bitching! You will be very sad and lonely and miles away from your family.....

Welcome to PIO Shocked.

Your life sounds amazing, but this has come through sheer hard work. I wouldnt be worrying about any trivia that has been written about you guys, you know who and what you are and the proof of the pudding is that you are living a great existence here in Australia.

It took guts to go on the show! If you have got it flaunt it, that what I say lol.!

Hopefully something will be shown :) It'd be nice to hear what the kids have to say about how they are finding it as so often people move their families wanting a 'better' life for their kids. I realise they probably wouldn't be able to film in school but look forward to seeing if kids are given a chance to give some feedback in other ways.
