HI Tully,

I researched aussie move b4 coming out and was shocked at prices, but been here 6 weeks now and apart from groceries etc cost of living is no different from home.Electronic goods are cheap as home although white goods are expensive! We bought washing machine and large fridge on gumtree which work fine, but if you want new stuff you could buy when you are financially secure.[

Just a thought,Derek:biggrin:

My wife and I are hoping to move to Perth in July this year if i can get sponsorship on a 457 visa. We both have good jobs in Ireland (ie: reasonably secure) at the moment but due to our debts (negative equity etc) and living costs we find that we have little or no money at the end of every month and are just sick of living month to month. We have been going through the figures using the australian tax calculator etc and after factoring in living costs in Perth (from aussiemove.com.au) and keeping up with our repayments at home we would still have $2-3k left over at the end of each month for discretionary spending ie:socialising/ travel etc. That is if i can get work in my field (QS) at the average salary and she gets a full time job in admin (circa $40k pa). We would not leave unless i had a job lined up but we were wondering how easy it is to get an admin/ reception job in perth at the moment as we have heard that unemployment is on the up. I dont think it would work financially if it was just my salary. Would we be crazy to move without my wife having something lined up first?

Hi, my fiance and i are getting ready to move to Perth. We are awaiting our vsa's . As he is 38 and i am 32 He has been sponsered for his 457 and will going up north to the Pillbara region working in the mines for 28 days at a time:cry:. So needless to mention im a tiny bit nervous as i will be on my own alot. I have been promised a few hours in an Irish pub in Northbridge as i know one of the owners. My backround is in security and i also have a reception course finished. Does anyone know if there are female security personell working in the mines?? Or if receptionist jobs are easy to come by? I am hoping that if i get full time work i'll get to know people and i wont have too much time on my hands (in case i get homesick). Any advice greatly appreciated!

Hi Corkgal,

You will be fine. I'm also from Cork and my husband and I are roughly the same age as you guys so if you fancy meeting up when you arrive pm me. I'm here 3 months and do miss Cork loads but loving Perth. Sorry can't help about jobs on mines but I do work in recruitment so pm me and I will pass on you cv to the relevant person if you want. Good luck.[

I am hoping to book a ticket to bring my mum out here for xmas this year. Can anyone tell if certain airlines provide assistance to indiviuals to help them get to their connecting flight.

My mum has empheyesma and has a phobia of escalators so I am afraid that she will get herself into a panic when trying to find her connecting flight. Do airlines provide such a service. At the moment I am looking into smaller connecting airports from Ireland as I doubt she will manage Heathrow. I am going to fly to Kuala Lumper to meet her and fly on with her to Perth.

Any advice? Thanks in advance

Hi irishchicko,

My friend does this every time she books flights for her mam as her mam is elderly and very nervous. Whether you book with an agent or online it aks if you or anyone travelling with you needs assistance. If so they will provide a wheelchair and get someone to push it, so if she needs to make a connecting flight they will collect her from the plane in a wheelchair and bring her right to her connecting flight check in. Also you should try to book Cork Amsterdam- Amsterdam Kuala Lumper etc as Amsterdam is a much smaller and less intimidating airport. Good Luck.

Irish Chicko you can fly direct with Emirates to Perth. Dublin-dubai-perth so no horrible layovers in europe. Request assitance at checkin and the airline will take her from gate to gate. If it is one of the huge airports like Heathrow, they bring you on the car things. We flew with singapore in sep and you get off the plane and walk a few gates down and get on another plane so no escaltors and not to far but far enough to give your legs a little stretch.

Just found out about the teaching yesterday (ie: 5 years at a time )icon9.png. We prob would only plan 3-5 years out there to start. Been getting very negative vibes from a QS friend that has moved to melbourne and hates it but cant afford to move back home to no job in Ireland. He thinks we would be mad to go. Really making us second guess our move. 2 good jobs at home, nice house (no negative equity) and here we are wanting to fly to the other side of the world. Sorry i spoke to him at all but maybe he is right. Heading to the expo in dublin this weekend so will see how it goes! Thanks for the info

Went to Expo in Dublin and didnt even get near the door! We got really disheartened with the whole thing as i had got no responses to my CV's. My wife withdrew her application for career break from teaching on Monday (It needed to be signed off on 1st March but her principal allowed her to keep it on file until we went to expo). Then of course I got a job offer with a big contractor based in Perth today (great money, conditions etc) and i had to turn it down as we dont want to give up on permenant teaching job! Maybe next year! :em4600:

Hi, Haven't been on in a while - had to put all plans on hold as my mum was dying:cry:.

Have just started again putting plans in place - my husband is a coded welder and i'm almost trained up as a occupational first aid/manual handling instructor. We're hoping to go using the 457 path - can anyone advise on the best way to find a sponsor? Did everyone travel over to find sponsor? We are planning on leaving next January, looking at the Secret Harbour area but are open to anywhere really. O/H wouldn't mind a FIFO job. We've 3 children - 16, 8 & 6. Any help greatly appreciated.
