Don't you need your IELTS for the ANMC skills assessment?

Hi everyone

can i also ask, once you have the IELTS pass, you don't have to do it again, to apply for registration do you, my wife was really annoyed having to do it for the visa and she won't want to do it again. Also - how long is registration taking, she wants to have 3 or 4 months off, is it taking longer than that?

cheers for the replies and best of luck to everyone.

hey there Kitty,

first of all I would say your are right to hold off on IELTS, i sat it last feb and passed but now like you say you may not need it,

Also there is some debate as to whether intstead you need to prove your had your secondary education in english, but my advice would be to wait until AHPRA ask you for that, and only then.

I love this forum and there is much debate but at the end of the day, my advice would be to provide AHPRA with exactly (no more, no less) what they ask for on the website for reg applications and just do it, and dont pay too much attention to everyone elses opinions about what AHPRA want/require as each person is different.

I have had much debate with them over the last year and looking back i should have just suck it up and got on with it (im still not registered (started Jun 2010).and now held up as the address is in brisbane)....

so, do it as though you havent read anything else about them on here etc. and send them exactly all the certified info they ask for, best way i think.

Then the next thing is to apply for a visa (another minefield) but take is slow lilke you are doing, and choose which ones right for you. Its not always a clear process as you can apply for certain visas before your reg is granted etc so thats what you may read people have done on here. But if you want to apply for an independent work visa (175) etc. the process is generally to obtain a skills assessment from the ANMC,(a requirement on some visas) and then set about applying for the actual visa.

I am waiting for registration for the simple reason that its a lot of the same info they ask for in the ANMC - and therefore I am going to ask them to send the documentation over to them, and therefore its a bit cheaper and saves doing it all again.

I have found it a minefield hence the reason im writing on here. I was applying for a 175, and then I changed my mind for a 457 cos an agency advised me about this visa and its benefits (sponsored) and now i;ve decided to be independent again, as they agency suggest there are limited jobs for me, despite 6 years experience including 4 years community, orthopaedic surgical, medical, and continence specialist nursing! which was a shock! and also we;re heading for Perth and little or no sponsorships exists there at the moment for overseas nurses as they have to fill the posts with Aussie nurses first.

So dont alarmed if you hear things along the way like this too. I think you are right to take it slow.

Just going back to ahpra, i have had to fill in a second application form, and provide further certified ID documents, a job letter and a CV. Getting the docs done cos me £240 the other day and theres not many - hence the reason im lecturing you about doing exactly what AHPRA ask for To the Letter in advance so they have litle reason to delay your application!!.

We will all get registered eventually and then you watch next year they will suddenly decide oh we just need to hear from the NMC that you are practising and not a nutter! and hey presto here you go!! lol....

Hope that helps, I;ll shut up now lol

Andie

I may always miss the boat.........................but eventually another one comes along..................Eventually!

No Thank you very much, your reply is really VERY HELPFUL. PLs ANMC?? DO I need to contact them aswell? I thought I only NEEDED TO REGISTER WITH AHPRA then apply for the Visa etc/ jobs etc??

xxxxx Thank you very much, GOOD LUCK.

hi again

sorry i should have been more specific - ANMC are responsible for performing skills assessments prior to you applying for a visa, so no just Ahpra for registration.

Im not sure if this is required for all visas, but if like myself you are applying for an independent (175) visa or similar then i think its required. They are a seperate body to ahpra. Ahpra regulate nurses (like NMC), the ANMC perform skills assessments and they are an "accrediting" authority :

Welcome to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council Limited (ANMAC) | Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council. On the left hand side theres an international section, but get a cuppa tea before you sit down to read! lol...

I think if like me you are applying for registration first, then when I get registration, i apply for the modified assessment (on the right hand side of website under quick links) and its quite a bit cheaper etc....the downside for me is the 175 visa is far more expensive and prob take much longer, than the 457 (sponsored) for that reason probably but its swings and roundabouts cos if you go for sponsorship then you are contracted to stay with them for a period of time, and can only leave that job if you get another sponsor or are coming home etc. as once you;ve given notice i think you have around 28 days to get out of Aus (scary stuff;-) - others on here can correct me if im wrong! ;-)

When i started down this road i thought it would be hard i had no idea how much it would test me,

anything i can do to help i will cos when i was first looking my head spun round and round!!!! ;-(

and my hubby is so confused! lol....

seems a far cry since I was told Aus was crying out for nurses and it would be a doddle! hahahahahahah thats funny lol...

but, i'll stop being a whinging pom now, best of luck and anything else just ask....

THANK YOU VERY MUCH, ANDIE. YOU ARE SO HELPFUL!!!!:biggrin:

I went to sleep so stressed out, turned and tossed all night BUT now you have helped i feel positive. I think just like you I am doing the 175, it has less/no restrictions and I think I have got just about enough points, for the profession/ degree etc. I will look into the ANMC/VISA etc once my AHPRA reg is in place!

wow what a process this will be!! but hey goodluck, dont go too far because i will be contacting you along the way, if thats cool!!

Hi conatcted ahpra again on sat night to confirm if they had received my application. I know that it is a computer generated reply, but they confirmed that it was with them and was being assessed. Now my question is will it really be in the process of being assessed as it was only received 2 weeks ago? or more realisticly is it sitting on someones pile waiting to be assessed. Anyway at least I know it's there and they should have everything as I was really thorough it getting all my documents together was lucky enough to pass ielts on 8.5 first time too in july only to find out you don't have to do it anymore which is a bit of a bummer!! So have to keep money in the bank now at all times in case payment is requested.

Hi everyone! I an new to this forum and sympathise with all in this nightmare of a waiting game.

I posted my application in october (Brisbane office) and AHPRA say they received it 9th November, I e-mailed them before christmas and they replied 23rd Dec saying they were currently working on applications received from August thro October and since mine was not received until November it has still to be processed!

I am planning to go to Queensland on a 457 Visa, I have a job offer and was due to start today (17th). The company appointed a migration officer back in September and at that time she thought I had plenty of time to get registered, obviously not realising how slow the registration process is.

I have not sat the IELTS test, I e-mailed AHPRA in September and they replied I may not have to take the test as long as I was taught and assessed in english for both secondary schooling and nurse training, hopefully they wont change their minds when they do finally get around to processing my application!

Hopefully we wont be kept waiting for too much longer:twitcy:

Hi Guys

Today I had an email from AHPRA ........................ Dear Mr Waiting for registration , Your board paper has not been resolved and you will be contacted in Febuary.

What can you do.

Has anyone actually received registration before leaving the UK or does everyone just get an eligible to register letter. It's just Queensland are now saying they will not send off my state sponsorship form 1100 for my 176 visa unless they see my registration letter or find me on AHPRA. This is all sooo frustrating.

Great news last week getting my eligibilty but now it seems it's not worth the paper it's written on....

That's crazy why have they said February?

Hi s4mmy

I have 3 years experience. They say it needs to be looked at by the Nurse policy manager ?. I called the Nurse policy manager and left a message. Not that she will call back.

I am going to head office in Melbourne tomorrow and wont move untill I get some result.

Yes I did send all the education papers.

Hey Helen,

OMG i can't believe they are saying that!! I am in pretty much the same boat as you, nearly 12 weeks since i applied to AHPRA so i am still waiting on that but after that i will need to prove that i am registered so SS can send off the form. Is the eligible letter not enough for Queensland to send the form? Surely they must be clued up with the AHPRA procedure???? This whole carry on is enough to put you off migrating

Can anyone tell me if you only have to pass the IELTS once?

Once you have passed, thats it, no need to do it again, even if we don't emigrate for say 4 years.

Thanks for the reply.

Hi again and thanks for your reply, my wife passed the IELTS in 2008 for the 175 PR visa which we have validated and we might emigrate anytime up until 2014, will she have to do it again, if she applies for a job as a nurse in Australia, is once enough, or do you need to have it done in the previous 2 years? Sounds crazy if you have to, being English and having already passed it.

cheers again.

Good luck for today.

Did they question just the years of experience or the IELTS?

Nightmare all this I've been told mine going to the board on 25th. That's over a month from when they processed.

Are they changing guidelines for IELTS then?

Hi s4mmy

Just back from AHPRA in Melbourne , sat in reception for 2 hours and asked every 15 mins if someone would come and speak to me........... no was the reply.

I asked to speak to a manager and was told none on duty. From sitting in the reception for 2 hours every person that came in was asking 'whats my registration stage ' to be told in progress. Alos people asking about IELTS for Uk nurses , all to be told you need IELTS for registration.

So after two hours I filled in a complaint form and left it with them. Following this I went to Ombudsman's office and left a messgae for him to call me.

Totally fed up with this now.
