Or (and this is a risk based decision only you can make) you could opt not to have it as you would be able to get medical cover in the UK either as a resident or under your Medicare reciprocal agreement.

You just wouldn't be covered for cancellations, luggage loss or illness at the stopover destination

Many people would take the risk, not sure I would but many do

For many years, I travelled back and forth to the UK every 2 years to see my family. I never once took out travel insurance, unless I decided to add on a side trip to Europe.    I always felt that since I was covered for medical in both countries, wasn't planning a stopover and never took anything of great value with me in either direction, it wasn't worth it.

I think I used Direct line one way option when I moved back to the uk in 2018. Just in case I needed cover whilst in transit and also I could get cover for the excess on the insurance for my hire car before I bought my own car in the uk. The excess if they decide the car is damaged is quite big, so it gave some peace of mind. Others wouldn’t worry, but I thought it prudent. 🤷🏻‍♀️

However, if you had become unwell on the flight and the Captain decided to divert the plane it would have cost a HUGE amount and you would be liable for the cost!

The only time I had to claim on our travel insurance it was worth every penny I had paid for insurance and never claimed. I had a very bad fall in Zambia, two trips to different hospitals there, no one in the country could fix my arm that was  broken in 3 places, and my  shoulder was very badly damaged. Flown to Nairobi to be operated on. Made a difficult decision to continue trip to Uk for very special family reason, saw specialist there for treatment, then months of physio when back here. Everything expense was covered.

It was a long time ago and to be honest, it never occurred to me.  Nowadays I rarely travel and if I do, it's on holiday, not just visiting family, so I would get insurance.

Not to mention an eye watering medical bill if you needed hospitalisation in another country.  Even worse, you are stuck in another country in a really bad way medically and you’ve got to find a few hundred thousand to be repatriated back home.

Yup. Someone I know fell en route to Aus at Singapore airport. Broke his hip. Fortunately insurance covered emergency operation and hospital recovery plus medical transfers back to UK. He also claimed for the missed holiday in Aus. Would have cost a fortune otherwise.
s**t happens!

Fair enough. If it was super serious and the flight had to detour and land somewhere other than the scheduled point because of your illness/injury/SQ321-esque scenario, you could have been on the hook for a ton though.

Personally, I wouldn't ever travel without travel insurance; thankfully, though, the credit card comes with a hell of a good policy (which just paid out several thousand after Deathstar failed to depart on time and was delayed 22 hours)
