Jobs before or when arrived?

Many cannot secure work before arriving. Some do, though for many the reality is having to make the leap without a job to go to.

What is your profession? Some fields it's probably more favourable to find work prior to going out.

My husband works in Air Conditioning, I work in the local authority Adult Social Services which I love and pays well

I think my husband will be ok to find work before he arrives but I reckon I will have to wait until we arrive!!

Personally I think it depends totally on where you are heading and what skills and qualifications you have.   Some people with needed skills can get work before they arrive, but the majority of people just have to get here and go job hunting.  If you are coming to WA at the moment you need to be aware that we are in a recession and jobs are no where as easy to find as they used to be.   If you are coming without a job, then you would be best advised to ensure that you  have enough finance behind you to keep you for up to 6 months, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the advice

Yes we have enough savings for a year of rent!

Where are you based?

Hopefully your savings will go beyond covering a years rent. Perth remains an expensive city, even in this present somewhat negative climate.

I live in London prices seem quite similar to London.. I maybe be wrong

But petrol in London is the highest I have ever paid... the tube is rising by an extra £3 a day very soon

Eating out and food shopping extremely expensive here in London

But yes I have enough savings not just for rent but for everything I will need to start up without a job for a while

Not entirely wrong. It is really amazing to agree Perth is not a whole lot cheaper than London these days, as this is a fairly recent phenomenon. A very sad one as well. But there is less incentive, I suppose to spend money in Perth. Few would go out on a regular basis nightly and the cultural diversity does not present itself in the way features strongly in London.

There is not a pub culture as such, luckily considering the price of alcohol at least in inner city locations. (although some improvement recently evident) One can find better priced housing further out, not easily accessible in London.

All to their own of course, but all things being as they are, I wouldn't probably pick Perth of all places unless other factors are involved.

Not a whole lot cheaper in what way?

The price of accomodation is not even close. If you had something in London and sold it to come there's a massive amount of cash to see you through till you get a job.

We go out a lot. Doesn't have to be expensive. There are several good cheap restaurants near us and the BYO culture is alive and well.

No pub culture? It's not like the UK but different. Go into any one of the many bars in Perth, Leederville, Subi and they are packed. I find the atmosphere, specially in summer, to be closer to a night out in say Spain.

When we emigrated in 92 we were advised not to come to Perth. Unemployment and interest rates were high, middle of a recession and we didn't have jobs to come to. We hadn't been before, we had a 2 year old and we'd both given good jobs up to come.

Best move we ever made.

I've been going between Perth and London for far longer than the period you have lived in Perth. What was once a very distinct difference is no more. Of course you live far out, which I noted was far cheaper than London equivalent. Housing and rents suffer great severe affordability issues in Australian cities as well, but less so if willing to move further out. London is an alpha city, just mentioning Perth in the same sentence, in matters of affordability suggests a great change over time.

Nobody from Europe that has stayed by us, have ever remarked how cheap Perth is. Quite the contrary all have found it expensive to be here as tourists. Quantity of bars has no bearing what so ever on the quality. Closer to Spain? Besides the barmy evening weather I have never thought myself in Spain.

In 92 yes jobs were hard to fight but cost of living still low. Hardly fair to compare those times to what people will discover in 17.

Surely that is a bit negative.    Things are tough in WA at the moment and people need to be aware of that, but suggesting they will be out of work for a year is perhaps overdoing it.

I'm getting use to negative comments regarding Perth when I ask a question!

I'm still moving there no matter how tough, I like a challenge & a good beach

Apart from him always being negative, he makes a good point a years rent in savings would not last a year probably nearer to 3-4 months. You still have to eat, pay for services, cars, school expenses etc. A years rent in savings is about $25,000 not really a lot if you have no income.

Unfortunately it is not not that negative.

Perth is doing it very tough currently and the job market is very competitive, it seems to be across the board too.  I know a few qualified professionals who have been out of work for a year and many others now do FIFO to Sydney/Melbourne.  I moved over from Sydney earlier this year and I am now coming up on 6 months without work (qualified accountant).  I think I'm going to start my own thing next month.  Trades seem to be a bit better but rates have dropped significantly (30-50%) on a few years back.

Re cost of living v London.  Your rent/property will be cheaper (silver lining of the recessions - rents dropping and plenty of choice).  Your day to day living, leisure and socialising will be more.  Very expensive to go out for a few drinks or meals etc. (+20% on Sydney).  I struggle to remember when I have been able to buy a drink for <$10 in anywhere half decent (bowling club is cheaper but a bit grotty)

Sounds like the OP is moving no matter what and if they have a year's living costs (I'd say $50-$60k + whatever you want to spend on a car) then they should be ok but be prepared for a long wait to find work.

Good luck

Well no actually it is not. One may struggle to get the 'simplest' of jobs due to over subscription and no inside/local contacts willing to give a leg up. Of course no need to heed what I write. Besides no insight into personal connections of others, just purely a simple observation from someone on the ground and knowing the Perth situation.

The OP may well be able to afford a time of inactivity. Others may not so may be just a little more prepared for al eventualities.

Realistic you probably mean. No reason giving false cheery accounts of such a serious topic. I have no vested interests either way than to give it how it is. Immigration is a business, a big one at that. It is hardly in the interests of those to give factual accounts. While those that have been here sometime, may mean well, they are not in al likelihood having the face the problems of those arriving at the moment.

This does way beyond the personal issues often expressed such as dullness and loneliness to more pressing issues of survival and cost of doing so. These costs are not in pure economic terms, of course, though bad enough, but pressures on family in particular.

  • 3 weeks later...

We arrived 2.5 weeks ago without jobs lined up. My husband started work today in his area, way better pay than his last company.

We almost didn't come to Perth because of what we had read on here about no jobs, thankfully we took the risk as so far we are very happy with our choice.

That's great news.  Congrats, what type of work does he do?

Perth seems to be one of those places that polarises people (even those who've never stepped foot in the state.  It's not perfect, but we love living here, we have a good life, we eat out, we go on holidays and have in the 10 years we've been here gained a close network of friends.  The only person to ever comment about something being expensive was my father in law .. he thought tomatoes were cheaper than Asda ... but it didn't stop him eating them and that I think is the key - budget, live within your means and life can be good wherever you're living.

Good look on the move Chloe x

Congratulations to your hubby on his job.  I'm glad the negative comments didn't put you off coming to WA
