CaptainR
The fuel price cycle, forgot about that one. Pretty sure they didn't do that in the UK. Still can't get my head around it here, but as I understand the price starts high and over 2 weeks or so gets down to the lowest price and the suddenly goes back up and the cycle starts again... Quokka2005
How cold it gets. I remember being on here saying I'd be dying if it goes past 30. Now I'm freezing if it drops below 20. The racism. It's like aboriginal people are a different species sometimes to white people here. I'm in the outback but it's still been a shock for some of us including aussies that have moved up here. bunbury61
Back when we came early 1970s I was surprised that kangaroos weren't hopping around everywhere ( think there are actually more now than there were then!)I was surprised that bananas were all home grown- and pineapples and other tropical fruits. I was surprised and delighted at the 'dignity of labour' compared with the UK where plumbers, electricians and brickies were very much looked down on (bloody snobs when I think about it) They aren't looked down on now . Go to the local golf club ,as much blue collar as white collar . Some are earning very big bucks
KarenLou83
Just jumping in on this post, whilst everyone is saying what they didn't expect before you arrived in Australia, can anyone tell me how bad the spider's are over there?? We are in the waiting process now for our skilled visa and I keep hearing horror stories about how bad the dangerous spiders are with coming into your home etc!! Is it as bad as the stories I'm hearing??
Bobj
Koalas are not native to WA. A colony was created at Yanchep. All wild budgerigahs are green; colour mutations are the result of selective breeding. Cheers, Bobj.

Is it as bad as the stories I'm hearing?? I don't think the spiders are a great problem here but other folk will tell you a different story. Maybe depends where you live. We used to get outside the house sprayed once a year and I didn't see any spiders in the house. Since coming to Tasmania we've never had the house sprayed and I've not seen a spider or cockroach in the house at all.

No its not half as bad as you think it will be, good pest sprays keep them out of your house and you soon learn they are not around every corner waiting to pounce,,lol, Cal x

It's around 20C here during the day (perfect) and everyone is still wearing summer clothes. It does drop at night though but not had the heating on yet but got the warmer duvet on the bed now. Hearing about the racism toward the aboriginal people doesn't surprise me. I found some of the people in small outback towns a bit scary. Think of the Duelling Banjos tune. Petals
Each State has its description of some goods. Beer for instance, schooner and pot and other small items which are also different. Each State has different regulations on tradespeople. So people find they can work in their trade in one state but not another.
KarenLou83
Thanks Bobj ijust love that picture NOT haha I am aware that there are deadly spiders and that caution will need to be used, but I didn't want to be constantly checking my bed. where I sit, opening cupboards etc etc etc I'm guessing there will be at last one or two living in my garden when we get over there but I've been told to reside near the sea as there are hardly any there??? Skani
Just jumping in on this post, whilst everyone is saying what they didn't expect before you arrived in Australia, can anyone tell me how bad the spider's are over there?? Where in Australia are you heading? Spiders are more prolific in warmer areas...so the further north you are. I hardly ever see a spider here and they are usually quite small...but I'm in one of the coolest parts of the country. I know that my daughter was freaked out by the size of spiders when she moved from here to Brisbane.
Booma
Is that the white tail? Are they not the most deadliest ones, and it was in your back garden :err: i got bitten by a white tail in the garden. it burned for a while but thats all. my ozzie hubby told me it was ok but i made him catch it & took it to the hospital so they could identify it but they told me the white tail doesnt deserve its deadly reputation. here is a link to some information to put your mind at rest http://australianmuseum.net.au/white-tailed-spider there are some deadly spiders but they arent running around chasing you or anything. you have to be unlucky or do silly things to have any problems. Booma
some things that surprised me is: how family orientated things are. that pubs arent central to socialising & a lot of people never go at all. how well travelled people are. especially when the people live in small villages. that really surprised me for some reason. how cold it can get in winter in some places & that you can go skiing here. how green some of the countryside is away from the tropical areas. welljock
Sorry, too many negatives for me Ken. You don't think I'm not understanding what you're not saying? What he's saying is England (and Scotland, Wales and NI) all have a bank holiday to celebrate the Queen's birthday, it's the second one in May.
northshorepom
It's not for the Queen's birthday though, is it? It's just a late spring bank holiday. It used to be loosely based on religion (Whitsun), now that's gone. Never had anything to do with the Queen's birthday, official or otherwise

No that's not what I was saying. England (and I think the rest of the UK) don't have a bank holiday for the Queen's Birthday (although some civil servants get a half day or at least my brother did when he was in the civil service). This thread is things we didn't know before we came to Australia and apparently Pommy Jimbo didn't know that England doesn't have a public holiday for the Queen's Birthday (or getting rid of the negatives for him Pommy Jimbo said that before he came to Australia he thought that England had a public holiday for the Queen's Birthday). I found that surprising as I thought he would have noticed that they didn't.

It was 15oc last night and me and the other Scottish girl were freezing. Yeah I expected some and I can understand there's a lot of social issues up here so tempers fray but some of the stuff I've heard is just disgusting. I challenge it and I just get funny looks or get told I haven't been tainted by them yet
Quokka2005
I've been really surprised by the lack of spiders. I want to see a huntsman so I can freak people out back home. The only one I did get to see was a dead one on Fraser island and it wasn't like the ones in the pics, I think it was a youngster. No redbacks yet either. Nobody told me about these stink bug things. On my first day I thought they were winding me up like the drop bear thing lol. Good things - I think it's really good that you can have tap water in restaurants etc without being considered a cheapo. Back home it's almost like they look down on you. People are usually well travelled. I've met people in the outback who have travelled more than most people I know. Although I know a few people who have never left the state

Prior to that we once had a large huntsman climbing up the sitting room wall - I had to get a big glass and a sheet of paper - easy to remove that way - glass over spider - slide sheet of paper under glass and spider - them remove to garden. Never bothered me but he wasn't too keen. Big wuss!
