Thanks everyone! I'm at the airport the now. Going to go get a "Maccas". I didn't realise the airport would be so small or I wouldn't have come so early. Was checked in and through security within 5 mins.

Feeling much more settled. Not sure what my mum will think - I told her I was going to Melbourne haha!!

Stop worrying :P I moved countries at one point and forgot to tell my Mum

Domestic terminals are much smaller generally. And quicker. Enjoy the flight. Wave as you pass overhead (well, wave in the general direction of Adelaide from many miles away anyways  )

The good news is Stacey, you get to start your trip again. Who wouldn't want to get out of Sydney? But by the same token, who wouldn't want to go there? You won't be alone in your feelings about Sydney (or any place on earth for that matter) and now you've experienced things first hand. That is the paradox with world cities on the main stage. You won't be alone in wanting to carve out a niche for yourself. You seem like a nice person who would probably be happier at a slow and steady pace. You'll find that and more besides in WA. Hey, there's got to be a reason so many new comers end up there? Enjoy the vibe.

I'm not worried lol I'm finding it quite funny. I doubt it'll make much difference to her. I could be in New Zealand and technically she wouldn't know. I think most people that I know who aren't on the forum are like where the hell did this come from lol. Just mixing it up  It was such a strange feeling sitting in reception after 10am with nowhere to go. Kinda a good feeling at the same time

That's what I like to hear! The spirit of adventure.

haha yeah it feels like I'm starting all over again! It's weird. I'm looking forward to it though. Someone told me it's going to be 36 this weekend. It was that here today but I didn't really go out. My hostel has a pool so might use it.

Cant wait to see kings park too. Are there any good wildlife parks in Perth?

I hope that Stacy is coming to Perth of her own back and not due to 'behind the scenes' interference. It wouldn't have been the move I'd likely have taken with the choice available, but saying that a smaller city like Perth, may be more to her liking.

There are some darn grotty hostels here though so hopes she finds a decent one. At the very least be interesting to get another perspective on Perth, say initial impression and after a time here.

No doubt 'knowing' people may well ease the way, but I suspect that would have resulted in any city. Just not so many from this Forum perhaps.

I'm not sure what you'll see but whatever you'll see you'll see it in a more relaxed state! Just relax and focus on getting some work. You might even make it there for sun set?

Doubtful. Cloudy today with rain earlier so unlikely to be a sunset. Getting warmer though with high 30's for the weekend. Fully expect to cross Stacy at Cottesloe Beach eradicating the paleness resulting from a British summer.

I wont know if I've made a mistake till I get there but I wanted to try. I always wanted to start my whv in Perth before I picked Sydney and I wish I had. I'm not sure if it's the feeling of "knowing" people that's making me want to go so much. Also it should be a bit more laid back for a dull person like me  only joking Perth people! I just hope I find some work but even if I don't find hospitality work there's heaps of au pair and nannying jobs. Perth seems to be au pair capital of Australia when I last looked! Im feeling quite excited about going. Was going to keep it a surprise until I got there. I'll melt during summer but I'll just have to deal with it, no point pussyfooting around the heat in Australia. It's not like I'm going to escape it unless I go home. It's 40 in Sydney on Friday and 35 right now.

Anyway just thought I would let you guys know my solid plans. Can't wait to meet these quokkas

hi Stacey,

i don't come on here much but I've noticed your posts over the years (being a fellow Scot and all) I have been looking forward to hearing about your Aussie adventure. Perth is a lovely City, it's small and I guess not as fast paced as what we'd be used to in Glasgow or Edinburgh, but for me , that all adds to the appeal. I'm sure you will get on just fine in Perth, your very level headed, trust your instincts and you will be just fine.

We're headed to Townsville April next year and I will be interviewing au pairs!!! If your headed our way and in need of some digs and extra $$ drop me a PM. Would be lovely to have someone around who understands us!!

Anyway, safe flight and have a ball in WA. X

Her head said Melbourne, her heart said Perth - I told her to follow her heart, not sure if that counts as interference! If anything there was more of a chance of her going to Melbourne because that's what she thought 'everyone' here thought she should do.

Lets face it I'm hardly the right person to extol the virtues of Perth but apart from it being where she WANTED to go I do think it'll suit her, it's an easy city to get to grips with and there's probably a month before the worst of the weather starts to kick in - she'll be working at a Margs winery by then ?

I did suggest staying at Freo prison - that looks fab but she chose her own hostel while I was fast asleep! A decent choice not in Northbridge, which knowing she's not a party animal was probably a good decision!

Scottish summer - that's going to take more than a year in Australia!! :)

After a week in Tunisia I was asked if I was invisible when I arrived :)

Ah well you know the beat of the jungle drums on this forum out of sight of course. All sorts of 'suggestions' may have completely confused the poor girl.

Most the hostels are in Northbridge. Must be Fremantle or the beach at either Cottesloe or Scarborough then. Don't recall any others elsewhere.

Hope it's half decent anyway. How odd she may well arrive to shower like conditions. Probably better in her case to kick the show off, rather than the 36 the other day, due back at the weekend.

Well may well bump into her on Cottesloe as mentioned. Any lobster coloured person with a broad Glasgow accent found in a state of disarray and inner turmoil discovered on the beach, I shall obviously render assistance to if looking in the need of some.

That's what I said to her to I think (follow heart)

If she fails to appreciate Perth we'll just have to excommunicate her:dull:

So Stace,

If I were you I'd concentrate on finding work first in Perth...the once job secured which shouldn't be too hard find a room in a shared house http://www.gumtree.com.au/

Make sure you apply for plenty and then you'll have choices, do it as soon as you arrive, that hotel in Applecross looks good.

Places to go in first few weeks

Kings Park

Cottesloe Beach

Fremantle

Swan Valley

Araluen Botanical Park

Perth Zoo (go on the ferry across the South Perth and check out the Lucky Shag while at Barrack St Jetty)

Caversham wildlife park (Whiteman Park)

Bells Rapids or Mundaring Weir

Elaine will show you the Hills region I'm sure (I'd have a look around Kalamunda, drive down Zig Zag hill)

Hillarys Boat Harbour (fireworks there next weekend for start of Summer, happy to pick you up and take you)

That's just a few to start you off.......lots to see and do in Perth contrary to unpopular opinion.

Oh and Rotto....this weekend would actually be a good time as it'll be cooler there if you can get someone to escort you!

I suggested Melbourne when she asked ... like on the forum, you get conflicting advice when you ask so many people lol

Still I hope you settle Stacey and enjoy your time in WA

I refused to offer advice initially till she MADE ME! Seriously, then I said follow your heart and do what you WANT to do not what you think others want you to do. Then I told her she was invited to come out on Friday and I think that swung it tbh.....:dull:

You don't qualify LR not by a long chalk!

Actually feeling quite emotional - a Freo friend has a birthday today and I posted on her FB wall and saw a brilliant post about Freo which i shared with Stacey. Freo will forever be in my heart, no doubt about that!

Hi everyone.

Right well I'll probably get some people thinking I'm silly but Im going to Perth tonight. I thought about it all last night and I was still sitting in reception this morning thinking about it after I checked out. My heart wasn't in Melbourne at the moment and there was only one flight late tonight anyway. I got a good deal with Virgin for Perth.

I wont know if I've made a mistake till I get there but I wanted to try.

Well, I think you're doing exactly the right thing! Well done you!
