Aus schooling years

In pretty much all states someone in yr 10 with a November birthday will turn 16 on their Yr 10 birthday so that they start yr 11 in the Jan/Feb at 16yrs 3 months.

Forget anything you know about UK nomenclature and go with the flow. Don't think about "repeating" "going back" etc it's a foreign country with its own weird ways of doing things - all the states have their own little foibles!

I'm hoping either Queensland or Western Australia. November is the month of birth. Cheers.

In WA, a student must turn 15 years old of age before the cut off date of June 30th (in the year of entry- February intake) to start year 10.

If they are born after June 30th then they will start year 10 the following year.

For example, one of my children will turn 15 just before the cut off date, this means that he will one of the very youngest in his whole year level. This also means by the time he gets to year 12, he will start at only age 16, turn 17 during the year and finish high school whilst he is still only 17. Now, that scares me. Thankfully that is quite a few years off yet.

In Qld year 10 was the year you turn 15. That changed a few years ago around the time prep was introduced but the current year 10 cohort would still be under this regime I think.

Thank you all for your replies. It's helped me work out where she would be in Aus. My daughter starts year 10 in the UK soon so would go into year 10 in Aus in feb 2016. I'm hoping we get things sorted soon as it is such an awkward age in terms of changing schools and mucking around with kids education. Does anyone know if my daughter stayed to do her GCSE's whether she could go to Aus and do year 11 & 12 ( from my calculations she will miss starting year 11 by 4 months if we get a visa when we're hoping). Cheers.

I work for the International School in Perth (full disclosure) and here it is different to the other schools in WA - enrolments are on calendar year of birth, and the school year runs Jul-Jun (like in UK). There is probably an equivalent in Queensland. All other schools in Perth run late Jan/Feb - Dec, and enrolments are based on year July - June - so if your child is July born they will be the oldest, and June born the youngest, etc. Suits a November birth as that child will be in the oldest half of students. There is a calculator you can use which will tell you exactly what grade your child will enter in the normal WA system: http://www.det.wa.edu.au/curriculumsupport/earlychildhood/detcms/school-support-programs/early-childhood-education/home/calculator.en?oid=Article-id-11572345

I would strongly advocate against missing 4 months of year 11, it will be hard to make this up. The Australian Curriculum (which is compulsory throughout Australia) is pretty full-on at that stage of the game. There is another option too, which is the School of Isolated and Distance Education (https://www.side.wa.edu.au/index.php). I only know about this from studying to be a teacher, so not sure if it is appropriate for you or even if what I am suggesting is possible, but it might be an option to start year 11 via this program, then transfer, so your child doesn't have such a great big amount of work to make up when you arrive.

God luck!

This is the one thing that has been confusing me (doesn't take much !!). I have a son who is year 9 in Uk and will be 14 in December, my second son is year 7 and is 12 next May.

am I right in thinking that when we go to Perth next year they will be year 7 and 9 still ?

HI Brown5 - it i

s hard to get your head around - I struggled with it when we moved from UK.

Next year your son who turns 14 in Dec will go into year 9, and your second son who is 12 in May will go into year 7. That is true of all schools in WA (they aren't interested in current school year, just DOB) except the International School, which is in line with the Northern Hemisphere.

Thank you for your reply KLO, I thought they would remain in the same school year, they'll just be in it longer lol (that will please them !)

Your daughter will be in year 8 and and your son will be in year 7. The cut off date is June 30th, this means that your daughter will be one of the oldest in her year and your son will be one of the youngest in his year.

The school year starts in Feb, I recommend that you start the school year here if you can, however, it will not make a huge difference.

Thanks sammy1 that's great don't think my daughter will be impressed though she just started year 9 in the UK :-/ . Possibility of being able to make feb however depends on how long it takes to get approved for my nursing registration and after reading on this forum it can take up to 12 months...

Remember it is a different country and so it is really best not to compare years, your daughter will be fine and it soon will not make a difference to her.

We have many students that arrive throughout the year, they all settle in really well. I would not get too worried at this stage, it only begins to get tricky if they join year 11 or 12.

Thank you sammy1 good advice, I have alread mentioned it to her as I thought this might have been the case but you probably know what 13 years olds are like hahah. This being the reason we have got to emigrate asap as i want her settled before reaches these years... Thanks again

Hi LouLou

Sorry I Have been away so just saw this.

Whether you move in April or July not going to change the academic year they go into (starts end of Jan/start of Feb) so if it were me I would move earlier, so they have less of the academic year to catch up on.

I did my teaching prac down that way and the state schools aren't great TBH. Most parents I know in the area ended up going private. That said, school suitability is entirely dependent on the individual child - do yours have any particular interests, passions or talents that might mean a school with a specialist program suits them well?

Cheers

KLO

Well I'm still confused about my two, who will be ready to join a school after Easter 2016. (We arrive early March)

Born Oct 2006 & Sept 2007.

Will they be year 4 & 5 or stay year 3 & 4 as they would be if in the UK ??

Your 8 yr old will be yr 3 and your 9 yr old in yr 4. Ignore what they might have been in UK it's a foreign country with its own nomenclature.
