Why does everyone think I don't think positively? I want to go to Uni but I can't afford to. Want a job but even though I try I can't get one. Oh yes I try every day. I do persevere - partly why I started this thread. I attend my employment consultant every week. I do all the things I'm supposed to. I look, I hope. Nothing ever changes.

Om nearly 50. None of that has ever worked. None of it. Ive never had a job out of a paper I have daily alerts from seek and all the major job sites. The problem is: I have no skills. Nothing to sell. If I were a plumber or electrician I'd never be out of work. But I'm not so I am. That's just reality. I want to get skills by going to Uni but that route is closed. I'm out of ideas.

......I and many of my friends.....are around your age......

......unskilled.....

......low paid.....

......but rewarding because its something......

......there are unskilled jobs that can give job satisfaction.....

.......they may not pay well.....but sometimes there's a chance to climb the ladder a little....

.......it's a choice until something better comes along.......

What are your IT skills like DS? Do you think you could learn new computer related skills?

Sorry to ask a pertinent question but is your appearance (or could it be) 'business smart'?

I have an IT training company in Scotland and I am willing to help you retrain by 'distant learning' without charging you (you would have to pay for the exam - about $100 - if you put in the work and pass the mock I set you I'll loan you it if I have to.

If you want to come back to Scotland I'll help you get a job here - if you want to stay in Perth I can help there too. I am 47 and have no problem finding work.

Hi, that sounds interesting. My computer skills are reasonable. I've got an MSc in Business I.T. Systems from Strathclyde Uni and I'm an approved marker for the ECDL. European Computer Driving License. But...I've got no maths or calculus or anything like that so I can't program. Got no idea about programming and Im not in any way creative so can't design either :-/ But I'd definitely like to know more. Really really appreciate the offer. Can you tell me more? :-)

I can be business smart. Heres my website: http://www.alandbell.com.au there's some photos of me on it :-)

Didn't you work in a care setting, I thought I remembered you mentioning addictions. I could be completely getting you mixed up with someone else though. If so then I apologise but if I haven't could you not go back into that again?

Hi Stacey, that's right but they won't let me here for lots of bureaucratic reasons :-) good to hear from you.

I specialise is Software Testing, it's not sexy but the maths is minimal and you don't need to be able to program and it is surprisingly well paid often higher than programmers (which does rather annoy them tee-hee, I just tell them if they were better at their jobs there would need to be so many of us :))

This is the kind of role you would have a chance of starting in http://www.seek.com.au/job/27462525 - it doesn't have a salary mentioned but I would expect it to to $60-75k (possibly more I'm a little out of touch). I know it says 2 years plus experience but there are ways around that and I may be able to get you some freelance work, my company does consultancy too and I do take on quite basic work sometimes, it doesn't always pay fantastically - maybe £15 for a couple of hours work but it would get you experience. It is the ISTQB certification mentioned in the advert that I offer training in. I normally do classroom courses but I'm sure we can work out a way to do it.

With a couple of years solid experience you could easily earn $500 a day or £350 a day in Glasgow. Or around $80k or £45k per annum if you wanted a permanent contract. It may not be your dream job but that's probably a dream income right now.

I honestly can't make any promises - getting the qualifications will be the easy part, some creativity may be needed to get a job after that but I do know an awful lot of people in Perth - I set up and ran the Perth Special Interest Group for Software Testing so there aren't many people in the industry in Perth that I don't know and I was highly regarded - as you well know who you know matters a lot in Perth and if you prove to me you have what it takes then I will be willing to send your CV to people who may be able to help.

And once you've earn your airfare back to Scotland then it's easy - if you were here right now I know of two vacancies in Edinburgh for junior testers paying £250 a day. O fcourse you may want to stay in Perth if you get on your feet.

I haven't got my UK company website up and running yet so my URL points to the Australia company I worked with but take a look anyway http://www.disqover.co.uk and have a look at the ISTQB website http://www.istqb.org which is the qualifications I am suggesting.

If you are still interested PM me an email address and we can chat more.

Don't feel obliged, no point me wasting my time (or yours) if your heart isn't in it.

It's Saturday evening here so it'll be probably 18 hours before you here back from me if you message me now :)

IT is a brilliant career - even if you're not overtly technical. Lots of variety and reasonable equity male/female pay. Good to hear lots of opportunities in the UK.

To OP - hope u consider LR's offer - sounds great. In the meantime, how about bus driving? I know in Brisbane they are always looking for people to learn to drive buses and they seem to like older people. I'm sure it can't be that different elsewhere...

I've just read this thread from beginning to end and really feel for you. I understand how hard it must be when every avenue you take, a door gets slammed in your face. And I can't see you managing to save much from $75 a week either! Sounds as if Lady Rainicorn is offering out her hand to help you so good luck!

Sure, a lot of us have been through hard times but I know if I reflect on mine I remember some days being harder than others and there seemed no light at the end of the tunnel, but tomorrow's another day so soldier on! Keep strong, look after your health, and keep persevering.
