uni fees - assistance for perm resident holder

While that sounds great in theory there is a massive oversupply of IT people looking for work.

It is a buyers market for the employer.

I know from my own experience that agencies often get 200 applications from Project Managers when a position is advertised and BAs and Change Managers would also be finding it hard to get work.

While an inexperienced person could possibly do the work, the reality is the agency and/or employer can just cherry pick the very best candidates for interview.

If you don't have much experience you are unlikely to get a look in.

My point was that people have a view of IT which isn't always true - it offers a lot of opportunities. When I started out (ahem some time ago, we had a lot of women in the IT development teams). Now shortage of female IT graduates is seen as a bit of an issue. It's true that generalists PM/CM/BA are struggling - and an oversupply means that yes, employers do look for very specific skills. But there are some opportunities for bright but relatively experienced people - My old consultancy firm in Brissie has recently started a graduate training scheme for instance. I do have to say as an ex-systems tester, when I was testing I was never out of a job but that's not enough to get me back into testing. The only time I have struggled to find work was in Brissie was last year - and I went to UK for a bit and walked into a role. So maybe the trick is to specialise in something in demand and research carefully.

Change Management is tricky as I have met many, many people in the Brisbane market with PROSCI qualification, who are well presented and articulate and have very little real change experience....but they seem to do very well. It's almost like the market prefers CMs with 1-2 years experience instead of more experienced practitioners. A couple of very capable & experienced CMs I know have left Brisbane for Melbourne as they have been unable to find work (and pretty open to taking most things). After 10 years working on some pretty hefty transformations, I can spot an inexperienced CM a mile off. But that doesn't stop people giving it a go and many succeed. I was interviewed last year by a team of three people who had three years CM experience between them (one person had one month according to Linkedin). I didn't get the role due to 'lack of experience'! I have given up on CM at the moment and concentrating on BA as there seems to be more work available - But things seems to be drying up a little and rates are still pretty low

Me too. I can't get a basic bloody admin job. 1 interview in 3 years. Need a heap of qualifications for an office junior role. Nothing mentioned about my years of Board level PA experience in London and the SE. Ggggrrr :(

Well just as soon as my software testing company requires a PA you'll be the first person I contact Northern ;-)

So glad to see that things are working out for you. I've followed your posts, and sat here trying to figure out a way to help - but as I'm on the other side of the country, on unpaid leave, and working in healthcare, couldn't see a way to be of assistance. I truly hope things get a bit easier for you now after what sounds like a horrible run.
