Do you love Tasmania ???

Hi Debroah:

Welcome to PIO... I know where you're coming from we considered Adelaide first, then met peeps from there & decided against it! I think it would be too hot & dusty and rather depends on whether you're the Big City Type.

Derbyshire's lovely, although it's one of the few areas of UK I'm not familiar with, although my brother-in-law is from there & we only moved from Hadrian's Wall country in the Spring. But I would venture to guess it isn't too dissimilar, although there's not great expanses of Limestone, or the caves that go with it - although of course half of Tasmania is pretty well designated Wilderness, covered in forest (another dif) & as I've not seen it can't really vouch for what's there! Lots of guide books for that!

To me it's more like Wales than NZ - nowhere in OZ are you going to get soaring Alpine peaks like the Rockies or The Alps! But we have plenty of rugged country, rolling forests, amazing fresh air, clear skies, and pristine waters with snow-white sandy beaches... There's little light pollution and the place is generally beautifully clean, as you'd expect from a population of 1/2 million in a place the size of Eire...

Depending what branch of the medical prof you're in I can't believe you would not find a job around Hobart - I tried to find a dr 2 wks ago & they've all stopped taking patients, I eventually managed to find one - a delightful chap, from Derbyshire, the Peak Diistrict, & he seemed at home! And there's lots of smaller engineering-type businesses around, boat-builders large & small, In Cat, the X-Channel ferry people, my OH is specialist electronics engineer/tech but has diversified away from tra to Project admin, so there's plenty of opportunities for a smart guy! He is actually getting paid better than UK, but still below nat average - but then you have to put it against Life Style & what kind of life you want... :spinny:

If you're committed to OZ, & clearly you are as you have your Visa's can I ask why you just don't bite the bullet, Take a Fortnight & Come on Down? We were going to come site unseen & it would have been a Big Mistake.... I know it cost us MONEY, but that's all part of the process & to be honest people were much more supportive once we'd been out & TRULY knew what we were getting ourselves into (on both sides of the pond!)- at least then you've validated your visa & if you are flexible enough, there's nothing to say you might not even find jobs then, or at least get to met some employers... We were able to set up our bank accounts, met people do the Whole Island Tour - all the major towns & villages, 2 coasts, etc. so when we moved over 10 wks later at the end of May, we knew precisely what we were doing & it was all so familiar... and if you are needing to get straight into work, that will mean a lot...

We are just buying our 1st ever home, which is so exciting, so even on a modest income that is achievable, and we have acreage, with hill & valley views, so away from this amazing Channel vista - but will be quiet, yet just 20 mins to OH's work & 35 mins from downtown Hobart - which is a delightful place... set along the water between Mt Wellington & the Derwent...

Feel free to pm me & I'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have - have you checked out my photos? :jiggy:

Thanks Herbster for the welcome. I normally frequent pomms in Adelaide.

My OH worked in Adelaideand thought I might like it because it isn't too big and they have hills!!

However I am not sure because of the lack of rain althoug i read that Hobart is the second driest place to Adelaide!!

We are coming to OZ in April defo for at least a year cos I have a career break (Occupational Therapist) and we can validate the visa, but I am not sure where yet.

Going to rent out the house.

The visa only took 4 months from e.lodging!!

Hope to make soom good friends on this site and get loads of advice which I am sure I will.

No Worries Em: Yes, statistics don't tell the whole story, there's a lot of hype around the rain - mostly in the form that when it falls we're not all so good at catching & conserving, but when you look at the rainfall quantities, the city of Hobart gets around the same as the city of London, (I think it was about 24" which is hardly desert ie: less than 5"!) OK the SE UK has problems but again mostly because Big Population with little thought given how to conserve & collect the available rainfall.

It has been dry here the past couple summers, the Midlands have suffered, & there is lobbying to provide a decent irrigation system while at the same time selling the surplus to places like Victoria! Hmmmm??? When we moved into this property which does NOT have mains water - many rural properties fend for themselves - the water tank was all but empty, we put in 2000 gals @ $80 & haven't needed to replenish it again & is now pretty well topped out - that's how much rain we've had the last few months. Check out this link you can set up a daily alert & view all the weather stats your little heart desires!: Weatherzone weather@weatherzone.com.au

Our new rural property again has no mains water, but relies on a winter creek, a dam and water falling from the sky to meet its water requirements... Many peeps might be a bit flummoxed by this, but it's Good: We don't have to pay the council/water board to manage our supply, waste it & or fill it with chemicals, etc., if we don't want that. Here we've successfully managed our water supply by pumping water from our fire tanks into our house tank, when it's wet (no risk of fire) & we know the rain will quickly replenish the diminished stock. I do buy drinking water, although know many people drink their tank water & seem none the worse for it! I like the idea of saving as much of our water as possible to use as we wish - (I hate waste! & see rainwater running down the drain as wasteful!) I don't have to worry about hose pipe bans when I know I'll need to keep the property damp during high risk periods - because it's my water & I've saved it for just this purpose! You just don't leave taps running all round the place & appreciate the rain when it comes - free water!!

But of course, you can live in a town/suburb & have town water too, although many properties are wise to have tanks and conservancy practices in place... It protects your independence PLUS: Every little helps!

Herbster your photos are stunning. :jiggy: I cannot wait to see all those views for real!

Question for those of you already in Tassie - my daughter wants to get a rabbit as a pet once we settle but have heard that in some states rabbits are banned as they are not native? Does anyone know if this is true and is so what are the Tassie rules on it?

Thank you

Thank You! Did you see them all I added loads!

She'll be fine, people have rabbits here, I did wonder, not sure what the rules are, as with cats I'll see if I can find out!! If you want a dog, each has to be licensed, probably depends on the municipality as to how much that costs, usually 2, if you have 3 you need a Kennel License (not always a Given that one would be granted.) If you go to the Municipality you fancy - say Kingobrough for the Kingston/Kettering area it will all be explained...

Sounds like you'll love it here... Next door had a little black rex rabbit running around, spose it had escaped!

There's a blackbird outside singing away - I'm glad we have them here it's always such an uplifting melody...

Hi All, soz it's been ages getting back to PIO, been freeloading the iternet from Service Tasmania and the library but now we're all hooked up and surfing again...yey!

I can't believe we've been here a month already, it's gone so fast. Great to meet you a last Sally, it's really nice to meet people for real after chatting online isnt it. We are now in a rental (by the skin of our teeth) found the place 2 days before we had to be out of our holiday let. It's in a great location in Kingston, the kids can walk to school and the shops are nearby, lovely mountain views, we love it. My parents stayed with us for a month and they left this week which was upsetting but we've skyped like mad and it's all good now. No work as yet......still in holiday mode but applying for jobs and sending off CV's like mad. Bought a car that makes new noises every day...very entertaining!

People are so incredibly friendly, we've had the neighbours over for drinks, been over to another neighbours for BBQ (well, OH,kids and parents did.... I had sickness and squiffs so stayed in bed...boohoo) OH is going to the beer festival with male neighbours, and I've been invited on a girls night out by one of the mums at school............FAB OR WHAT! This place really is everything we hoped it would be and more, can't wait to get stuck right in! :jiggy:

Sounds Fantastic Cutches - Welcome to Tassie:

Sorry you've been poorly - there's lots of it going round - and Fresh Meat! Yummmy for the bugs!!

People are great aren't they? Must be have been amazing having your folks here - did you get to see much or just stayed close to home? Must seem quite quiet now, but summer's coming so there'll be lots to do. Glad the kids have settled, that has to be some of the most anxious times...

Hope everything else all progresses well, good to hear your news... Good luck with the job hunting - never fun, really!

We've just got a month here and then will be moving to our own home for the first time!! If we ever get over our bugs!!!

Cheers Herbster X

Hi all. I haven't posted in a while but just wanted to say that we have our visa, can't believe it was so quick. Still have to sell house which is a toughie. Had a viewer today, first time buyer with large cash deposit but got the feeling that the thought of mowing the grass of our large garden bought him out in a sweat!

Herbster, I have enjoyed reading your posts, Tasmania sure seems to suit you and your pictures are fab.

The Cutches, glad you have settled in so well. What schools are your children attending. I am really worried how my eldest will settle into High School so to hear that your children have coped well is good. Are you pleased with their schools?

When I originally investigated work prospects around Hobart in warehouses for OH things looked good. I am now concerned that things have or may change due to the current financial climate, are there any signs of job losses or cut backs in Tasmania? I know that as a nurse I should be OK for work but I don't want OH to become a kept man!

Take Care

Hi Vanessa:

Thanks for viewing the snaps - helps to give build up a picture, along with what you can see in the guide books & on-line sites. Once we move into our home, hopefully we can get back into a routine of exploring - although I don't know what your buyer would have thought of our acreage - we're wondering if the vendor will be leaving their 4-legged lawn mower... So in retrospect, might not have any time for expolration at all! Oh NO! :twitcy:

Just cost it's grass at your house now, doesn't mean it has to be kept as grass - they could deck some it - turn it into a handy orchard - although the thought of buying a ride-on mower seems to appeal to most blokes - Could be a selling point - buy a ride on mower & include that with the sale... Might work?!!

Haven't really got a sense things are glum here - I know Cadbury's have laid some peeps off, but that was in the works for a while - if you go to the Mercury website for Hobart all the classifieds will be there seems to me there's always work around for peeps that are flexible and don't mid working hard.... Job Search - Australian jobs - Job listing - Find a job - CareerOne

Does he have a qualification/trade/skill (hand-washing is counted as a skill - as a medic you'd know that!) When are you planning on moving over - I suppose it depends on house sale... All the best, nervous times in UK, but a positive with OZ we are more tied to the Asian Markets & our interest rates have been high to deter frivolous borrowing - they have dropped recently by over 1%, which is good for us buyers & for vendors needing to move on too...

I think it will help the kids to get them as involved as possible too; maybe some books on Oz, get them looking at the websites with you so they feel a part of the process and can help with the plans and look forward to their new destination... If they enjoy sports, dance, music, etc. check out possible schools & neighborhoods & find out what there is in those areas that would suit your family - if the kids think they are going to have a better lifestyle and more fun here then that should make the move much more appealing to them therefore easier for mom & dad...

Thanks for the info Herbster. Yes it does depend on house sale for date of arrival. Estate agent rang today says it looks good for possible offer from Saturdays viewers, they have asked if we are flexible with price, I answered to a degree but def no silly offers considered! I won't get too excited as there are alot of people in UK at the moment trying to take advantage of current climate and buy houses for silly prices.

OH has no qualifications as such, he has worked with same company for 20yrs supervising a small team in a warehouse, he also carries out some building and car maintanence and maintains their gardens. He can turn his hand to most things and has an open mind to type of work he will do.

The next step I need to make is register with the Tasmania Nursing board, this is a baffling process so wish me luck!

Ok Vanessa! Good Luck! All the best with your house sale...

Does his boss know that he is planning on leaving? If he doesn't have one, perhaps they can work on drawing up a detailed Job Description that will be very handy to show to any potential new bosses. When it comes time to leave, if your hubby's boss can also provide a blow-by-blow account of what he does & how he's progressed, should increase his chances if he has a good, detailed reference. Bosses here do like to have those for over-seas candidates. In the mean time, probably good for him to sit down & write up a list of everything he does, all tools & admin systems he uses, like a computerized booking inventory system, etc., any tools of the trade, his skills, awards, (long service?) any courses he's completed - health & safety, etc., etc. He knows what he does everyday, but no one else will & until he writes it all down, he probably won't remember everything he does on a daily basis... If he starts thinking about it now he will be very clear when it comes time for job hunting (there's so much confusing jargon used, he needs to be aware of the different ways what he does can be described!) Doing this all now, while he's still doing it every day, will make it easier for him to match his skills with advertised jobs... When you've been in the same job most of your working life it's not easy starting again - however, he will have lots of excellent skills & his steadfastness should be quite appealing. But quantifying his experience with a Job Description and listing all his acquired skills will help him confidently walk into an interview knowing he can do the advertised role, & he won't be deterred by the silly jargon or the fact he's a long way from his old job! In fact searching for something different will be a great new challenge & I'm sure he'll find a complete new set of really friendly work mates...

Keep us updated on your progress... All the best!

Congrats Emma:

Shouldn't be too much longer now - might even get the OK before Christmas - we had our nod as a Christmas Pressy, so could be the same for you guys... Not really sure about schools, remember it is a pretty small population... I was on the bus to Kingston the other day & kids from the Woodbridge School (apart from Peppermint Bay Cruises, their restaurant & a marine center, it is just a small village) were returning to their homes in Kingston, which seems a long way to go to school by usual UK standards (although I used to travel an hr on the bus at the same age!) There are private schools, a plenty, seems to be quite a selection in Hobart, but I understand Taroona is very good, as is of course Kingston... But just use the old Google to check them out, & I'm sure they welcome personal contacts, too. Molesworth, were we're headed is another school in the middle of nowhere but is famous for its ecology programs, so I guess catches kids from a wide rural area...

All the Best Now,

X

Looking at booking our flights soon to Hobart and just wondered which is the easiest way of getting there i.e stopovers and any recommendations for which airline. Ideally want o go from Manchester so that limits us unless we change at Heathrow.

Do any of the airlines allow extra baggage for validation purposes and how about reduced fairs? (I had read something about this recently)

Still can't decide between Adelaide and Hobart?

Might come to Hobart first and see as my gut instinct tells me so.

Did anybody use the resettlement service?

So many questions.

Herbster you said that I could PM you but I am not sure how to!!

Hi Deborah,

I think i will work at the Royal Hobart. I have already sent my CV to the manager of the Oncology ward who has expressed an interest in talking further. I left it that as soon as we had a case officer i would contact her again, but the visa just came and its actually the house sale which is holding us up.

We are also going to validate and visit Tasmania, probably March/April 09 so it will be interesting to swap notes.

Hi Deb:

I'll try for you! I'm actually on this case myself, as my folks have decided to come out @ the end of Jan & Mother wants to see the World in the process - but she can't this time it's crazy - too many stops via LAX, Bangkok, Auckland, Fiji...! (It's not like she hasn't seen most of it already!) But anyway, for them I'm suggesting Business Class, as this has to reduce much if not most of the associated stress of flying such a long way...

From my research, & I'm going to ask if this is true, the 3 quickest carriers seem to be Cathy Pacific via Hong Kong to Melbourne (& their BC looks divine - around $3400) coach about 1/2 £! There seems to be lots of deals @ the mo depending when you want to fly... Singapore Airlines VIA Singapore, & of course Emirates - who we flew with, via Dubai... To easily reach Hobart, Melbourne is your ideal destination... I've been looking @ various options between the other Major Ozzie cities & many of those flights connect thru MEL... If you be adventurous, fly into MEL then either fly/drive to Adelaide to check it out & then fly into Hobart, most of the internal flights seem to cost from as little as $30-10X!

You can, or could get the Xtra ONE TIME baggage allowance (you may need it more when you actially MOVE over) on the International legs, so long as you personally book it ahead of time (some of this seems to be changing) the domestic's are a problem, as like UK internal airlines they are smaller planes & have their limits, so 20Kgs seems more usual...

Virgin Blue: Jan 09 Flights: from $64, each way, Checked Baggage Not included – 23KG allowance may be purchased for $8 online or $20 at the Airport:

Jet Star: from $60 e/w w/20KG check luggage on a Jestsaver fare;

TIGER (which goes from a shed next to Tulamarine!) RT from $90, Baggage Allowance described as:-

Phone our call centre at least 72 hours prior to departure, or Upsize your luggage at the airport during check in. Please note - you can only select up to 15kg. Anything in excess of 15kg will be subject to excess luggage charges per kilogram.

At Melbourne Airport there are Excess Baggage companies that will ship your bags over for you, but don't have any info at present...

Emirates via Dubai & non-stop to MEL was fine, good food/entertainment, - new terminal now open! - but they had removed the foot rests, so might need to check if that's still the case! We took the Airbus where poss as it offers pairs of seats if there are just 2 traveling & then you are not blocked in by a sleeping troll...Unfortunately, this flying to OZ takes DAYS if not weeks of planning & research, unless you have really hi speed connection - I know there are flights from Man, via EMIRATES, flight time under 8hrs: I'd avoid LHR if at ALL poss, it seems to be the cause of so much strife these days, flying regional has many advantages...

Hope this gets you started! X

Hi Debs

We're going on a reccie in March/April '09 flying to Adelaide and eventually ending up in Hobart. We will be coming back via Virgin Blue from Hobart to Melbourne then onto Singapore and finally back to Heathrow. We're flying out with Qantas and if your a HiFX client you can get extra baggage allowance with them, however that is with international flights and you would have to change over to a domestic flight to carry on to Hobart which only allows 30kg and not the 40kg that you would be taking with you on the international flight, which would incurr extra baggage weight fees, i.e. even more money! (not sure how much tho).

It's all enough to do your head in, but hopefully worth it in the end.

Hi Helen,

Are you validating your visa? Were you thinking of Adelaide also?

My OH has worked there and really liked it but I prefer a more temperate climate don't think that I would cope with the long hot summers!!

What is a HIFX client?

Might bump into you.
