Hi Debs,

Not booked flights yet. Its not easy matching up flights, accomodation, shipping!!!

Like the look of Singapore and Emirates airline and wasn't aware that you could fly right to Hobart with Emirates.

Have looked at flying to Melbourne and then sailing across on the ferry to Tassie after buying a car, but can't decide whats the best way to go.

Would like to get over there as soon as possible so we can get the kids into schools as early into the new year as possible.

Hi there,

Just to say that Emirates do not fly into Hobart . Quantas do as it is an internal flight. Although Hobart has the name Hobart International Airport . no international flights at present fly in . It does not have full customs . All baggage has to be reclaimed at the airport that you fly into first in Australia usually for Tassie its Melbourne or Sydney . So it dosent matter what airline you chose to fly into Australia on . Any flight to Hobart is classed as an internal flight . Tiger Airlines do have a bigger baggage allowance . The only airlines at present to fly passengers into Hobart are Tiger, Quantas, Jetstar and Virgin Blue.

What I meant to say was.....

You are able to book the complete journey with Emirates, Manchester, Dubai, Melbourne and finally Hobart (with Jetstar) all on one booking.

However, I am not sure if Jetstar will allow the extra baggage, we are waiting for a reply.

The only way to guarantee everything is to go Qantas as they own/code-share Jetstar.

Jetstar are very very strict about baggage and checkin times and anything else especially if it means they can get more money out of you.!! Qantas are not as particular. Jetstar although owned by Qantas is a stand alone company and if you have a co shared flight even if you booked as Qantas and it is on a Jetstar plane it is under Jetstar rules . And they are painful!! Tiger do have a larger baggage allowance. We have flown . BA, Qantas, Malaysian Airlines and Singapore to Australia and can honestly say that Singapore Airlines far exceeds any of them. As for Internal flights over to here . We go over to Melbourne and use Virgin Blue not a problem with luggage as we are ususally just popping over . But for more luggage we would use Tiger I think that they get to Hobart from Melbourne at about 1.30 to 2 pm daily. Fairly cheap flights if you book them a fair way in advance. Friends are coming over in Feb and they have booked seats for $20 .

Well just booked flights and we are leaving here on the 2nd February!! so exciting - flying with Singapore to Melbourne and then with Tiger to Hobart.

The container is going on the 5th January so lots of sorting to be done.

Can't believe we are going in 2 months!! :goofy:

Hi

Thank you Herbster.

Sally/Herbster can either of you tell me what banks are in Kingston or Hobart? Have been recommended National Australia Bank by our agent. Would like to open an account before we leave.

Thank you

Hi Emma.

We do have a NAB in Kingston, also Bendigo Bank, Commonwealth, and ANZ .

all of them are within a few yards of each other and in Channel Court. We have found that the Bendigo is good and the Manager there is Bill Summers. oh sorry Westpac is there aswell thought there was another one!!

Agree: We've found Bendigo to be very helpful, although no good for a mortgage in our situation, so had to go to Colonial (via Wizard Home Loans, Sam is Extremely HELPFUL!) for that, but keeping Bendigo, too as they are small & the service is good... Particularly their on-line banking...

There dosent seem to be anything that matches the Nationwide over here. B&E which are Tasmania based are much the same . They only had their credit card a year or so ago. I think though that there is a tie in with Westpac somewhere along the line. I must admit banking over here is not the same as the UK. You pay for everything even if you are in credit. All are much of a muchness really.

Congrats Guys - Have a Wonderful Trip... One thing we plan on doing when my folks visit for the first time in Feb, is have afternoon tea in the revolving restaurant at Wrest Point Casino - the food & service are really good here, probably be expensive, but for a joint Birthday Celebration I'd imagine the evening views over the city & water would be very romantic...

Otherwise, if you are up North & fancy some simple DIY Picnic & Champers on the beach, then Bridport has a lovely white sandy arc of beach, with crystal clear aquamarine waters & little rock pools - just follow Bently St to the beach car park - might need to get there early, as it's pretty popular in the summer!

If on the East Coast, then you can't go far wrong at Beaumaris - again fantastic white sand, going on forever, you could well be the only people on your stretch - just be careful you don't forget where you joined the beach, as if the wind's blowing it'll cover your tracks like snow, which makes finding your car somewhat tricky!

Of course, there's the classic picnic on Mt Wellington if it's a lovely calm sunny day like today, the views are breathtaking, then if you don't want to do it yourself - how about a delicious lunch on top of Mt Nelson, again stunning views with a relaxed ambiance, you'd need to book as it's quite small!

HOWEVER, If you wanted something Really Quirky & truly memorable - to meet some real Characters, drive almost as far South as you can on the paved Rd to Ida Bay & take the little train ride into the bush - again has to be a real memory-maker, on the ride it stops at a beautiful cove otherwise unreachable, so I guess you could take your picnic fixings & enjoy a pleasant afternoon lazing on the sand & catch the later train back... On the way down the Huon Valley there are vineyards & orchards, & further down are caves as well as delightful little white sandy coves to explore, so has to be worth a night in a truly unique location... Always remember your hat, sunscreen & bottled water!!

Hope this helps... Check out my Photos by following the link on Herbster!

Oh Yes SCJ: PS: If you REALLY wanted to push the boat out in more ways than one - then take a dinner/lunch cruise with Peppermint Bay Cruises from Hobart down the beautiful D'Entrecasteux Channel to Woodbridge, opposite Apollo Bay, Bruny Island - has to be a wonderful trip, although you might not want to do it if it's wild & windy... Enjoy your stay....

Hi

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and have a prosperous New Year.

Been looking at hire cars for when we arrive and just wondering if you think 2 weeks gives us enough time to buy a car? Also would be great if you could give us names of any good car dealers. Will need at least 1 car maybe 2 depending on where we end up and where OH gets work. Hope to be able to pick up a 2nd hand car relativly cheaply!!!

Managed to book somewhere to stay in Kingston for when we arrive.

Thank you

Hello Emma,

You should be able to find a car in a day or 2. It is a buyer's market for cars here at the moment so you should be able to get a good deal. Do you know what type of car you want.

You will be in for a bit of a shock with car prices here, used cars are dearer than UK. Cars here do not rust and stay in much better condition for much, much longer.

I am in the car game here in Hobart and can point you in the right direction as to where to buy from, no I do not sell cars

Give me a call when you are looking 6234 9444

regards

Alan

Guest cabbagesahoy!

Landed in Hobart on Tuesday. My Aussie husband from Sydney got a job here and after 11 years in the UK together I said let's give it a try!

I SAY TO EVERYONE - COME TO TASMANIA. I have been all over Australia but this place is great - it's like the best parts of England 25 years ago with the best parts of Australia now. I must say I am very pleased and just want to thank all the PIO people here that have given me such great advice over the past months.

Only 2 downsides - my bathroom and kitchen are from the 1970's and you can't seem to get the equivalent of 'Flash multi-purpose wipes' anywhere but these seem somewhat insignificant compared to my amazing view and Bert the Bettong in my garden.

Can I make a restaurant suggestion? I had the best Chinese ever at Me Wah in Sandy Bay - Magnificent.
