Perth Is Not A Hipster Paradise In Case Someone Didn't Know

flag of convenience

Recommended Posts

Surprised no one among the Perth Paradise luvvies on this forum paid homage to the recent article, in New York Times claiming Perth to be some sort of urban utopia.

I can only imagine they even considered the author went to high in her praise. Anyway in today's Guardian, a Perth lad, a film maker, based in New York took a shot at the article, rightly claiming it was more akin to a piece from The West Australian Tourist Office, than an independent article. After all in an all expenses paid junket, the payer is wanting a return but really. Over the top or what? Perth more cooler than Williamsburg in New York?

As the Perth fellow said, which most with a level of awareness must surely concur with. His observations on a return to Perth to check out the hip scene was as follows.

"Despite some recent progress, Perth remains a frustratingly conservative, culturally starved unaffordable backwater city".

High five bro. More in todays Guardian.

What!!! you missed it flag. We were waiting for you to jump in and you didn't. You would have loved it mate, all us Perth lovers saying the writer from the New York Times had it spot on. Just 'cos one grumpy ex-Perth film maker didn't agree you side with him. Surprise, surprise.

Anybody going to Perth for a 'hip scene' needs a lesson in map reading. Truth be he was probably run out of Perth and lucky to be alive

You know what? It has all the ingredients to make it a 'paradise'- pity that the inhabitants don't get off their collective butts and do it!

Don't really know what you mean starlight. The ones that responded and posted to the original article were all agreeing with the person who wrote it from the New York Times. I guess we must be the ones that DO get off our butts.

I think it was a very one sided article written as a promotion in mind, however the positives it highlights are all true.. and.they even mentioned the community radio station in Mt Lawley but came short of mentioning its name as RTRFM 92.1 its the best FM specialist music non commercial around in the world. And its also broadcast online to the world. Is this station hip? Damn right is is right here in Perth.

PS listen in at 7pm (just over an hour) for anyone into everything post-rock....

I agree with a lot of your views on Perth FOC but I thought the article was spot on - made me shudder to be honest. To me that's what Perth is exactly like - a manufactured idea of a 'perfect city' and lacking heart and soul as a result.

I went to see the Lego Movie recently and as soon as Bricksburg came on I whispered to my friend 'it's Perth' - everything is Awesome!

God if I'd heard that word one more time...that and blessed! Cringe.

Why can't the Perth haters/destroyers/knockers just bugger off to some cave and live out the remainder of what little life they have, so much bitterness and bile from some here, no place is perfect but Perth is a million times better than a million other places out there.

Kept away today and some of yesterday, over the 'haters' and **** on wooden spoon brigade here, well bollox to them all if they hate it so much go away why don't you, some have never been here and say horrible things about the place, jealousy runs deep and bitterly twisted in some folk.

I and others can say things about other countries, why? because we lived there not had holidays there but lived there and witnessed the place destroying itself full of rubbish and disorder and don't forget some areas have become absolute shitholes in some parts of Britain for me.

Haha FOC commenting on the hipster scene

I think broken hips would be more like it....

Just going on previous posts...surely if some one has "lived" and "worked"in so many places then they ain't going to be a spring chicken even if they do think "they are down with the kids"

Im no spring chick either, I just enjoy Perth for what it is.

my daughters who are 18 & 20 can comment on if its hip...they think it is, they've just spend a summer going to concerts, festivals and the like. Different too, but as good as in its own way as the likes of Ibiza they tell me...

Because that would mean getting out of their comfort zone and finding some place else to target. It's the hating/destroying/knocking which gives their life some semblance of "satisfaction". How sad is that!

Some of us can get down with the kids but struggle to get up again lol. I have a 19 year old, loves it here, has a great time with her mates. Each to their own for liking or disliking but sometimes its a bit vitriolic against those that like it. I keep asking Kate for a private group so we can post about our love of Perth without people having digs at us

I absolutely agree with all of this except the private group. So many people wanting or thinking of coming here may visit this site. If they can't see the positives they may only see the ridiculous untruths that many come out with. Long gone are the days when it was just people who had a genuine and relevant bad experience on here. I'm naming no names but some peoples behaviour over recent weeks I think are bordering on creepy. And it isn't often I get creeped out.
