Flathead
As a nurse, one thing that's getting me more and more fed up, is that the NHS are supporting nurses less and less. The registration fee for NMC each year has now raised to £100, it used to be around £70 only a year ago. The NHS used to pay for employment police checks, they now make the employee pay for it. Nurses will have to pay for their own indemnity insurance (again used to be paid for by the employer), not to mention a pay freeze, technically meaning a pay cut each year when you take into account inflation. It's no wonder so many nurses are emigrating! So it is very Similar to here then

gpo1971
Wetherspoons have a similar menu/prices!Ok it might not be fine dining, but if we fancy a takeout, rather than going for a chippie/chinese or whatever,we use Wetherspoons, and you get a drink thrown in too!lol Wetherspoons is a toilet mate. I wouldn't drink there, let alone eat there.

gpo1971
Not sure where or what you were drinking but thats dear,i can go to loads of pubs in town and get a nice pint for about 2.50/3 quid,i can also go to some of the trendy ones down the dock and buy draught German beer for 7 or 8 quid, theres a new one near Mount Pleasant where i bought a few pints of the stuff for about a fiver, but normal pubs are cheaper than £4 normally, plus theres decent places to get a meal for less than 15 tbh Victoria St and Bold St. Don't get me wrong mate, not complaining, some great bars down there. Burger place was in Liverpool One. Was great.

Depends which one you go to?One of ours that is 5 miles away is about to be voted one of the best in the Sth West!I've been to a few that are pretty dire actually,so no point in generalising! They're ok for a stop gap between locals,or as I said,a good sub for a take out type meal. Lisa Anne Pope
It is certainly more expensive than it was when we returned in Dec 1999. My estimate for electricity for next 12 months is £1994 (a 2 bed room flat all electric) going on useage of previous 12 months. It cost us £50 per month when we first came back. Food prices have got more expensive - you don't get the very cheap deals on value brands that you used to (ie 8 p for a tin of beans etc). I would imagine though that the prices for electricity and food have also gone up in Australia. I find the cost of fuel for the car really expensive here and public transport also much more expensive (I live in a rural area). I do earn less money - I am earning the same money now as I did 14 years ago in Australia doing a job 2 grades lower than I currently am now. However, I got one of those infamous "Together" Northern Rock mortgages - ie no deposit and 125% enabling me to buy a house with an income of less than £12,000 per year at the time. The cost of the house was only £38,000 and is now worth £90,000 so I definitely benefited from that practice, although many lost out buying more than they could afford. Jacaranda
Wow thats a huge electricity bill you've estimated? We pay approx £700 per year for both gas and electricity combined!.We don't skimp either on usage.I don't waste it but I don't skimp either! We both work full time,so out of the house all week until 3pm. I would double check those numbers. We have a 3 bed house with an office in back garden which we have to heat so home 24/7 near enough. Total fuel bills will be nearer £1500. Is there still such thing as Economy7 heating. Would expect you to pay no more than £100pm for a 2 bed flat. Register with uSwitch and see if you can switch to a lower tariff. tayloal
Some great points on here, i'm not sure if the UK will become as expensive as Oz but then I suppose it does depend on where in Oz you plan on living just like in the UK. I've been researching my costs for living in Perth and based upon what I expected to earn everything seemed rosy, however, I can't find a job in Oz that is paying the wage for me at my level to have the equivalent lifestyle as I do in the UK. I've sought info from friends and family in Oz (2 lots of friends moved in the last year both to Perth then 1 left Perth for Qld). The family have been out there for 7 years and are doing well living in Qld with 2 incomes. One friend in Perth with his family seems quite coy about how they are getting on although I do think they are doing ok. The other friend left Perth for Queensland due to not being able to find work in Perth and finding it in Qld, I got a text from him this morning detailing how much money he went through whilst living in Perth for 5 months with no work, it was eye watering and really did worry me. Like everything though I have had to pick through the details, different people live different lifestyles and that's where one size does not fit all, the mate in Perth has probably rationalised the family outgoings and seem to be doing more 'free' family activities but they are having more quality family time. The mate who moved to Qld is a young engineer and was probably mixing in those circles and trying to 'network' socially a few times a week (with no income). All I know is that in the UK I can currently own my own home and drive a nice car and have over £700 a month disposable income. Based upon my research for an equivalent income in Australia (I'm estimating equivalent, any more will be a bonus) I would be left with $300-$400 left at the end of the month, I won't own my own home and the car would certainly spec'd down. My costs are based on Perth prices, Queensland I would be a little better off. It's opened my eyes to what I can and can't afford over there. Will it stop me emigrating..........................................................I really don't know. As for some of the other points: £15 for a burger and chips in Liverpool, I was in Liverpool One 2 weeks ago and paid £8.50 for the same. The Tory Government have just guaranteed that by the time the Nuclear power station, funded by the French and Chinese, comes on line, my domestic electricity charges will have doubled in the UK, regardless of how the electricity is generated. Competition in the UK energy market has been monopolised by the big 6 and no Government will do anything about it. Why? Because like so many other 'big profit industries' they are an integral part of our pensions and investments, so those that 'have' will always 'have', the 'have nots' will continue to pay for the 'have's' through ever increasing prices. I do pose a question though, why do a lot of us Brits judge the cost of living anywhere in the world by the price of a pint?
flybyknight
soon people may actually specify their building are built properly in the uk, just like in germany. when you are using less than 10% of the energy, for a more comfortable house, paying a bit more wont hurt so much, and that solar system will make a real difference! if we all keep buying what the main builders call a good house, we're just encouraging the bastards. google passive house. 20 year old technology, that works and is working, but next to no-one's heard of it because we all seem to like paying our electric and gas bills. oh, and australia's even worse, but dont get me started on that one lol

flybyknight
Maybe worse where you are but don't tar the rest with the same brush i work with about 20 carpenters and house fitters, they are now working in the aviation trade here in melbourne. i have mentioned to them about air tightness double glazing and draughtproofing. the overwhelming concensus is that i will have a hard time finding tradies who will work to those standards. i'm not blindly ranting, i'm doing my homework and this is what im finding. if you can suggest a better way i'm all ears. my words are observations, i'm saying it as i see it. if im bashing anyone, they deserve it! We haven't seen the parents and in-laws for about 10 years and we might not see them again at their age. We went in a decent pub in Melton one day rather than taking a ride into the country and the food and beer in there was a lot cheaper and good value. You can do the same thing here as well though pablo. Advert on TV last night that Hoggs breath are doing $10 lunches Monday to Friday, food halls are all over the place and they are good value too. Looked pretty good value on the advert. I don't think I've been to Hoggs Breath more than twice the whole time I've been in Aus. I would rather pay a bit more and enjoy a nice view of the Ocean.
