Really struggling with this bloody annotated bibliography. I am fine with the actual work it's just finding the 3 articles about what I want. I wanted to do Honey Dressings and the benefits and disadvantages but I need to find 3 different articles within the last 3 years, from the UK and each one has to be in a different place in the hireachy of evidence.... seriously stuck lol x

Morning Ladies.

So I am going over and over and already thinking about what I want to do at Uni because I will be applying by the end of the year. My passions are firstly midwifery however it's very competitive and I am not sure I could compete with the young whipper snappers fresh out of college haha ?

Or general nursing but aim towards paediatric or palliative care....

I don't want to burn any bridges and I do what to keep in focus that my goal long term is to train to do something I have always wanted to do and to get to move to Australia so what is the concensus with all the above? Does anybody know if they are all as equally in demand? Xx

Morning hun.

I picked Adult nursing because there are so many more opportunities with it here and in Australia. You can also always do the 18 month conversion course to Midwifery at a later date if you wanted too and you can't if you are a children's or mental health nurse. xx

Hi

Thanks for this. Ok well I think I am going to stick to GN and Adult.... I am already working on my personal statement and if I think back about the reason why I wanted to do palliative and my personnel experience with it. I don't think I will cut it with Midwifery personally and children may be a bit too close to home with children of my own may be blubbing all the time whilst they are ill.

I am just doubting the fact i got a D in Gcse math!! Damn it! However since done AAT level 2&3 which is a accountancy diploma which could score me points on the numeracy side. I checked and I actually got 5 c's and 3 d's and 1 e (oops was history though haha)

Do they do any relevant numeracy skills in the access course to make up for not getting a Gcse C ? X

Midwifery is so competitive and oversubscribed! Like CS says - you could always do it later on. Most of the uni's I've spoke to have said the access course is enough on the maths side of things. I don't have a maths qualification at all. There were one or two that said they wanted maths too but I can't remember which uni's.

I know in Scotland there are now only 3 universities doing midwifery - but I thought the rest of the UK was more in demand for midwives....or is more a case of there will be a shortage in the not-too-far-away future?

General Adult nursing is a good base, and gives you exposure to so many different areas, it's unreal, so many choices if you decide to specialise!

Hi

Have called Keele and they will accept access equivalent to maths gcse if I do 6 parts within it maths based at level 2 and told me just to make sure they know u need to do this and they will so that's covered so I have the 5 gcse to pass and it mentioned 260 ucas points....is the access course once completing giving me this amount of credit? Or do I need additional qualifications to make up this??

Thanks going to stick to adult nursing and that means I can still specialise in one field. In the process of applying for nhs volunteer role and also going to talk to care home manager Sunday to look at volunteering there as well. I have a part time role at the moment (3 days a week) but they are not being flexible to me doing a Thursday instead of a Wednesday which is the day I needed to volunteer at the care home so looking into a care home assistant part time which they may allow me to do nvq so if I start by March hopefully could get that completed before the end of the year also x

The UCAS points shouldn't matter when you've got your access course as that should give you what they need in equivalent.

If you don't do an access course I think if you need UCAS points it's a certain number of points per A Level so like 170 for an AA and 150 for a BB etc xx

Sorry I'm still asleep but do you mean you will be doing Nvq and a access course? Just watch that because the whole point of the access course is that your not supposed to of studied for a few years. They might not allow that. I was going to do a access course at Bristol and they wouldn't allow me to do any type of course, not even a maths one. It was weird! All the access courses usually say the entry requirements are being out of studying for at least two years. If that's not what your saying then ignore the whole message lol x

Yes that's what I was saying lol and ahh I see good shout there ok so no nvq will stick with the access course route because it's quicker really anyway and it will give me the maths equivalent that I need for the degree too.

I heard in the news that they have admitted that there are not enough midwifes so I was thinking they may increase the intake in the foreseeable years. But didn't realise it would be as competitive for spaces for midwifery and nursing....slightly anxious now haha! x

Double check but I think that's probably the best route, your access is the main way in so prob no point putting extra stress on yourself. Ahh don't worry, things like volunteering always help plus uni's seem to love mature students x

I was told by Uni the average age of nursing students is 29 lol. In our cohort it's been the young ones who have left and I know they are more reluctant to take them on xx

My friend said quite a few people in her year left too. I really hope that doesn't happen to me. I've decided I'm def picking OT over nursing, if I decide I want to do nursing i can always do it in the future x

According to Keele uni they require 5 gcse A-C including English and maths which I have now covered and 260 ucas points....?? So this as long as I get the merits i need will cover this? X

They sometimes have different entry requirements for access courses so like mine says 30 credits (out of 60) at Merit or Distinction. So just check xx
